    Cool video! I was given a PSS-480 like 20 years ago- it's a blast! People see it and think it's a toy, but I have definitely done the deep dive with parameter manipulation on it, I swear nobody I've ever talked to has even heard of these before, so it's great to see it getting some love here.

      Wrong Bing! the PSS-480 was my first synth! I used it with a Yamaha QX-21 two track sequencer!
      Made some banging tracks with it! Stored all my sequences via Cassette interface from the QX-21. The thing was a real musical synth instrument. It had full 16 midi channels 12 note poly! and full Midi in-out-thru. I loved it!

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  2 года назад +2

      Ha yeah I had a QX sequencer for a while. Storing data on the cassettes was a particular challenge for some reason even though it's tech i grew up with so I'm familiar with the method. I had to track down a specific tape deck to get it to work properly 😄

    Awesome model! I'm a big time PortaSound and PortaTone lover. The 80s and 90s models of Yamaha keyboards have so much personality, character and style! (Just like the Korg Workstations of 80s and 90s). Nowadays they mostly just produce digital plastic junk keyboards.

      @@ChrisLodyMusic Yes indeed, they tried hard and succeeded! The newer keyboards are often very boring, they offer nothing interesting! Unlike the 80s & 90s Yamaha & Korg keyboards for example.

    I had a pss790 in the early 90s. It was awm not fm, had 5 octaves of mini keys. Full midi in out and thru. An 8 track 8 song sequencer. And a vector joystick for morphing between sounds. I used it with an Atari STFM and an alesis mmt8 for sequencing as it was 16 part multitimbral. And I could also do a sysex dump of the internal sequencer to the Atari. Oh happy days. Also you could use the pitchbend on the drums, and there was a way of reversing the bend so bending up lowered the pitch and vice versa.

    Hi very good production you are creating. I have a PSS-580 that is the same as the 480. I am attempting to play arpeggios from another keyboard and attempting to get the 580 to play arpeggios via midi but to no avail. I have midi out from the other keyboard that has arpeggios to midi in on 580. The midi signal is being received as when I play notes there is a response. Do you happen to know how I can have arpeggio play on the 580 from the other keyboard? Thank you.

      yep i found it at a yard sale without box nor alimentation, the keys are pretty yellowed and it makes a nasty static noise when turned on but everything else works properly.
      did you ever experienced such an issue ? i think it may come from the alimentation i use, even if it works perfectly with my good'ol PSS-270

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  7 лет назад

      Gerris Lacustris Do you mean power supply when you say alimentation? If so that could be an issue but they are a little bit noisy anyway, they tend to have a high frequency whistle when being used. But it might be worth trying batteries or another power supply and see if it makes any difference

    • @gerrislacustris328
      @gerrislacustris328 7 лет назад

      oh yes i meant power supply (english is not my first language so the words i use might be a little off).
      it does quite a loud buzzing sound like 'prprprprprprpr', i'm definitly gonna buy some batteries because i wan't to get my PSS-270 outside eheh.
      thank you for answering :)

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  7 лет назад +1

      Gerris Lacustris No problem. A bad power supply is most likely then. Batteries are the purest form of power so it'll sound it's least buzzy using them.

Are the melody and chord settings you save in the buttons retained when the power is off so that you can use them again i.e do they use non-volatile storage? Are there any other settings that are retained in the same way? I'd be grateful for your advice.

The best thing to do is to back the memory up to a computer using a midi sysex dump and then you can load it back in at any time

    Hi. I just found the PSS-480 in a kind of shed, missing a battery cover and power adapter (asia 220v). I'm not sure it's working coz' it may have been rained on. Where can you buy an original power adapter (could be 100v or 110v, I'll just glue it to a transformer) and original cover? Thanks. Btw, I wonder if this keyboard is good to modify to circuit bend?
    Is this model a toy by the way? Or is it used by professionals, like Roland.
    God bless, Proverbs 31

