Jackson Dinky JS22-7 Mega Mod - EMG Gotoh Hipshot Schaller Upgrades on $199 7-String Guitar

  • In this video you may see modification completed on a Jackson JS22-7 guitar. Cost of this seven string guitar, new, is only $199.99...extraordinary value right from box. Factory humbucking pickups are adequate, but EMG active pickup is nice upgrade. JS22-7 is routed for pickup without cover, so cavities must be enlarged to accommodate larger EMG. Replacement of factory 3 position switch with EMG switch also requires small amount of chisel work. Large electronics cavity of JS22-7 accommodates 9-volt battery, nye problema. (I may route for installation of battery box in future, or install battery box into cavity cover. Until then, cover must be removed to change battery.) Pickup rings are EMG, sanded with micromesh to remove gloss finish. Factory bridge was replaced with high quality Hipshot bridge...relocated a small amount to rear on bass side to allow more adjustment of intonation for larger strings. Jackson tuners were replaced with Gotoh locking tuners for much improvement of tuning stability and very fast string change. Strap buttons are replaced with Schaller S-Locks in Satin Pearl finish. Volume and tone knobs are replaced with larger (25mm diameter) TAISS aluminum knobs. Fretboard (and touch up areas) is stained using india ink. Complete hardware list below. I am only simulated musician on RUclips without skills to play this instrument, but I believe this upgrade is very good choice for real heavy metal guitar player.
    Please comment with question or helpful tips for other viewers and I. Please click “like” if you think video is helpful or believe music to be very bad. Please subscribe to see more guitar projects in the future...two new build/modification videos are in editing process, and this week I will begin shooting video of Schaller Lockmeister tremolo and Schaller locking tuner upgrade to a B.C. Rich Warlock guitar. Very exciting!

      Very nice! I was torn between Nazgul/Sentient combo, and EMG. I wanted to try something a little different, so went with EMG 85-7XH / 60-7XH combo out of curiosity. I'm happy with it, but I still need to take some time to route for battery box. Right now, battery is still stuffed in electronics cavity. That may be good idea for next video, since this guitar seems very popular. Thanks for checking out video and for comment, Matt Wengler!

    Great tutorial and setup guide. Just got one of these (in gloss finish) and it has the emg style enclosed pickups already in there and for ones that are passive, they have very little impedance and feedback for stock pups. Just want to pain them and get new knobs installed. Was considering EMG sets, but I think I'll stick with these guys as they already sound great out of the box

    Is your bridge at a slight angle? It looks like it is towards the end when you're showing it complete. I had a hipshot bridge installed on the exact same guitar and I noticed it was also slightly angled. Is it supposed to be that way?

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  3 года назад +2

      I angled mine slightly back on bass side to allow for more intonation adjustment with the larger strings. I chiseled small channel on the rear of the string-thru holes of body, so that strings would still make it through holes in bridge base. It gives some wiggle room...especially when using something like 64 gauge string. Thanks for watching and comment, mike robinson! 🤘

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +1

      Hello, Erick. Absolutely, the Gotoh tuners were a perfect fit! Hipshot is usually my first stop when searching for new hardware, and the Grip-Locks are really nice (I've installed Grip-Locks on two of my guitars). But I'm not sure if you can get them with the 45-degree angle mounting tabs, as you can with the Gotoh and Schaller M6 135. The Gotoh also handles a 64 gauge string with no problem. (I think Hipshot Grip-Locks will only handle up to .06", but Hipshot will enlarge the low post to .09" by special order/no charge. They did this for a baritone guitar I built with non-locking tuners..works great.) The Gotoh are very high quality, made in Japan. eBay seller "guitarhey" is one of my favorite suppliers (huge range of tuner "sets" and options and great prices/fast shipping), and below is a link to the exact set I bought for 3 left/4 right, 20mm post length, black, with keystone buttons. If they look dirty in my video, it's because I coat all of my guitar hardware with Birchwood Casey Gun Stock Wax, and fill screw holes with beeswax before assembly, haha. Thanks a lot for checking out the video; I really appreciate the nice comment. One day I'll actually learn how to play guitar! :D

    Great mod! I could never get myself to try a mod like this. I'm thinking of buying this exact model and swaping out with some Duncans, or EMGs. Do you think that would be worth doing?

