People forget the importance of “A Nightmare on Elm St.” This movie and it’s sequels were such huge hits that the studio that made the movies literally became a powerhouse film company. This is the same company that made the Lord of the Rings films fifteen years later. New Line Cinema is known as “The house that Freddy built.”

@@senyum0 YES! I would not be the man I am today in the job that I love if not for Johnny Depp. I was a recent, directionless, nineteen year old high school graduate. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life until I saw the movie, “Benny & Joon.” Depp’s performance in the park scene cemented it. I wanted to do what he did in the movie. So I became a clown. Honestly I think I was destined to be one, but Depp’s performance was the nudge I needed to set me off. Over my twenty-five years of clowning I’ve made thousands of people happy, met some wonderful people including my soon-to-be wife, and I owe it to Johnny Depp. Who happens to have a fear of clowns.

Johnny Depp had no plans to be an actor whatsoever before this movie; he was an aspiring rock musician. He went to the auditions with his friend for support and Wes Craven (the director) noticed him and asked if he wanted to give it a shot. The rest is history.

    • @BPhillips2000

Fun fact. This film is based on a true story. Back in the 1970s there were a series of articles in LA that intrigued a young Wes Craven. A series of Hmong immigrants were found dead in their beds having died in their sleep. They were all young teenagers. They stayed up for days on end saying that if they fell asleep they were going to die. When they fell asleep they did die. This core concept inspired this film. This is also the first major film New Line Cinema made. New Line is nicknamed The House that Freddy Built.

@@StudlyFudd13 Honestly the movie isn't as bad as people think it is. The gross stuff is gross, but it's far from the only horror movie with gross content in it. (This movie had freddy cut open his chest to reveal green slime-blood and pouring out maggots, for example.) But the villain and his motivations are legitimately creepy, and make it a pretty decent horror movie. Everyone I've ever talked to about the movie will rebut with "You are a gross person for liking the movie." It has a weiiiird stigma about it, it's not all that out of line for your average horror movie. If you like horror movies, it's worth a watch, it's not any more fucked up than all the others.
The second one is pure trash, capitalizing on the reputation of the first one, and trying to be as gross-out as possible, which believe it or not is NOT what the first movie was doing. That being said, I don't think it was stellar or amazing, so it's not like you gotta watch it if it doesn't appeal to you. But it's been blown way out of proportion how gross the movie is.

As far as horror movies to watch outside of October, I highly recommend The Myst. It’s a lot like The Thing in that the majority of the movie is about the tension between people as they are trapped in a horrific situation.
I must warn you though. The Myst is not for the faint of heart. The reason it’s not a Halloween movie isn’t because it’s less scary so much as because it’s so gut-wrenching and nihilistic it might sour the mood of the Holiday.
I have a month long horror movie marathon every year in October, but I once made the mistake of putting the Myst early in the lineup after having forgotten much of the movie over time.
I was so depressed afterwards that I cancelled the whole marathon and watched an anime rom-com instead, lol.
I’m sure pitching a movie as being emotionally upsetting is unappealing, but hey, horror is supposed to be uncomfortable right? It excels in many other ways, as well, anyway.
It’s rough, but it’s absolutely worth a watch.
