Gerry Rafferty was a tortured genius. This song was about himself. He loved his music but he absolutely hated the music industry. It cost him his marriage and caused him to drink himself to death. Such a loss!
Wow I know Alot of rock trivia, but never heard that,I always wondered why he wasn't a bigger artist, the dude wrote some seriously intense lyrics if you understand them,by the way not everyone will, relate to that life,y'all are the lucky ones.
This song is so hauntingly beautiful. I agree with you Mel, you can get lost in the music and not pay close attention to the lyrics. But when you do, you understand this is a song filled with sadness and longing. You are very insightful. This song really takes me back in time. Thank you for playing it today, great pic! Have a lovely afternoon ahead :)
This song is one of the best.Gerry Rafferty hit us with a few greats."Right Down the Line",is one you guys would like .The sax in "Baker Street "is killer, this song is an easy listen.Great to put on while on a drive. It is such a vibe.
Love this song. Especially the sax solo. In 1972 Gerry Rafferty was in the Scottish folk rock band Stealers Wheel & had a big hit with "Stuck In The Middle With You". Later on, he went out on his own & then had the big hits "Baker's Street" & "Right Down The Line".
This was a HUGE HUGE hit when I was about 16. It’s so melancholy and evocative, just a few notes and I’m instantly back to a teenager. Another one with that same magic is “Year of the Cat” by Al Stewart.
I love seeing beautiful young people’s faces reaction to the music I love and grew up with.. just goes to show we all have a soul, young and old are that can be touched by this magnificent music
Jerry left us on 1/4/11 from alcoholism and depression. A MAGICAL Singer/Songwriter. The sax was played by Raphael Ravenscroft who left us in 2014. Gerry is my FAV 70s/80s artist. He belongs in the Hall of Fame. SO many GREAT songs. Night Owl, The Royal Mile, Whatever's Written In Your Heart, Right Down The Line, Don't Speak Of My Heart, The Right Moment, Home And Dry, Get It Right Next Time, The Light Of Love(the most beautiful of his songs). He is also the writer/singer on the MONSTER hit in the mid 70s Stuck In The Middle With You by his band Stealers Wheel. He left us a legacy of GREAT and BEAUTIFUL music. Thank you, Gerry-RIP.
Pronounced Jerry. He was from Scotland. It’s about wanting to get out of his contract with Steeler’s Wheel (former band) after they broke up and his record company making it difficult. The saxophone player was recording in the next studio and Jerry asked him to be on his song. It was a last minute decision. Jerry was going to play guitar until he heard the saxophone by Raphael Ravenscroft
Whether it be Gerry And The Pacemakers or this Jerry or others, oyr American friends always have trouble with that name, most often saying, Garry. I have noticed that many times on other videos before:)
Just one more of a thousand reasons why the 70s was such an amazing decade for music. so much variety and genres, but so many great artists and groups.
EASILY one of the best songs ever recorded! 💯 As a musician and a songwriter, I can tell you with all my skills and art... This song is FUCKING ridiculously AMAZING! Its the kinda thing we all want to be capable of! 💯 And we never can match... for real!
This song just draws you in. Gerry Rafferty from Scotland has done a lot of meaningful music. Always cranked the volume up for that Sax, when played on the radio. So glad it speaks meaningful to both of you.. Cheers.
When this song came out years ago it actually changed my life. I'd listen to those words and I realized he was talking about me Thanks for sharing it guys
Baker Street is a very famous street in London England. Where Inspector Sherlock Holmes made his residence [221 Baker Street]. And Madam Tussaud's world famous Wax Museum is displayed. This great song came out in 1978 and made Scottish singer/songwriter Gerry Rafferty a big star. Brilliant!
Gerry (Jerry) was a bit of a torchured soul, to make it big in music he had to travel to London away from his home and he knew it was killing him. A standout song by a standout artist.
Lovely man. Neighbour of mine for many years here on the west coast of Scotland. Always had time for a chat and was inspired by the beautiful views of Ailsa Craig and the Isle of Arran. A perfect place to write such great songs.
For some reason my country of Birth Scotland seems to be able to produce singer/song writers who can pull every bit of emotion out of you with their words. Along with Gerry Rafferty we have Lonnie Donegan, Donovan, Al Stewart, Annie Lennox, Edwin Collins, Paolo Nutini, Emily Sandé, Amy Macdonald and Gerry Cinnamon as solo stars and bands like Del Amitri, Simple Mind's, Big Country, The Proclaimers and Deacon Blue ofcourse there are loads more but for being able to take you on the journey of song with them. In my mind all the above will make your jaws drop, it must be our crap weather that makes us deep.
@@retrowatches1655 if you want to be funny get it right Tiger Feet was by the English band Mud and Les McKeown (yeah you can't spell) was in the Bay City Rollers. Sadly Les died recently, he was a lovely guy who I knew well. I also knew Alan Longmuir from the Rollers as his ex partner is a relation of mine.
Quite a roll call of Geordies, too. Sting, the Knopfler brothers, Bryan Ferry, Brian Johnson, Hank Marvin of The Shadows, Dave Stewart, The Animals, Andy Taulor of Duran Duran, Neil Tennant, Lindisfarne. Check out the Beta Band, Steve Mason, Lau, Karine Polwart, Julie Fowlis, King Creosote and Frightened Rabbit for more great Scittish acts.
Great reaction! "Baker Street" is a great song. My favorite Gerry Rafferty song is "Right Down the Line". I think you both would really like it too. I look forward to seeing more of your reaction videos. Take care!
Love your channel. as a child of the 60s I can still sing all these songs word for word 50 years later. What a blessing. Some songs I haven't heard since then, but I know em all.
I remember cruising yonge street in Toronto Ontario, with my friends in my 1968 Dodge Charger.. great nights and wonderful memories.. thanks for sharing..
This song woke me up every day as a kid because they played the same on radio, my dad's alarm clock ( before internet ) and my neighbour across the road that watched me grow up played the sax and would play Baker Street out his window . It was so load it went up the street. One more interesting fact is l went to Latrobe University with my mum and my Nana Joyce to see two theatre movies this song was in the movie . I was so young but remember a man in the movie paddling down a river. I want this song to be playing at my funeral. ❤❤
Such a genuine reaction guys! One of my most adored songs. I loved your feelings on the first verse. I'd love to hear you guys react to another one of his songs titled Right Down The Line. You've earnt a new subscriber ❤
My Dad used to work in Baker street in London, I used to meet him for lunch sometimes. I always think of hm when I hear this. It is aso the place the fictional character Sherlock Holmes lived - n the books. BTW "Right down the line " By Gerry Rafferty is the most wonderful song. Major, major love song.
Y'all are on fire 🔥 tonight guys. This is another of my all-time favourite songs. I know it word for word. It's just a piece of music. When the Sax comes in !!!!! OH MY!!!! It really is a sad song. But gee, do I love it. ❤ 🎶🎤🎼🇬🇧
This song is really great. When I focus on the lyrics it is very deep and introspective however, if I only listen to the music, I then feel like I am on a summer vacation lounging by the pool or on the beach, no other song affects me in this way. Excellent reaction.
love the way you two peel back the curtain to see a song for what it offers the listeners...great song! Great artist! great reaction video!! the 70s is my favorite decade of music because it really had so much variety, soul, meaning, and creativity....
This song touches my soul. Every time I hear it I think of my soul mate...the love of my life. He could never seem to get his life together. 😔 He had such potential but he was a tortured soul and unable to give me what I wanted. Later in life he told me I was always the one and was ready for a relationship but it was too late. I got married to a wonderful man but he still haunts me. I will always love ❤ him.
One of my all time favorite songs. It was very popular around the time I graduated from high school. Heard it everywhere all the time. Every time I hear it I can imagine myself back then with my whole life stretched out before me trying to figure out what to do next. Kind of scary thinking how much has passed since then! That line "just one more year and then you'll be happy" always gets to me. That's the way life is - you're always looking towards the future hoping it'll be better.
I used to drive along Baker Street every day when I worked in London and often thought of this song. Also went past 221b Baker Street which was where Sherlock Holmes lived in the Conan Doyle books!!
Love this song, reminds me of a Florida trip with a best friend after we graduated, this song was very popular! The harsh realities of our dreams that we will all experience, been there!
One of my favorite songs ever. This is life. We all have been trought this sometimes in our lives. But still have the dream of better things to come. This is so real. There is no denying that the 70s produced some of the greatest music of all time. Just sayin'