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  3 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching! I'd check prices on guitar that is already fitted with pickups/hardware you like...it MAY be cheaper than installing your own. I just enjoy doing this work...obviously more than actually taking time to learn to play guitar properly. 😂 Duncans should be super easy swap...they should fit no problem. Cavities on my JS22-7 were not routed large enough to fit pickup with covers (EMG), that is only reason I had to chisel corners out. But I think Duncan's should drop right in. (I also like to remind, there is nothing wrong with factory Jackson pickups...entire guitar is awesome right from box! More output can easily be achieved from booster pedal, for example.) Some professional guitar builder may cringe at this thought, but if you don't have soldering iron/not comfortable doing soldering work, try swapping pickups using 3M ScotchLok IDC butt connectors! I used them to swap pickups on guitars, especially when I wanted to install temporarily/try out the pickups, and not re-solder/replace pots, etc. They work perfectly. I used to work in telecommunications, and had a bunch of these connectors (and a Scotchlok tool which is not necessary), so I thought it was worth a try. No problems at all...and takes seconds to connect new pickups. I haven't done some scientific test on flow of electrons through solderless butt connector, but I cannot imagine they are a weakest link. I think a set of Seymour Black Winters, or Nazgul/Sentient would be awesome in this guitar! Of course, like most guitars, my first mod would be locking tuners...but this is my personal preference. Then I would probably do pickups. Swapping bridge is nice mod, but doesn't bring huge real-world improvement in my opinion (looks cool and maybe adds some mass), and swap MAY become involved/custom work. Good luck, and thanks for comment! Looks like you have some awesome videos on your channel...I'm going to check them out tonight!! 🤘🤘🤘

      @@SnifferCustoms wow thanks for your detailed response! I didnt mind your playing at all creative stuff! and yeah I didn't think about the locking tuners, I don't usually worry about that but it probably does make a difference cause some of my guitars have a hard time staying in tune. Im mauinly focused on pickups because I want something that's brighter and more responsive. Most of my guitars have stock pick ups and they often sound kind of dull or lack brightness/sharpness in the distortion, and when I go to guitar stores and play something with some hot EMGS or Seymores etc they sound so clean and smimmery. I Play metal so im always looking for a high gain sound that doesnt sound like its dampened in any way. btw do you know if there's something to fix scratches in the black matte finish?

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +1

      Duncan Distortions...nice choice!! Hey, I think the JS22-7 is perfect for this kind of experiments...have fun with it, and don't worry about scratches/messing something up...you'll just be giving YOUR guitar more character! It is perfect blank slate! If you want to experiment with different pickups, without soldering, try using 3M Scotchlok IDC butt connectors (yellow). You may get 100 pack of these on Amazon for $16. Just cut old pickup wires...leaving plenty of length to reattach them if necessary, and crimp on the new pickup wires...you don't even have to strip wire ends. "Real" guitar tech may cringe at this idea, but I did this on a couple of guitars to try different pickups, and it works perfectly. Swap pickups in 5 minutes. As for scratching the finish, embrace your handiwork, haha. If I get bored with the flat black, I wouldn't hesitate to hit mine with rattle can. I was thinking of spraying it with flat green camo spraypaint. :D Good luck!

    Is the hipshot bridge ok as far as the floor height is concerned? Or would you go with the 0.125?
    Also would the hipshot open gear tuners 3x4 require modification? I can't find the gotoh you used, they're out of stock everywhere...

