- Q&A: How does the recent UFC title win of Zhang Weili affect the MMA business in the People's Republic of China? Shanghai-based Mixed Martial Arts coach and fight commentator Ramsey Dewey responds.

Right now Tony Ferguson is laying down on a Florida beach daring Hurricane Dorian to come into his guard.
Hahaha loll !!

He'll utilise the 'twister' ...

dude, why haven't you gotten on joe rogans podcast yet, the talk you two could have about the culture difference let alone martial arts would be amazing.
Let Joe Rogan know that’s what you want.

First though Ramsey needs to know about DMT

His voice is so unbelievably epic it triggered some sort of insecurity in me I didn't even know I had and made me dislike him and then I had to work through it before ultimately realizing this guy's fucking awesome
Ramsey dude you fight 5rounds in mma match in boxing gloves choke the dude 2 time you are a badass 😈
I was wondering, how da hell you choke someone out with a boxing glove XD but prob to him man LOL
U should see me choke someone out with my kitchen mitts.
Please, would you give us a short update in a couple of weeks if more people show up in your gym after the fight? Greetings from Germany!
But the real elephant in the room is the fact that there aren't fortune cookies in China. It was a sad day for me when a Chinese friend told me that.

You cannot win rigged fight. The ref/judge will still announce the "rightful winner" won.
He didn't get a money though
Even though it's sad you didn't get paid for that rigged fight, I find it both admirable and hilarious how you managed to submit a guy using boxing gloves. Either the opponent sucked really bad or you were the better fighter. i'll posit that both were true.
I See Your A Man Of Culture As Well
I've grappled a few times with boxing gloves in my early days of first learning mma and jujitsu. But my wrestling background helped a bit. Still hard for sure since grabbing is harder. But I was able to win a round by rear naked choke.
@@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 crazy I went through the same thing my first time training in MMA.I had a high school and collegiate wrestling background.I bought boxing gloves and loosened up the grip on them for grappling by cutting some thread between the thumbs.Idk if it was "cheating" but I kept it to myself for insurance.😂
@@KWillo and it wasn't that we didn't have mma gloves, we started doing just stand up stuff, then the coach would sometimes say, ok all mma. Without letting us change gloves first. Only happened a couple times.
@@fireeaglefitnessmartialart935 I had that same thing happen in one of my first MMA classes, too lol. It's a fun experience.
That title fight was 100% real, Jessica Andrade fought the same way she always fights and Weili made her pay for it.
Sweet thanks for doing this video! I was one of the many who asked for a video about this thanks for responding to your fans

That fight was 100% legit. Amazing fight from an amazing fighter. But that is a very interesting perspective you bring to the table. I did not realize all of that was going on. So, this is UFC, what about other big promotions like 1FC?
In regards to the growth of MMA, when I was in Sasebo there were two training centers. Both were very informal. Just some Judo, Karate, BJJ, Westling, Boxing and Muay Thai guys getting together and mixing it up. Every once in a while on the train, I would see some windows of a gym where people where kicking banana bags. It was near Fukuoka. Anyway.

