  • Concerned about managing hemophilia bleeding? Dr. Banda Ravi Teja, Consultant Medical Oncologist at Continental Hospitals, shares insights on effectively stopping hemophilia bleeding through replacement therapy.
How do you stop hemophilia bleeding?
Hemophilia bleeding is stopped by replacing the deficient clotting factors. In hemophilia, certain clotting factors are either absent or present in reduced levels. These factors are replenished to normal levels through injections or infusions. For instance, in hemophilia A, Factor VIII is deficient, so we administer Factor VIII to restore normal levels and stop the bleeding.

    What are clotting factors?
Clotting factors are proteins in the blood that help control bleeding. They work together in a cascade to form a blood clot and stop bleeding. In hemophilia, specific clotting factors are either missing or reduced, which impairs the body's ability to form clots.
How is Factor VIII administered in hemophilia A?
Factor VIII is administered through injections or infusions. The dosage and frequency depend on the severity of the hemophilia and the specific needs of the patient. By restoring the levels of Factor VIII, normal clotting can be achieved, and bleeding episodes can be controlled.
Are there different treatments for hemophilia B?
Yes, hemophilia B is treated with Factor IX replacement therapy. Similar to hemophilia A, the deficient Factor IX is replaced through injections or infusions to achieve normal clotting levels and stop bleeding.
How often do patients with hemophilia need replacement therapy?
The frequency of replacement therapy depends on the severity of the hemophilia and the individual patient's needs. Severe hemophilia patients may require regular prophylactic (preventive) infusions several times a week, while others may need treatment only during bleeding episodes or before surgery.
What should patients do if they experience a bleeding episode?
If a patient with hemophilia experiences a bleeding episode, they should immediately administer the prescribed clotting factor replacement and contact their healthcare provider for further guidance. It's essential to act quickly to prevent complications and ensure effective management of the bleeding.
