  • We sat down with three of the five Democrats in Congress who won elections in Trump districts: Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (WA-3), Mary Peltola (AK), and Jared Golden (ME-2).
They told us what the Democratic party can learn from their victories: “I think we're not winning because we don't respect working people.”

Does Golden not realize that kids from higher income and affluent families don't have to take out student loans? The lower income students and families are the ones who need the student debt relief the most. They've been lied to about how a college degree will get them a higher paying job.

    • @undeadishbill
      @undeadishbill 4 месяца назад +10

Just considering the way Golden approached the question, maybethere was some doubt that relieving the people with the lowest debt was more likely going to reward more affluent loan holders, and not lower income students who probably have higher levels of college loan debt than 20k or less. I'm not agreeing with him, just considering that may be the perspective.

The right degree and an appropriate level of that type of degree will bring a higher income, often with benefits. For instance, a philosophy degree will likely not accomplish that, but a psychology degree at a master or doctorate level likely will. Similarly, a bachelor degree in nursing would provide a good income, though a masters would raise it.

What Media gets wrong about The Narrative™. The Left has to understand the middle. Liberals need to understand Trump voters. Notice how the folks to the right don't have to reciprocate. No one to the right of you is expected to reach out and listen to you. Liberals don't need to respect progressives. Trump voters don't need to respect liberals. The further right on the political spectrum you are, the more the media expects everyone else to cater to you. Why is that..?
    .
Full disclosure; I *suck* at meeting people where they are. I'm glad other people can do that. Maybe if we didn't spend 3/4 of a trillion dollars being the world police, then we could afford nice things. I hand out my opinion about where we should be going. Folks can meet me when they are ready to catch up. I have to ask, just how much respect do people need? Personally, I'm not that special, a neutral amount will do. It is so easy to control an individual, especially if they need to be catered to, courted, their vote a prize to be won. I don't need my rep to talk to me personally. Solidarity is an easy word to say but a more difficult thing to do. Be nice if it wasn't "all about me". Be nice if we prized cooperation. Be nice if we stopped waiting for someone to rescue us, and didn't expect markets to solve our problems. Sadly, we're each chasing paper, making profits, and our communities suffer. However, in my not so humble opinion, work is nothing special. We should not be racing each other to the bottom so we can brag about how long, hard, and often our ass can take a pounding. To paraphrase Bill Clinton, "It's the Oligarchy, Stupid!" Our priorities should be cooperation, community, and caring for each other. Cash and capitalism can be secondary. No one is coming to save us. We're going to have to do it ourselves

If you are talking about the ceasefire with Gaza, that may not be possible. A ceasefire requires both sides to be held to account. Neither Hamas nor Gaza are recognized as "countries", and cannot be held accountable. Netenyahu isn't as sophisticated as those who were in charge during/after the 1972 Olympic kidnappings. They got rid of the offending parties quietly. His method is barbaric and inhumane. As far as the oil project, hopefully she voted on it because it is difficult to access. I remember an oil lease that ran out because, even though they figured out where the oil was, there wasn't a US ship big enough to transport the drill that was needed to access it.

These sort of political approaches are great - it would certainly be helpful if Democrats actually acknowledged and addressed the frustration of those being drawn to the Republican party. It is pretty obvious that their strategy this year will be to pound abortion rights into the ground as it seems to be a winning but still polarizing position when they should also be aggressively addressing many other important bread and butter issues exactly as your panel suggests.
BOTH parties seem to have lost whatever integrity they might once have had, playing to polls, pimping for campaign funding....... they have been around so long, both parties are corrupt at their core. We desperately need new blood in both parties (or easier access for 3rd and 4th parties), it is very telling that the Democrat and Republican party leaders are offering us 2 old white men, both well beyond their prime.