He died at 64... poor him! RIP Gerry. You were bloody brill! 😍🎙🎶
Night Owl had the same vibe, He was happiest composing and recording ,not comfortable on stage ,he left us wth some great songs ,sadly missed.
He did indeed buy some land and gave up the booze if I'm not mistaken - and became a crofter
@@bonkousmcnaughty4604 Not sure, but I heard he did not actually "give up the booze" sadly...

Walk up Baker st nearly every day this song is always in the back of my mind
I love the line “the city has so many people but it’s got no soul”…..
Same words can be echoed today unfortunately!
Taxi Driver (1976) matches with this vibe. Steely Dan's pessimism as well. Those emo vibes are ahead of its time
London is sadly no different today at all
The fear and loneliness of a city. Especially fear.
I love that song. Everything about it. Thank you.

He struggled with alcohol and eventually died of liver failure. His City to City Album is an absolute masterpiece.

Such a great song. Hear it once and you’ll never forget the tune.
For such a small island the UK has produced some of the greatest musicians that ever lived and a lot of them too.
This has got to be one of the best singles ever released. It was playing on every jukebox in every pub or wine bar in my town when it was released.
This song speaks to the soul through the lyrics and the music. It definitely has a profound effect for the listener.
Another iconic song that has stood the tests of time. It sounds as good today as it did in 1979.
This brings back memories from when I lived in London in the 70's I moved there from a small town in the North East of England ❤❤❤