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +2

      Thanks for watching and comment...and congrats on new guitar...very exciting! Personally, I preferred the 0.175 base Hipshot bridge on this guitar...I originally purchased the 0.125 and thought it was too low. Hipshot tuners are my favorite, but the anti-rotation tab is not going to match. The Jackson tuners have the 45 degree tab, like Schaller M6 135. Hipshot have tabs like Grover/Les Paul. Not that Hipshot Grip-Lock tuners wouldn't be worth the time to drill new holes/fill the old ones, but the Gotoh tuners are equally very nice. Plus, Gotoh fits large sting without problem. Hipshot may require you ask them to drill out one of the tuner pegs to accommodate larger strings. They will do this for free....if you order from their website...but ordering direct from Hipshot usually cost more than ordering from re-seller. I've been getting Gotoh tuners from eseller "guitarhey"...they are great seller with stores on Reverb and eBay. They have LOTS of sets of all variations in stock, and their listings show diagram of headstock, so that you know you are purchasing correct set. They also ship VERY fast, and have great price. This is the set I put on my JS22-7: www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Gotoh-SG381-04-MGT-Locking-Tuners-7-String-Keystone-L3-R4-Set-3x4-BLACK/293018272788?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

      @@SnifferCustoms Ok, thanks a lot for your time and info, I might get the gotoh then!
      One last thing, have you had any issues with the intonation on that guitar? On mine everything above the 12th fret is flat on every string except the two lowest...

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +1

      Yeah, intonation seems to be a little tricky with the longer scale, I guess. Due to the large strings I have on JS22-7, I installed the Hipshot bridge at an angle to allow for more adjustment to the rear for the low string...since they tend to go sharp. I put the bridge back as far as I could go while still being able to use the factory string holes in the body (as you may see in the video, I had to file the top of the string holes in the body out a little so that the strings would more easily make it through the holes in the baseplate of the bridge). Anything more than that, and I don't worry about it too much...I just try to get intonation as best as I can. Considering I don't really know how to play guitar and "play" with tons of effect pedals and horrible amounts of distortion...it's probably impossible to tell if guitar is even in tune at all. 👹

      I see it similarly and if the modifications made were necessary in the way documented here is a matter of your own discretion, but based on the end result heard, in my opinion it was good enough for it in series condition.
      As far as the tuning machines are concerned, I can partially understand why they were installed there, but the rest of the festival was dispensable here.

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +2

      Sorry, I just saw your comment! Congrats on new guitar! I had to re-drill holes on mine, for the Hipshot bridge...but that's the case for most bridge swaps unless it is some standard type like Fender guitar or something like this. It's no big deal, if you can get your hands on a drill. Most important before drilling, is making sure your intonation will still be correct (string break-over on saddles will be in same position), string-thru holes match to the body (or at least close), and bridge is on centerline of guitar. One of most used tools in my shop (aka kitchen) is Swanson 3 foot metal ruler...they cost $3.48 each at Lowe's, and having two is more convenient than having one when doing things like installing bridges/routing cavities. You can use this to measure intonation length of current setup, make notes, then install new bridge so that saddles will be adjustable in that range. If you need to plug some holes and re-drill, you could use matchsticks and wood glue, as most guitarist have probably done with strap lug screws at some point in life, haha). Gotoh SG381-04 MGT Locking Tuners fit no drilling...5 minute swap. You just need a 10mm socket or box wrench (be gentle not to strip/scratch...not too tight) for bushing nut, and small screwdriver. My favorite seller for these tuners is "guitarhey" on eBay. Their listings show headstock diagram, to make sure you are getting correct set, and they ship FAST and have great price. Gotoh SG381 should have the same anti-rotation screw tab location as your guitar...the 45 degree angle Schaller style. 20mm "long shaft" was perfect fit for mine...keeps top of peg low profile. I think this is link to the same ones I used (of course you can get them with different colors and button shapes/materials): www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Gotoh-SG381-04-MGT-Locking-Tuners-7-String-Keystone-L3-R4-Set-3x4-BLACK-/293018272788 Good luck! Tuner upgrade, in my humble opinion, is BEST upgrade....way better tuning stability and super easy string change. New bridge is cool, but real benefits are probably more aesthetic...and maybe more comfortable under hand. Thanks for comment!! 😈

      For sure, I believe the -07 just designates them as coming with the Schaller Mini style button, but otherwise SG381 is what should match the Schaller style tuners on your Jackson. Button style on Gotoh page here g-gotoh.com/product/sg381/?lang=en If you go for a Hipshot bridge, I also suggest getting the one with the thicker .175 baseplate. It is personal preference, but I think the longer scale has the saddle up higher from the guitar top, so thicker base helps. (I first bought the .125 baseplate model, and sold it because it was too low for me.) My favorite seller for Hipshot stuff is SportHiTech, with stores on eBay and Reverb...way cheaper than buying direct, and also very fast shipping. I believe this is the particular one I used on this Jackson... reverb.com/item/41829-hipshot-41075b-black-fixed-7-string-bridge-0-175-floor