1fc is the best in my opinion.
@@yaboi-km2qn Unfortunately I haven't seen a lot from 1fc. I believe it's free and I am following on instagram. I just haven't gotten in there enough to know it well. I am a Angela Lee fan, but outside of the big 3 UFC guys that transferred over, I am unaware of any of the fighters.
@@mpforeverunlimited I was very surprised by how casual the getting together to train was. Once training started, it was very strict. For example, I tried to get in with the Kyokushin guys, but they bounced around nightly and only did one class a week in my area.
I've seen several of your videos and I must say that I am happy to hear your thoughts on fighting. Respect.
Always enjoyed all your side stories in addition to the main topic. Keep it up, Sifu Ramsey! Bonus english lesson today! 😆
Hey coach, calling Sanda a part of wushu or kungfu is definitely not wrong or some sort of a confusion, it's the "keyboard warriors" who make a mess out of this. I live in Europe and our national Chinese martial arts federation is actually called the "Romanian Wushu Kungfu federation", I was a member back when I was fighting in Sanda competitions (b.t.w. I never owned or worn any special Chinese clothing while doing it, we used generic sports outfits just like you do). Wushu is an umbrella term covering a lot of related but different things, not only the basic forms you're generally referring to. Yes it includes various forms demonstrations (including weapons), but also many types of actual full contact fighting, of which Sanda is just the most most popular (probably because it's the only one officially considered a world-wide regulated sport). I agree that Sanda is in some ways a mixed martial art, but in other ways it's less complex and more limited than other kinds of wushu fighting, there's a lot more to this than the highly regulated Sanda ring competitions.
It was a double KO night. Zhang telling Cejudo to go to Thailand and have a sex change for her to fight him for the "Intergender Championship belt" was almost as impressive as that skillful win over Andrade.
Great video as always
Man You are a real character to be sure. (In the nicest and most amiable way)

Cool video bro
An exceptional episode. Thanks for providing a broadening experience, Ramsey.
If you don't mind my expressing an opinion:
1) Product Recognition is extremely important. That's what "Hype" is all about.
2) Choosing opponents carefully to maximize product recognition is also extremely important. (Our Brand versus "Brand X"). And it works . . . until you get a "Buster Douglas whups Tyson" moment.
3) Worked fights have been happening regularly since "Bruticus vs Sparticus" bouts between Gladiators. They will always be underfoot, ruining your reputation and the veracity of reporting. That's because promotoers don't want to keep having to groom talents for success every time an honest bout slays their favorite.
Conclusion? It will always happen and most every promoter is just a Don King wanna-be. They will never learn, because . . . money blinds the most discerning eye. When you fight, you do it for a reason. When promoters book fights, they do it for a reason, too . . . only it isn't your reason.
The way you talk, the way you explain things, and the voice you have is a really good combination, basicly you're a great talker (idk the correct term but i think you get what im trying to say)
I dont care about the topic, even if you talking random stuff you can still have my full attention 😅

Hi Ramsey, thank you for all of the value you provide, I have learned countless lessons from you. My question for you is this (and sorry if you may have answered it in a previous video), are you thinking of going into any professional fights in the future? Do you have any fights up on youtube? Asking because I would love to see your style and learn from your fights. Thank you. Much love from VA

thank you Mr. Dewey, you are a nice and passioned and honorable man. very insightful and deep thoughts.
Thanks for this video Ramsey! I love Zhang and was 100% certain that she had the skills, drive, and best possible environment to get it done, very happy for her. In her interviews she seems very interested in taking on the toughest challengers, but as you said that might not be in the UFC's best interest.
I'm curious, I'll be moving to Nanjing soon and was wondering if you had any suggestions for MMA gyms there? Thanks in advance! Love your channel man.

I think its a great thing to have a diverse group of champions from different countries. It forces "open market" competition and the strive for excellence.
I really enjoy the way you tell stories
Mr. Smith is a mma fighter in China
It is ironic how they tried to create an image of supremacy fixing fights and instead they just created a general environment of doubt about the legitimacy of fighting events
Thx for saying this! Woaw! So powerfull and true!
Great video bro
I mean i don't think the fight was fixed. Andrade is not even champion material imo, the fight vs Rose she was being completely and utterly dominated until she happened to smash her in an unfortunate angle.
Yeah she didn’t have much skill comparative to other fighters in her division. Rose was basically picking her apart piece by piece

thanks for your insight coach.
i think it's very interesting to hear from a mma coach in china, where the sport is still very young.
especially in the perspective of the big market forces in the sport is trying to make their way into China
Your insight is uniquely important.

The Chinese seem to be a very unscrupulous bunch where shameless cheating is not only allowed but encouraged. In every industry.
That’s Actually Americans.
The Observer I'd call Americans many things but as a whole unscrupulous isn't one of them. As a whole I'd give that one to the Chinese.

