Big Ray Quest: Episode 6 - A Late Feeding Spell

- Another early alarm clock to fish low water at Perch Rock on the continuing quest for the elusive double figure Thornback Ray. Another wet morning which started with the usual dogfish but the rays were late in the tide coming on the feed but ended with a few in fairly quick succession. Still no double figure but it will come one day!!!

The double figure ray quest continues. Another great video mate, tight lines for the next one
Many thanks Les. It does continue. Now 20 rays into the quest but still no double although really enjoying the journey having good fun along the way. 😁🎣
Nicely done 👍🏻
Many thanks Mark. Hope you keeping well and full recovered after your giant skate battle....wow what a fish!!! 🎣
Another fantastic video Rich cracking session your doing well on the rays. You will get that big one soon!! How you finding the fire blades? Be just order one 👌🏻👌🏻
Thanks for the comment Jamie, appreciated. Fireblades are lovely rods...Century did a great job with them. Light slim blank, plenty of back bone but easy to load up and compress on the cast. Handle a decent sized bait and lead well. Tip sits nicely in the tide and shows bites up well. A pleasure to use. Still trying to get the classic ray bite on video where the tip wraps over and just keeps going. Going to make an effort to try and capture it on the next session.
Perch Rock Fishing thanks for the info rich. I’m looking forward to giving a good blast. I’ve got T800 an that’s a beast in it’s self so do doubt the fire blade will be as well cheers mate and look forward to the next session tight lines and good luck mate
I have a pair of C-Curves which are amazing rods. It's fun taking out the Fireblades though and enjoy using them...Century did a great job at the price.
Nice vid lad.
With cod season starting, dye still think its worth putting a fish bait out at the likes of mariner's wharf for a ray? Haven't seen one come out the last couple sessions down there.
Cheers
J
Thanks for the comment J. The rays will still be there but you need to get the bait out a bit further than in the summer. The main problem is getting past the whiting which will quickly home in on the fish baits before the rays get chance. You will pick rays up over the next couple months but will take some perseverance and also result in quite a few whiting but rewarding when it happens.
@@PerchRockFishing Think I'll put out squid/lug/crab claw cocktails on ledgers/droppers at range. Suppose that'll get the cod and the rays, two birds with one stone
Are the rays ther through the winter or head to deeper water r the conger ther as well Ritchie
Thanks Jimmy
Thanks for watching Jimmy. The rays generally go quiet in Dec, Jan and Feb. Still there but generally right in the deep boat channel. The Conger should have arrived now as whiting numbers pick up but they are difficult to target as you have alot of fish (whiting, dogfish and rays) that want to eat the same baits.
Hi rich just wondering any idea wer I could get a decent fillet knife from ps got the fireblade 👍
Hi Jimmy... congratulations on your new rod..you will have a lot of fun with that. Just looking at a new filleting knife for myself but need to look into it a bit more. I tend to use a good pair of scissors a lot for bait prep but you do need a knife for some things.
Do you think the perch will be ok to fish low this weekend or struggle to get in deep water with the small tides
Ta jimmy
Hi Jimmy...smaller tides at Perch will require longer cast and likely to be more active with dogfish (at the moment) and crabs. I prefer the bigger tides but the larger the tide often the shorter the ray feeding window around low. You should catch if you fish at the weekend but I would expect it to mainly be dogs and whiting.
👍
How did you get on yesterday bud. I was talking to you and ya mate.
Hi Dylan...nice to meet you..only one Conger run but fish came off half way in...only felt like a small one and think it was just holding on to the big bait. We had a few whiting close in which we used for bait.
Nice to meet you too bud. My mate had a conger about 3ft. We were getting whiting every cast. Went threw 11 packs of lug but was a lot of fun.
Hi rich just wondering what type of headlamp you got n wer you got it
Thanks jimmy
I have been using a Nitecore NU32 which I really like - lightweight, waterproof, rechargeable and has both white and red light. Nice to use the red light as it doesn't impact on you night vision or doesn't blind people when you go and chat with them. I have also just picked up a Ridge Monkey 150 which looks really good which provides green light which seems even better than red. Haven't used it yet but will hopefully try this weekend. Some think you need a lighthouse strapped to your head but as long as your headtorch gets you safely to and from the mark, lights up your rod tips, allows you to bait up and move around the fishing spot safely then that is all that's needed and doesn't actually require huge amounts of light.
Spot on mate sorted with 1 now so can’t wait to get out again now 15/20 years still got an issue with a conger of seaforth rocks 😂😂😂
Had a Conger off Seaforth rocks years ago...there are a few over there.
is there any lockdown restrictions at perch rock?
Not at the moment...but it is in a high risk area.
This is local lockdown measures www.wirral.gov.uk/health-and-social-care/coronavirus-updates/local-restrictions-wirral