    I bought a distortion 7 bridge and some 10-64 strings at the same time as the 22-7. Sounds brutal af, but my biggest complaint is the painted stock bridge doesn't seem to ground very well. Might try to modify it some before replacing it completely, but how do you feel about your new one vs the stock one?
    Also, my 22s factory bridge pup was actually decent, but the neck pup is straight garbage. Maybe a factory wiring issue or was yours the same muddy blah sounding neck pup I got in mine?

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +1

      Thank you for watching! Nice, Distortion 7 seems like a perfect match for this guitar. You may try removing stock bridge and taking some sandpaper to paint on bottom/make sure ground wire is making contact. I think my stock neck pickup sounded fine, compared to bridge pickup. If you can get your hands on a cheap multimeter, you might check voltage on it...I wonder if a short in this pickup may be cause of some ground issue as well? Honestly, swapping bridge out with Hipshot is not going to bring a lot to party, other than I think it feels more comfortable under hand and looks very nice. It is heavy brass bridge, so it surely doesn't hurt sustain. Very nice upgrade if you have some cash to spend and enjoy doing such things. I'd probably go for neck pickup upgrade first/hunt down any grounding issues first. Good luck!

    Hi there!
    I have a question about those Jackson stock tuners you replaced: how good/or bad were those tuners? Are they a decent quality...by that I mean that you don't have to tune the damn thing every few minutes?
    Thanks, man!

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад

      No problems at all with stock tuners...they are exactly same as what you may find on most import guitars. I think they are identical to a few sets I have purchased from Amazon/AliExpress for less than 15 USD per set...only difference they were stamped with Jackson. I think they all come from same factory in China, haha. It is only my personal preference to use locking tuners...for me they improve tuning stability a LOT over any non-locking tuners (although many will debate/suggest locking string wrap technique) and make changing strings extremely simple...especially when the stings are not "locked" to the posts using knots. And, GOTOH tuners just work great...VERY nice quality, and have mounting hole pattern to match Jackson. Plus, I just enjoy working on guitar...even more than attempting to actually play them. Everything on this guitar was excellent right out of the box...I wouldn't suggest anything on it "needs" to be changed to anyone thinking of purchasing it. Tuners work as well as any non-locker. Bridge works perfectly. Pickups had plenty of power for metal. But if one WANTED to upgrade anything...I'd start with the tuners...as I would on most guitars. Easy swap, and makes guitar feel/perform like best guitar. Swapping bridge may be a lot more work...especially if you want to move it back to increase intonation range, as I did. Changing pickups is easy, IF you use pickups without covers. This Jackson is not routed to fit pickups with covers...I had to open up the cavities to fit the EMGs. A WAY easier (and perhaps much better) choice would probably be some passive Seymour Duncan Black Winter pickups...they would make this guitar a monster. Use 3M Scotchlok butt connectors, and it would be a 5 minute swap, haha. Good luck and thank you for comment/watching video!!

    Might be a dumb question but how did you take off the volume and tone knobs? Im looking at getting some gold hardward for mine.

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад

      If there is no set-screw on side of knob, they are just push-on type...very easy to replace. Just be careful pulling them off...don't apply too much force, or you may break pot/crack finish. Sometimes a thin guitar pick on each side will help leverage knobs loose...or you may purchase a cheap plastic knob puller if you plan on pulling your knob often. 😜😜😜 more complicated is purchasing correct size new knobs. Push-on knobs are generally for same size shaft, but if you replace pots, things may get more tricky. There a few different sizes, plus solid shaft, fine knurl, coarse, etc. Then, finding a listing that has correct shaft size is even more difficult, but sites like Stew Mac have great info on pot/knob sizes, and best quality/price. Good luck, and thank you for comment!

