I wasn't looking for people just making the mugs. I wanted someone to explain the process while doing it, with all the nuances and little details, tips etc. And I got EXACTLY what I was looking for. Not to make 'em myself, but to just know the process. Great video!
I've just taken my first pottery class and seeing the whole process, with your narration, has been so helpful. Thanks for your generosity in sharing your knowledge.
Haha, yeah, I've thrown on wheels that sound like helicopters and all kinds over the years. Nowadays they've got to be quiet for the filming but really, that buzz does get to you after 5--6 hours. Thanks for watching as always!
As a college student, i can say your videos are definitely going to be watched by some pottery making class, and you'll be that college professors favorite channel to reference. I can already see it
whole life before playing tennis I watched some videos of pros, just to mentally instill the right strokes, movements...then when you go to play it’s already in there 🧠 Now, before I’m going to handle, I watch you pull handles. It’s such a lovely gentle prep 🙏👍❤️
I really enjoyed your style of tutorial. As someone with AuDHD I have a hard time with people who pause and reiterate constantly. I just want to watch, start to finish. I can’t learn if you keep stopping!! So thank you!
This is so beautifully specific. The detailed tips like using the glaze lid to prevent spillage and using your fingertips to desharpen the edges after shaping make me emotional with their elegance. Not a potter at all but I'm planning to make a mug for my partner's birthday at a local pottery class and this will help immensely with making it a gift that's at least likeable if not actually practical.
Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing your talent and experience. The video was very well put together and covered the process very well. Great Video!!
Your videos are so incredible. I've watched through your beginners series twice now. I recently took a few private pottery classes at a local studio but at the final stage (glazing), they somehow lost my pieces. I was devastated! Watching your videos has made me feel excited to try again. I love how thorough you are and how much time you put into making these educational videos. Thank you!!!
I love that you showed the whole process. People that don't do ceramics have no idea how many little steps go into each piece, and it's very satisfying to see each step in one video. I love your work, I'm hoping to snag a piece in your next release!
Florian, your videos have amazing quality. So plesant to watch. All the information you include makes it much more easy to understand what are you doing for someone who knows verry little about the subject.
I just took my first lesson, and enjoyed pottery more than I thought I would. I love your mugs how the handle looks like it is literally pulled out of the mug, beautiful. Great video, I couldn't stop watching.
I watched twice. It's such a calm cool video and great. I to just started class and I'm having so much fun making my wonky little projects. 😂 good luck on your adventure! 😊
Your videos are really enjoyable to watch. Relaxing, informative, interesting, and easy to consume. Thank you for all of the extra effort you put into your pottery to share your process with us.
Thank you so much for this, I've been trying to make a mug for my mother, and I was having a hard time using the wheel, but after mimicking what you did, I have made a great mug for my mother. I can't thank you enough!
Just came back here to say that in college I got covid during my first ceramics/pottery class. So it was extremely difficult for me to catch up after getting better. After that I had a lot of anxiety during class because I was so behind. So every Friday I’d come in to the ceramics building and put in extra hours after watching your videos I was finally able to pass after so much frustration and anxiety. Thank you so much for your videos!!!
So so wonderful! You have a great calming voice that makes this so easy to watch. I loved seeing the full process and learning about all the small details and instructions that make this process safe and efficient. Thanks so much for taking the time to share this!
I absolutely loved this video! It's funny how you make it all seem so simple, and yet we know how complicated it truly is! We know also the great skill it requires to have all of your throwing skills, glazing knowledge, finishing techniques, proper loading, all come together in a successful firing, producing your unique and beautiful work. Your glazes are stunning, and the forms have such clean and simple lines.Very inspiring! Thank you for taking the time to make this video; it was a positive joy!
I miss ceramics soo much! My mother has several shelves of large pots, bowls and cups. I made some Raman bowls with built in chopstick holders that I still use 20+ years later!
It has kind of become a ritual of mine to watch one of your videos before going to bed... Hehehe it's SO soothing to watch 🤩🤩 you are a master and your work is absolutely stunning 🙏🏼😊😊😊
Hi Florian. Thank you for your brilliant videos, very instructive, educational, well detailed . They show your brilliant skills, your passion and workmanship. I have learnt a lot. Very grateful for your time. You create very beautiful pieces.
Thank you! I always lean towards simple forms, cylinders, straightforward curves, and so on. I'm still surprised I find them a joy to make, even after throwing several thousand over the past ten years.
I’ve been a big fan of yours for some Time. Just recently found your RUclips and wow, I can see why you pottery is so beautiful and precise. Keep up the amazing work and I love watching these!
Stunning and very interesting to to take us through the entire process. It's the hard work and dedication that goes into making these beautiful mugs! Thank you for sharing!
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. I'm hoping to create a pottery studio with my wife in the future. You really help me gain enough confidence to go for it!
I've been wanting to make some like some mugs and bowls and I didn't know how to until I watch this video now I'm realizing that it's going to take a lot of money
Thanks very much Alexandra! I appreciate the kind words and thanks for taking your time to watch. Hearing that you're learning from them makes all the time spent putting them together so very worth it.
So beautiful. I love these videos. Would love to see what you do with the pots that you don't deem worthy/get smashed. Like how you tell which ones aren't perfect and what you do with them afterwards
Quite enjoyed watching the whole video. Something oddly satisfying and relaxing. Just had a curiosity spark as my partner broke her favorite mug today and it was a limited edition piece, so sadly won't be able to replace. Perhaps one day I'll give it a go :D Keep up the good work!
Thank you for the detailed instructions. How did you decide on the glazes you use? Did you make them all from scratch? Or are they commercial formulas that you tried and then developed?
Thanks for watching! And tell me about it. I do wear goggles when the kiln begins to reach top temperature, although admittedly I do occasionally take a sneak peek within it them before that.
Loved your video:) I have been lucky to land a kiln and a pottery wheel as a Christmas gift. Now I need to learn. I need to watch all of your videos. I don’t know which clay is best for someone like me. I’m also going to start making mugs and add letters and/ simple drawing and color them. Could you direct me towards that? Thank you Bless

