Cup Winners' Cup was actually a tournament that had teams who won the FA Cup or the equivalent trophy in their countries. United won it twice in the 80s and in the 90s.

Man, thought you’d track back to earlier times when Juve with Zidane, Del Piero and Inzaghi dazzled Europe under Lippi. There was a UCL group stage game when they travelled to Monaco who needed to win by two goals to stand a chance to qualify for the knockouts. They tried and it was a showcase for young cubs, Trezeguet and Henry, who went on to greater heights.
There were also fab unfancied teams like Leeds and Deportivo La Coruna that punched above their weights.
My earliest memory of live Football on TV was two unheard clubs playing the (ahem!) Cup Winners Cup. Vialli’s Sampdoria beat Anderlecht.
There was also the off-season PSV tour of India in ‘87, when they played 3 games. India lost 0-7; 1-8 and 0-4 (last was a combined club team)

We were great at football till AFC level. We were winning tournaments and medals back then. But, during 1970s we just did not send our team to tournaments. During which 1971 England cricket tour happened and cricket started growing in popularity and 1983 world cup was the final nail in the coffin. Where Cricket just boomed and swallowed all other sports.

One year down the line this is one of the funniest TISS episodes. But what more funny is Azeem saying in their peak Ronaldo was more complete, and uses dribbling and aerial threat as example. Sadly in their peak, Ronaldo and United saw Messi score a header to sink them in the UCL final and Ronaldo and Madrid saw Messi score a solo goal to sink them in the UCL semi.

TV commercials did dictate the way sports makes money and in turn gave reach to masses.. and no sports can give you so space for ads than cricket.. where after every one over you get to show 3-4 ads..