      @@SnifferCustoms I have the same guitar used in the video. So if it is a pull off then will knobs that use the side screw require some other work? And also what size are they?

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +1

      I didn't take a moment to look at pots I pulled out of this Dinky, but I (someone may please correct me) would assume stock pots will have Alpha style 6mm shaft with "coarse" 18 spline knurl. Most inexpensive "push on" knobs you see on Amazon, for example, are like this. If you have some new gold knobs with set screw/no knurls, it should be no problem. Knobs with knurls (not smooth hole) could be "fine" 24 spline knurl for CTS pots. There are also 6.35mm (1/4") shaft CTS pots with no knurling, which rely on set screw to hold them on. 6.35mm knobs will fit securely to your Dinky pot if they have a set screw, but will knob will be wonky/not really aligned...because hole is too big. Now, knob with set screw probably does not have knurls...so spline count is not important. So, if you have set screw knob with 6mm shaft hole...not the larger 6.35mm (1/4") hole, you are golden...like your knob. 😉 Then it's just a matter of put knob, tighten set screw. Also note, your want set screw to go into the "split" of the shaft, so that it wants to expand the shaft as you tighten set screw. Otherwise, it will "crush" shaft post, and your knob will fall off. Nobody wants knob to fall off. 😁Also, don't ever-tighten...these threads may strip very easily...then you need new knob. Also, leave some space between knob and guitar body, so it doesn't scratch and turns freely...and try to make it level when tightening set screw. Sometimes I use a business card cut in half as a spacer. It'll be fine.
      I make that sound WAY more complicated than it is...but something this simple is frustrating when not correct. Someone else may put it more concise. Like: "Just buy knob and put on knob, but don't buy knob for 1/4" (6.35mm) shaft...that will be too big." ✔
      By the way, good choice on gold...nobody seems to like gold hardware these days...I think it looks awesome! Make it your own!! 😈

It's thin like water...I probably only use less than half a bottle for 2-3 coats on a fretboard...including the additional ink on fingers, clothes, cat, etc. It's handy stuff for little touchups where you don't necessarily need/want to paint, but don't want to see bare wood.

      Thanks for comment, Alex, I hope to make these videos entertaining! Are you liking this new guitar, considering the price? I think it is great right out of box...no mods necessary. I also bought because I had never felt a need for 7 strings, but curiosity finally got me...and I thought this would be a fun guitar to do mods on...whether it needed it or not. (I am better at working on guitar than I am at actually playing some guitar...no attention span for learning to play properly, haha.) I was honestly surprised how good it was. I got my first guitars and basses in 1980's...and back then there was not guitars and pedals of this quality affordable to teenager like me spending most of their money on some beer and girls! Congratulations on getting new guitar...I find that exciting! 😈

      Sorry for delayed reply, Demode! Guitar was setup so well right out of box, I haven't bothered with nut. Even with large strings I installed, they settled into existing plastic nut just fine. From reviews on Amazon website, it looks like GraphTech PT-6748-00 might be a good candidate for this guitar...with perhaps little or no final shaping required. I may purchase one and see if this is true, just for sake of putting something helpful on RUclips. If it really is a "drop-in" replacement, I'm sure lots of people would like to know, as carving new but from a blank can be pretty tedious work...at least for me. Great comment for helpful discussion, Demode, thanks!! 🤘🤘🤘

    Glued in strap holders. Why?

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад

      Haha, it does seem odd to do this. Some times I will have stripped strap button holes in some older guitars with cheap/soft wood. In these cases, I have to plug/re-drill hole (or just a toothpick and some glue). I feel like putting some glue in hole will help prevent this in the future. 😉 Thanks for watching and for comment, woochyna! 😈

    • @woochyna
      @woochyna 4 года назад

      @@SnifferCustoms Straplocks do usually come with smaller screws or threads compared to originals so I would use toothpicks or matches, but I never felt the need to add glue as bare wood would usually suffice, so this is kinda overkill to me. Nonetheless, nice mods. I'll change the pickups on mine and won't be dealing with the hardware as it would already cost more than the guitar itself. Cheers :D