It means buyers will notice that anything available on Amazon will always be the best price there, so they stop bothering to shop anywhere else, and eventually all the other storefronts go out of business. Something that you hear in the trades quite a bit is people in colleges getting frivolous degrees, reflecting on the statement about "graphic designers." Why do you think kids do that? Are they just lazy, or do they see that tradesmen ruin their bodies, typically, by the time of retirement? I have a coworker now that took the first desk job he could leaving the field because he wanted to be healthy when he retired.
I think a lot of people who "do labor," equate the legitimacy of their labor with suffering, but why? If the building got raised but it was so smooth that no one had to strain a muscle, is the building any less up?
I think we need to focus on the ways we can preserve the bodies of tradesmen, and the thing is that there are technologies, like pro-press and victaulic grooved fittings, that make it so much easier on the body to get the work done. The problem is that people use this as an excuse to pay people less. Because you're not suffering as much, you're not "earning the money." Nevertheless, the building is still raised.
But like this is the same problem we had with the Cotton Gin. Eli Whitney wanted it to make the lives of cotton workers easier, but it did the opposite, exploding production and giving capital holders another way to exploit their workers (at that time slaves? I don't remember). that dynamic seems endemic, that anything done to save the body will be turned to hurt it more, in the trades.
Maybe that's why everyone wants to be a graphic designer, eh? Maybe people would go into the trades if they actually believed it would be a pleasant job where they can build a skill and it won't ruin their body. is that really such a silly thing to expect?

I think it's similar to the whole "don't go into big theory talk, keep things very grounded in specific, real life examples." I'm having that conversation a lot with my parents these days, where I can get them to agree that all these different aspects of capitalism are seriously messed up -- corporations gaining effective monopolies over basic necessities is bad, corporations having control of the government is bad, corporations being able to blatantly break laws because it only costs them a fee a fraction of their profits is bad, people being trapped in wage slavery is bad, people not having a livable wage is bad, consumerist culture is making people miserable (which is bad), people having more control over their lives is good, more democratic workplaces like worker-owned companies are good -- they agree with all of these points, some of them enthusiastically so, but as soon as I say "capitalism" I've lost them. They've got so much conditioning telling them "free market good, unions and socialism bad," that you really have to lead them by the hand to each specific issue you want social protections or corporate regulations on to keep from spooking them. And then, yeah, they often enthusiastically agree. I was raised to be anti-consumerist, anti-wage-slavery by people who are now surprised I'm critical of capitalism T-T

I agree that something must be done about predatory student loans but If the university lies to students about the value of a degree, then we should pass laws to seize the university's endowment. Imagine that I take out a loan for a used car that turns out to be a dud, should the government pay the loan? Or would you support my effort to take the car dealer to court and have them pay for it? In this example if the government decides to "forgive" the bad car loan then the dealer (university) simply continues to sell bad cars (degrees), and collects a check from the government when they are proven worthless. The only people hurt are the tax payers who pay for the government's "forgiven" loans. The only people who benefit are the corrupt car dealers (universities). If you force janitors, and truck drivers to pay for the false advertisements of universities they will turn to the political party which does not do so.

There is a mountain of difference between today's labor friendly Democrats and the average Democrat even just 10 years ago. If you want to build a better more equal society that is going to start by getting these labor friendly Democrats elected rather than the Kyrsten Sinemas of this world. Frankly whether they call themselves socialist or not is pretty insignificant compared to revitalizing the labor movement which would be the bedrock of any socialist movement. A few socialist representatives aren't going to come first, a strong labor movement that votes for them will.

There is no need for a moral judgment of the person due to a fair criticism.
There's also NO substantial difference between the SocDems and RadLibs of today, and those of, say, 1912 Russia, or late 1800s Germany a la Bernstein.
One can recognize the positive role a progressive organization can play for the movement, while distinguishing between liberal reform and radical change - there's a wealth of historical examples demonstrating the long-run impotence of MERE reformism, and its tendency to deradicalize people, maintain the overarching status quo. Better social services would be nice, but when will western internationals cease the violent superexploitation of the global south? Even Scandinavia refuses to comment..

Fear and worry, the creation of panic, are the bread and butter of most media outlets and political operatives. They are sensational in the moment but not satisfying in the long run.
