    Hi Bob, This is fantastic! I like the Hispanic " Orchids in the Moonlight " best. The rest of the music was good too. The 1934 Chevrolet with the Fisher body is the one I like. My favorite cars are the earlier types though, like Ford Model T's and those cars with spoke wheel tires...lol! This is wonderful Bob, you helped to make a bygone era come alive for me! Thank you so much my friend. :-)

    That Victoria (Ford made them as well, but I think that is a Chevy) is my favorite body style of that era with that little bustle back, a cross between a coupe and two-door sedan. Our mailman had one when I was a kid and I noticed it even then! The music even sounds deco!

    Bob, I know I say this all the time, but -- gotta say it again -- this is one of my favorite sets you've put together ... just magnificent! I don't recall having heard "Moonlight on the Highway" with lyrics -- only a live instrumental version by the BG orch; this is nice! I really like the vocalist on the Hudson-DeLange "At Your Beck and Call"; she seems to have a little Maxine Sullivan influence; love that pretty tune. Good to hear the two different "Why Shouldn't I?" songs; the Porter one, which the Dorsey band does, is of course the more famous of the two; not sure who wrote the other one, but I've heard it in a Joan Crawford film of the period -- good song, sweet version. Beautiful take on "Orchids in the Moonlight." Nice to hear the less-commonly heard take of "By Heck"; for me, 1934 was the last great year for the Dorsey Bros. orch -- they still had some jazz content then; in '35, the band became much more sedate. I love this treatment of the great "Did You Mean It?" -- such a good tune! Hadn't heard this excellent version of the gorgeous "The Morning After" -- I have the Norvo with Mildred Bailey and TD with Jack Leonard; underrated tune. The Lopez closer is terrific, too!

    • @pax41
      @pax41  6 лет назад

      Doesn't the Reggie Childs selection remind you of Hal Kemp?

    • @Trombonology
      @Trombonology 6 лет назад

      For sure! -- those muted trumpets prior to the last instrumental chorus sound very Kemp-ish.

    • @pax41
      @pax41  6 лет назад +1

      Yep, that is the same thing I thought too. I don't recall anyone employing that technique until Kemp started doing it. The Dorsey Brothers "By Heck" puts me in mind of another outfit but haven't put my finger on it yet. I like that Trini song, it was new to me as well and a recent addition. I actually thought I was buying the Porter version when I purchased it.

      I DO like music from the Swing era, but you're right in suggesting that I prefer the earlier styles. I find them more varied and less 'formulated'. Also most bands tended to have their 'own' particular sound One immediately recognises a Weems number or an Ambrose song from his HMV period e.g.

    • @pax41
      @pax41  6 лет назад

      I agree Peter and that is what I like about the early to mid 1930's period. I would have thought the Lennie Hayton piece might be something you liked. I am fond of it, great vocal and arrangement, plus a beautiful song.

  • @Ethergirl

    Another great collection of songs. It's interesting to me that these are from the mid to late 30s. While they aren't quite as boisterous in tone as songs from the late 20s, they do seem at least a bit more energetic than songs from the early 30s which seem very sedate and ballad oriented, and frequently wistful sounding about the past. Maybe people were starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel from the Depression by '35 to '38.

    My dad talked about a '31 Buick Roadster with dual-mount spares he had during WWII. He couldn't get tires for it and let it go for cheap. He liked looking at antique car traders looking for one like it. I needed a car 50 years ago and found a '35 Dodge Coupe that was roadworthy. Dad talked me out of buying it because it had knee-action shock absorbers, and he said those were not good. I guess that one is my regret!

      David have you talked with Bobby Roy? He restores old cars and he is up in Arkansas. I am going to make a road trip up to see him and his cars and record collection. Do you have a picture of the Dodge? Side note. I am going to start commenting on your videos to help you out. I did some research today and you may have seen my Facebook post on it. "Rainbow in the Night" sounds very similar to "Until Today." Perry Como recorded "Until Today" while singing with the Ted Weems Orchestra. "Until Today" also pops up in a short subject featuring the Freddie Rich Orchestra; Bunny Berigan sings the song in the movie and has a nice trumpet solo after his vocal.