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  4 года назад +1

      SevenDeMagnus Almost any 12v power supply with a positive centre connection will work as long as the plug fits so see what you can find in your country with those specs. The battery compartment will be almost impossible to find though to be honest. Yo’d have better luck finding one on another keyboard, though it wouldn’t be impossible to make one if you know anyone who’s good at crafting things. I’m not sure about mods and circuit bending it. I’ve done a bit of that myself but I’m happy with this one the way it is so I don’t want to risk breaking it.
      I wouldn’t say it’s considered to be a pro keyboard no, but it’s much better than a toy. So somewhere in between I’d say

    Getting the 580 for 25€ next week (The person who sells it said in the description, that its a keyboard for children because of the small keys. Little does she/he know... :D). Thought about getting the 480 for 40€, but it that would have been 2 hours of additional time on train. i am happy I waited for a better deal. Are there even any noticable differences between the 480 and the 580? Was not able to find out from a quick look into the manuals. Nice tutorial by the way ;)

      @ChrisLodyMusic  7 лет назад +1

      darxkai Thanks. The only difference is a cosmetic change of colour and the presets are in a different order. That's it. 25€ is a good deal! Yeah they're often mistaken for toys so good find!

      Yes sadly the memory on these machines is extremely unpredictable. Sometimes they will remember and sometimes not. Always best to make something and record it straight away, preferably with the keyboard plugged into the mains supply

    Hey, are the buttons on the top fixable?Cuz im planning to get a 480 but its missing some...
    Great turtorial BTW, very underrated channel!

    • @ChrisLodyMusic

      Thanks. They're the rubber button with carbon back type which are usually a bit of a pig to fix, especially if the rubber bit is missing. There's plenty of them around in my experience so it'd be worth finding a fully working one.

      GilMoreno The instructions would be basically the same with buttons in different positions but I suppose it'd be worth doing for clarity. I'll add it to the list of things to record.

      the PSS-790 isn't an FM synth keyboard, it's PCM sample-based.

    Just an idea for a nicer (?) acid line. If you slow the 'record tempo' to something like 40bpm you could much easier punch-in almost steptime speed 16th notes; this would be a nicer pattern to then edit imo

    • @squishmusic
      @squishmusic 4 года назад

      ...of course it was better to run sequences into it from a QY10 (back then) :D

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  4 года назад

      Ha yeah I had one of those for a while, fun to use but damn they were a pain to edit things together 😄 Slowing down that much on the Pss is a good idea if it works for you but personally I find if I slow down too much I loose the rhythm completely and struggle to find my place

      @@ChrisLodyMusic havent tried but i figured at such a low tempo one doesnt need to feel the tempo just count the 16ths (so count 32note entried for a 2bar loop) ...and hit random notes. Much like I did with the 303 sequencer. :D

  • @ClarenceFM

      @ChrisLodyMusic  7 лет назад

      Clarence G I’m not sure to be honest. I don’t have one to try it on but I know it doesn’t have a very deep sequencer so that’s a bit of an obstacle. If real-time tweaks work though at least that would be fun

      Leon Vanderschaaf 1989 I believe. The 480 came out in 1988 which has the same architecture but different colours

    Do you know how to send MIDI without the drums? I figured out how to play the chords memory via MIDI but the rhythm plays too.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  5 лет назад

      I’ve not tried this but I think you could probably just switch off the Rhythm button (on the left on the 480 and 580) and this will mute the drums. I think this is correct, mine is in the attic at the moment while we try to sell our house

    • @Mac_Fleetwood
      @Mac_Fleetwood 5 лет назад

      No prob. Thanks for the info. You can actually manually press the Rhythm button to shut off the drums but you have to press it every bar.

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  5 лет назад

      Oh that’s odd. Maybe there is a midi method. There’s quite a deep midi implementation section in the back of the manual that you can download from Yamaha direct. I’ll have a look in a bit too

    hello mate could you please tell me what cable i need to get aux/phones into a mixer please

    • @ChrisLodyMusic
      @ChrisLodyMusic  2 года назад

      It depends what the inputs on your mixer are but a guitar lead will do it if it fits, by which I mean a 1\4" to 1\4" mono cable. The output is mono apart from the drums so if you're just looking to connect it for synth that will do.