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад +6

      I do it for no other reason than I enjoy working on guitars. 😉 That's why I try to stress in comments that this a great guitar, right out of box. Some person may only have budget of $200 for a guitar, and I don't want them to think if they buy this, they will need to drop a lot of some money to make it good. This guitar doesn't "need" anything. When some person asks me how I would make their guitar better, I suggest two things over others: 1. Get professional setup (or learn to do themselves). 2. If they want to spend some money, forget pickups, spend money on good locking tuners. I will say this whether it is $100 guitar or $2000 guitar. I personally think this is best upgrades with measurable improvement. Of course, best investment would be to get lesson and learn to play properly, haha...guitar matters much less, haha! Thanks for watching and comment...it's a good point that first time guitar buyer should understand! $200 will get awesome guitar these days. But if this person thinks at some point they will want best components, just save money a little longer, and $700 these days will purchase REALLY awesome guitar loaded with best components...no being tempted to upgrade parts!

    Question Boss, since idk how to wire/solder/sand shit down/upgrade guitar hardware (basically everything you did in the video) lol. Just off top, could ya ballpark an estimate how much you think it’d cost to throw some EMG’s in my Jack (Same model) professionally?Just a guesstimate 🤔 so I have an idea.. can’t stand talking w/ the f'n pricks at the local Guitar Center! Haha. Great work btw bro 👍🏼👍🏼

    • @SnifferCustoms
      @SnifferCustoms  3 года назад

      Honestly speaking, I probably wouldn't invest in professional installation of EMG into this model of guitar...for cost of this you may nearly purchase guitar already equipped with active pickups. At least on my JS22-7, as seen in video, body is simply not routed for soapbar pickup. So, corners must be cut from pickup cavities. This may be done professionally, or simply hacked out with chisel...which is no big deal...it's a really cheap guitar...no need to be pretty. That being said, EMG DOES make so 7-string pickups without covers...marketed for more of a vintage tone (Fat 55's and Hot 70's), which may fit without modification....but I'd measure carefully first. Plus, they may not be sound you are looking for. Next problem is fitting solderless EMG switch. I had to do a lot of hacking, again, to fit EMG solderless switch into this guitar. It has components mounted to switch that require space in cavity, as seen in video. Again, probably not big deal, but somewhat tedious and not pretty. Finally, there is issue of battery compartment. Many are fine with keeping battery in electronics cavity, but I hate doing this on my guitars, but it works....at least until I take time to install battery holder. My best advice to someone who honestly does not like the factory pickups in JS22-7, and wants to turn it into a super beast with no fuss...and get back to playing guitar...is this. Get a set of passive Seymour Duncans, drop them in, and attach them to factory wiring harness with 3M ScotchLok butt connectors. Done. I know some luthier will cringe at this, but I've done it a few times, with intent of "temporary" installation of pickups. But, I've never had any issue doing this. You just cut wires to factory pickups, leaving a few inches to work with, drop in new pickupsm attach wires with scotchloks. That's it. No soldering. (But you will have a bunch of ugly butt connectors in the cavity, haha.) You can get a 100-pack of 3M IDC butt connectors for like 13 dollars. You don't need special crimp tool, just some pliers, but crimp tool is cheap and makes crimping much easier. Good luck with guitar, and thank you for comment! 🤘🤘🤘

      @SnifferCustoms  4 года назад

      EMG pickups, EMG toggle switch, EMG mounting rings, Gotoh tuners, Hipshot bridge, Schaller S-Locks, aluminum knobs, some black ink...I think everything total around $500. I think if I were doing in steps to ease the cost, I'd start with Gotoh locking tuners....very nice upgrade. Then I'd swap pickups...using some passive hot Seymour Duncan pickups would be awesome upgrade, with extra cost of active EMG components. (I'll be installing Stew Mac battery box on this guitar soon...that will be extra cost. Battery is now stuffed into electronics cavity which I don't like.) Swapping bridge to Hipshot is awesome upgrade, but I feel this is mostly aesthetic. But, that's important, too, haha. Your gloss black one sounds nice! When I bought mine, not too long ago, I think they only came in flat black. I think they also changed to a cheaper style of bridge, versus earlier models.