I don't know what made me click on this video, but I watched every bit of it and subscribed. I've never heard of you before but I'm now a fan. Are years and yurs both acceptable pronounciations? ;)
always thought it sounded a Chinese, maybe it's a habit from living in china for a while?
Hi, Ramsey! I always watch your channel and I'd like to congratulate you for the good work. One of the things that I really like is the fact that you use your videos to think and express the things you think about and not just to talk about fighting 100% of the time. And you do it without losing track of your subject, that is fighting. Just as you did in this video. I loved your insights about nationalism and national promotion strategies, linked with your comments about the specific fight in question - and you could expand this line of thinking to reach the socialist central planning of the economy, which seems to be somehow still present in China, although not in the strict communist sense of the concept. And your final line of thinking in this video, about the possibility of UFC not giving a rematch to Jessica Andrade or giving a chance to other competitors that doesn't deserve a title match with Zhang Weili so that UFC can become popular in China... And, as you questioned the centrally planned interests of China, I question the interests of the market, of the business... Just as the centrally planned China promotes its interests through fake fights to create the next hero for the glory of the People's Republic of China, the business minded UFC promotes its interests through selected matches so Weili becomes a hero for the glory of the UFC brand and it's profit...
Well, sorry for the long text and possible english errors... Greetings from Brazil!

Does USADA test the athletes when they fight abroad? She looked huge, not saying she is juicing ,but I would not be surprised. Would also not be surprised if the Chinese authorities would help cover it up to get one over on the US.
@austin stevens The UFC is is American company. A Chinese champion in an American organisation is a huge deal to them.
people who train 2-3 times a day and eat super healthy will end up looking like that most of the time, especially if they have a good strength&conditioning program, plus good genes. also, USADA test all their athletes, no matter where they are
@@Lbvg That wouldn't make your forehead grow, or develop your neck muscles like Andrade. There are biological limits, and brazilian fighters are known for being pretty liberal with "the juice". I can only expect that to be equally bad or worse in China. So, from the "science project" perspective, it was a fair fight.
Why does Ramsey Dewey always has this furrow?
It could be a frown from constantly analysing the mystery of life and the universe? Or as someone pointed out to me it's also an indication of a stressed Liver (Ayurveda I think) anyhow because of that information given me I went for a check up and sure enough I had a damaged liver which I now have to take care of... Maybe Ramsey should get a check up? Maybe he's taken one to many liver shots (non alcoholic type).
Ramsey's FINE 'Oooooh Aaaah'..He's likely to enjoy analysing Life, the Universe & everything because he's an appreciator of 'the Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy'.......'Ooooh Ahhh' ??? - Sounds like a deputization from a 'Janov Primal Scream' therapy group.....lol
Hi brother!
Great show. I really liked that you took the time to talk about worked fights.
One thing that i do believe should be covered, is that Weili is NOT THE FIRST CHINESE to win a world championship.
That honor goes to a young lady by the name of Xiong Jing Nan aka the Panda.
She took the strawweight title in ONE FC earlier this year.
She is currently going for a two division title this October in Tokyo.
Not to take anything away from Weili.
Keep on rockin' brother.
Besides appreciating your insightful teachings & opinions, another reason that I love watching Your videos is simply to hear your Beautifuluse of the English language.

Ramsey, thank you for enlightening us on how fixed fighting in china is, I guess it follows the Pride tradition if fixing fight's.
When you talked about that fixed fight you were in, that 'what type of bullshit...' blank stare says it all. XD
What VPN do you use in China?
Thanks for sharing. When you found out that the fights were fixed and that you participated in, did you quickly and safely turn yourself into local authorities, notify the proper athletic commissions and pay back all proceeds to the IRS?
I don’t think you understand what “fixed” means. When someone loads their wraps and attempts to murder you in a cage fight, you don’t turn yourself in and give away your fight purse.