Hey! I find your videos truly informative and well narrated. I'm a ceramist that just got her first pottery wheel! I'm wondering: which kind of wax are you using? I always struggle in taking off the glaze from the bottom of my pieces
great video , so much detail and work involved... the explanations and guidance throughout is fantastic , Ive gained a new found respect for the art..:-)
Florian, I am obsessed with your videos. So relaxing. So informative. Is there a reason that you pull your handles instead of using an extruder? I have been using a mold for my handles, and it is clearly holding back the quality of my mugs. In the midst of deciding between using an extruder or pulling.
Thank you for watching John! Well, it's more just personal preference more than anything. The same job could of course be done with an extruder but that is essentially what my hand is doing, which I suppose is advantageous as there's no extruder to clean afterwards and it's completely customisable just by changing the shape of your hand, as opposed to having to change the die plates in the extruder each time you want a different shaped handle. If that makes sense. Of course pulling takes longer to learn but once the skills are there it's very versatile, very fast and requires no clean up.

Gorgeous video production and process. I’ve been trying to get 300grams of black mountain to 11cm x 8.5cm - it’s soooo thin and can only get up to about 8x8. I wonder if it’s a limitation of the clay I’m using or just skill getting it that thin.
Thank you for another wonderful video! If you have time to answer, why do you soak at top temp? The reason I ask, I run a small clay studio and we have had trouble with bloating lately (since beginning to use darker bodied clays). I’ve read that it has everything to do with oxygen availability during bisque firing. So now I loosely pack the kiln and leave all the peep holes open but it seems so inefficient. I could give you more details but I just wonder if this soak is for that purpose or some other. Curious to know either way.
I would love to see just a tips video on producing identical forms. Its something I've been working in for a bit now but I am still very new to pottery. I want to start learning how to make identical forms, and you obviously have a lot of experience with it. What were the mistakes you made along the way and how did you learn to correct them?
That's a good idea! I can certainly make a video like that. Fundamentally it comes down to being very strict with yourself, the weights of clay used and constant measuring, moreover it's simply practice, thousands and thousands of hours worth of it 😬 but let me see what I can do, I'll add it to my video idea list, so thanks for that!
Hi Florian I’m such a fan of yours and got into pottery just a couple months ago. I made a couple of these mug pieces and made a drying shelf with plastic on all 4 sides with one side being lifted a bit and the other sides almost closed a lot. I use the regular plastic bag before when they were wet until they got leather hard. At leather hard they were a tiny bit flexible but still strong enough to withstand my pressure with my finger. However, after eight more hours of drying on the new drying set up, The pot was literally not flexing at all when I pushed in the rim, but when I run my nail through it, it made a visible mark in the Clay still felt a little bit like leather. The handle since it was more wet, felt the same, even though it’s literally only been eight hours since I pulled them. Can you please help tell me if the mugs are drying OK this quick or if I should rehydrate them and stick with the plastic bag from now on since they dry too quick
I watch your videos and tell myself I can do that and then....disaster. hahaha I have a question...does it take so long because of the quantity you make? I love your videos. They're relaxing and educational!
I oddly find the narrated version more relaxing to listen to than the ASMR version. Lovely job on the narration.
Same!!! I think it his voice!!!!
Same! 😊

