2022-03-25: I was saddened to hear that Taylor Hawkins died today while on tour in Columbia. He had his own demons, much like Dennis Wilson, and I really feel sorry for his family who lost their husband and father. I loved the version of this song on the 30th Anniversary set, but this re-recording with Brian May soloing along is even better.
Yeah, I immediately thought of how Hawkins helped bring Wilson's song to life. I remember on the doc he said "I'd hate to piss on somebody else's Picasso," in reference to trying to give the music respect. Crazy how life is.
Too many 'Queen' comments on this video. Yes, Brian & Roger have made this an epic track, but the praise needs to be heaped on Dennis Wilson, the unsung genius of the Wilson Brothers, who tragically died at the age of 39, ironically drowned when he was such a strong swimmer.
This whole thing about Brian May and Roger Taylor being there in the mix doesn't make it a Queen song. It's Dennis Wilson's Song, who was a legend in his own right. PS - Don't get me wrong, I love Freddie but give apt respect to Dennis too (One of the vital members of The Beach Boys) Love from India x)
Agree.. it doesn't make it a Queen song, but it has that Queen sound one recognizes instantly.. it does fit well in this song together with Wilsons original take and the harmonies Hawkins, May and Taylor put in..
Today Queen is identified as just Brian and Roger at minimum. When they go on tour as "Adam Lambert + Queen" its just they represent Queen. John Deacon is still a silent partner only as far as business dealings are concerned.
Before anyone comments R.I.P Freddie Mercury. I want you all to bring your attention to a man whose genius abilities were overshadowed by his brother Brian Wilson. Dennis Wilson was the drummer of the Beach Boys, who like his brothers were geniuses. It's true Brian, Roger and Taylor made this song awesome, however, Dennis came up with the melody. This melody is, if not, one of the most addictive melodies you will ever hear. Without this melody, the song would be nothing. I highly recommend everyone to watch the Dennis Wilson documentary and listen to Pacific Ocean Blues to get an insight into both the man and the music he produced.
I had no idea that this was even a thing. I'd only heard Taylor's version. This is absolutely beautiful. Dennis would've been so happy with what they did with this one, I know it.
Brilliant collaboration and song. Dennis snd Taylor, thank you for sharing your God-given talent with the rest of the world. Brian and Roger, keep playing, sharing, and rocking.
Ok the guitar solo by Brian May gives it a Queen feel (nothing wrong in that) but for those of us who know Dennis' work with the Beach Boys will also know the melody and piano are pure Dennis. Taylor has a voice very similar to Dennis and does the song justice. Check out "Forever" and "Only with you" to get a measure of the man who we lost way too early.
It’s crazy how he’s gone now, and he had this obsession with Dennis. I grew up on Beach Boys(I’m 39) learned guitar and drums to the foo fighters, as well as The Beach Boys instrumental album Stack O’ Tracks. I feel for Dave Grohl, that’s 2 friends that he lost to drugs. He knew they were troubled but couldn’t help them no matter how he may have tried. Grohl may retire or come back even stronger. Either way I respect his decision. The album that he blew my mind on for the first time was “There is Nothing left to Lose” - RIP Taylor.
Dennis what could have been on a solo career. Your ideas and lyrics where so beautiful. You are missed!! The 3 Wilson brothers have so much talent and soul no one will ever compete. The one family that’s music can make anyone have fun or cry in the same album!
Great tribute to Dennis Wilson. Brian May, what did you do here? By far one of the best solos ever written/composed in music history. Not to forget: what a song, composed by Dennis Wilson. Discovered it years too late.
My name is Laercio ... I'm from São Paulo - Brazil ... I've listened to all of Queen's song since my nine 9th birthday ... I have 49 today ... There's nothing like your work! You express a sacred work through the soul .... I love You !!!!! Queen Forever !!!!!!
It's ironic how the Freddie Mercury cult clashes with the Dennis Wilson cult here. Both have an almost religious following. As others have pointed out, Freddie had absolutely nothing to do with this. This is a Dennis Wilson recording from 1977 (1975 according to Wikipedia), with much more recent overdubs by Taylor Hawkins (2008) and Brian May/Roger Taylor (2019). I have made a long chronological playlist of all songs Dennis composed, recorded and/or sang lead on, starting with Little Miss America in 1962 and ending with this. It's worth a listen. Find it here: ruclips.net/p/PLQQn6DLadHF8gT33pT-g9rQYkNDGm_IG2 From the very start, Dennis didn't just contribute surfing and drums to the Beach Boys, but also incredibly soulful vocals, which gradually developed into a universe of its own, until its tragic ending in 1983. One of my many favorites is the live version of Help Me, Rhonda from 1972 (my year of birth) which I have included. I made this list several years ago, and was reminded of it yesterday while walking home under the golden rays of the setting sun. I spent about 5 hours listening, correcting and annotating it. I hope you enjoy it!
Found this through Patriot. So thankful that I continue to find more of Taylor's work. Blessed I saw him here in N.O.with the Foos not long before his death and Queen twice as well. Rock gods.
Dude really .....Forgive me for responding but this is Dennis Wilson through and through..you kids have not got a clue man unless you spin some of that stuff from the old days you will never get a clue.. bless you any how...Dennis and Carl are watching over us..If you have love and music and harmony in your heart they are watching
I dig it. It seems all 3 of them might have been inspired by lead single, river song, on pacific ocean blue... They wanted to crank up the harmonies and energy to match.
This is actually rediciously good. Giving me weird 90s solo Brian May nostalgia . Dennis' original instrumental & the pure version with Taylor Hawkins added vocals have a lot more emotional/spiritual power. They've made it into a lot more of an (almost) solo May / Queen+ song and a lot less of a Dennis Wilson song but it works as its own thing. "The one you love is everywhere..." - it's probably meant to be more about God/ a cosmic spiritual power at the centre of the universe but you could connect that to Freddie or anyone you love who's died.
This is what Dennis could do. IMHO He was suppressed during the American Graffiti days. Oh, what could have been! See “My Friend” or “I’ve Gotta Friend” live with lyrics to understand WHY I’m saying this…
Wondering if rabid Queen fans cry about Freddie on the video of Brian May singing Save The Badger Badger Badger Badger? 😁 I'm full on autisticially obsessed with Dennis Wilson but don't go making posts crying about how sad he's dead on videos of Kokomo.
@@mads9270 I'm offended that you don't understand why. We all think of Freddie listening to things like this, watching his old concerts cause we realise some of us will NEVER see him in concert in our lives and some of us never will again, we think about how young he was when he died, we think about the fact Brian, Roger and John lost their best friend that day, that their world probably felt empty for a while after hearing he passed, we think about how much of a legend he was, we think about how much fun he was to watch in concert or through a TV screen, we think about everything.....
Roger Taylor Is the real QUEEN C’mon, live in the present. How about actually enjoying their music, instead of wanting to be transported 40 years into the past? We all want to, but it isn’t gonna happen. Enjoy the brilliant stuff they’ve released over the years, go see Queen and Adam live (even though I suspect that you are too possessive about Freddie).
Dennis greeted Taylor in Heaven, shook his hand, gave him a hug and said “great job - thank you”