That's wonderful to hear. I hope you liked your first class, it's an addictive process. Thanks for watching and good luck potting!
you’re making me want to buy a new, quiet wheel. so satisfying to watch a nice, solid wheel head that doesn’t buzz all day!

Here are Michigan state our professors link these videos on our class website!
You're certainly right, as a first year ceramics 1 freshman in college 😂 I've spent probably 4 + hours today watching this channel
My professor recommended this channel!
As a pandimensional shapeshifter, true

I love watching people do what they love. So much wisdom shared in such a short video💚 thanks partner🙏
You are so kind , so detailed and so profesional ! Thank you so much for your ongoing contribution to us, less experienced pottery lovers 🧿

Hi Florian. Thank you for your brilliant videos, very instructive, educational, well detailed . They show your brilliant skills, your passion and workmanship.
I have learnt a lot. Very grateful for your time. You create very beautiful pieces.
Love the mug forns, have been trying more regular cylinders lately and they're surprisingly satisfying figures. Not as boring as I thought they'd be
Thank you! I always lean towards simple forms, cylinders, straightforward curves, and so on. I'm still surprised I find them a joy to make, even after throwing several thousand over the past ten years.

Thank you for the video. Good to hear the kiln firing backgrounds. Using eye protection when looking into a hot kiln should be good for you.
Thanks for watching! And tell me about it. I do wear goggles when the kiln begins to reach top temperature, although admittedly I do occasionally take a sneak peek within it them before that.
Dude!!! what an awesome video! one of the best I have seen on ceramics. thanks...
Perfect demonstration and valuable explanation. The best video ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
With the freedom of hand-crafting from clay, it's fascinating how different people think a mug should look.
The mirror tip has been so helpful!
A wonderful potter and a great teacher, thank you so much F!
Such a great video Florian. Thank you so much for all your effort of making and sharing it. Cheers Mx

pottery is one thing that ive always loved to watch but have never tried myself.
I took a pottery class and my dad wanted me to make a mug for him. It’s probably gonna turn out bad but i just need to practice!
I’m so happy you follow your passion
This was amazing. I had no idea this much was involved.
This is insanely satisfying to watch and learn.. thank you for sharing this with us!
liked and subscribed. I watched it beginning to end totally fixated on what I was watching. Great content.
I love your videos man thank you for making and sharing them with us. Beautiful work. That reduction is amazing
Thanks for taking the time to watch Michael!

I’ve heard that pulled handles are stronger, as the clay particles are more aligned.
26 minutes feel like 10 when watching your videos
Thank you! I'm so glad you liked it.
thank you so much for your lovely work and beautifully explained tutorial. such a kind heart.
Thank you so much for your generous sharing of what you have learned. Truly appreciated. Blessings 🙏🏽
Thank you so much for this video. The part I constantly stumble over is the trimming of the base with the blunted tool. I make a mess, and never seem to have the right tool. Do you have any tips? Are there any videos where you show this in more detail and what kind of tool you are using? Thanks again
Thank you so much. I am very new in training and feel this was a very good presentation.
Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for making this video. Best education every!!!
First time watching your videos, and yes I'm in love with your work! they look warm and gives me a chill vibe at the same time. I'm subscribing for sure, looking forward to your next videos.
Is it advised to not trim the inside of the mugs and instead make them as close to perfect on the inside as possible during throwing?
Hello from Oregon! with our current conditions (40ish centigrade from noon until early evening, 30% humidity) mugs that size would be bone dry in 1-2 hours. Thanks so much, hardworking yes, but well worth it I think. I just hope some people find the videos useful.
Thank you for sharing your work and knowledge with us!
Beautiful work, wonderful video, thank you
The mirror is a cool idea. Also, I love the mugs, I only have 1 nice mug, a Denby Pottery one.
