  • My Family and I took a 2011 trip to Keystone, South Dakota this Summer to see all the sites in that area. We hit Badlands National Park first and what a site it was. It was surreal driving across the South Dakota Grasslands where you see a lot of rolling hills covered with grass and then all of the sudden you run into the Badlands. It was great landscapes where ever you looked and the colors and layers of the eroding land was amazing! Enjoy
Here is some more info on the Badlands:
Badlands National Park, in southwest South Dakota, United States preserves 242,756 acres (982 km²) of sharply eroded buttes, pinnacles and spires blended with the largest protected mixed grass prairie in the United States. Efforts to preserve this uniquely scenic geologic setting east of the Black Hills led to the establishment of Badlands National Monument in 1929; it became a national park in 1978. This park is marked by rugged terrain and rock formations that resemble landscapes from another world.
The Badlands Wilderness, designated by Congress in 1976, is located entirely within Badlands National Park and is managed by the National Park Service. Badlands Wilderness includes 64,250 acres (260 km²) of the most pristine sections of the national park. Within this wilderness, buffalo still roam free and visitors can also find bighorn sheep, coyotes, mule deer, as well as the most endangered land mammal in North America, the black-footed ferret, which was re-introduced to the Wilderness area.
The Stronghold Unit of the park, which is located within the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, is co-managed with the Oglala Sioux tribe. This is the site of the Stronghold Table where in the 1890s the Sioux Indians performed their Ghost Dances.
Strikingly beautiful and mystical, the Badlands take their name from both the Lakota Sioux tribe as well as French fur trappers. The Lakota referred to the area as Mako Sica while the French called it les mauvaises terres a traverser. Both mean bad lands, or a difficult place cross.

    Hi There,
Just looked at the map and we drove in on Route 90, from the East. We hit Exit 131, Cactus Flat and entered the park at that Exit. Drove the 240 Badlands Loop Road and Exited at Wall, Exit 110 on Route 90 where we went and ate lunch and shopped around. Hope you get there to visit, such a fantastic place! We loved it.. Hope this helps you out.

@uncledave10 It is very unique here Dave and its just miles and miles of this in every direction. I think you would love it out west seeing our national parks. This was my first trip out west and I do want to go back or further west and those plans may be in the works for next year. More to come from South Dakota :-) Thanks for your comment.

@kookiemoose It is indeed a beautiful place in many ways and the formations are wonderful to look at. It would be very interesting to spend some time there hiking around also and they don't seem to care where you walk. People were walking all around these formations to my surprise. I know it is a place you would love to explore for sure.. Thanks for stopping by..

It is amazing to see what the earth offers us and how long things have been around in the making to see such beauty from them in our lives. @rolmos213 From what I recall there isn't any lodging real close to the Badlands entrance we went into. Where we came out of the Badlands there is a city called Wall where the famous Wall Drug is and I know there are some places to stay there. So you would have to drive past it first to stay at Wall unless you stayed more east of Badlands. There are so many places to stop in Badlands I'm sure you could spend nearly a day just seeing everything and its very windy most of the time. Enjoy!

@rolmos213 Rapid City, SD is the closest major town to there. It's probably abou 40 miles or so up highway 44 northwest out of the Badlands. I believe there is a KOA campground very close to the entrance to Badlands National Park.

i haven´t been there yet, but i defintely will go there.
maybe you could recommend some kind of travel guide for the whole region? it´s not so easy to find something i found out.
thank you in advance and best regards

@KJ4TUG Thank You! :-) I'm glad you enjoyed. It is a fantastic place to visit and I would recommend it to anyone. While you see it here on video you just can't get the feel of it as it is in person. To see how many miles this place covers and how vast everything is is just breathtaking. I would love to go back here someday and spend more time there and maybe stop at a few more places. There are many places to stop and look around, we may have stopped at half of them?

Thanks for the great video! We are passing through in August and are short of time. Could you please tell me which route/road you were on, so we can go straight there?
    Thanks

@FearDaB3ast Yes, but it is quite limited. Here is what I found (Bicycles are allowed only on designated paved, gravel, and dirt roads within the park. They are not allowed on hiking trails, closed roads, or in the backcountry. There is no off road cycling in Badlands National Park. The mixed grass prairie is easily impacted by wheeled traffic. The badland formations are centuries old, yet very fragile.)

probably too late now, unless you did your own "research"
but there ARE two campsites and a lodge, IN the park...

All this area was underwater at one time in the distant past. Look at the water mark lines on all the hills. The erosion of the hills appears to be from rushing water, not wind. Can anyone say "THE GREAT FLOOD" ? Amen.

    • @Marty933
      @Marty933 10 лет назад +1

It was a shallow sea, not just a flood. This is the area where so many t-rex skeletons have been found and many skeletons from sea dinos. I live in SD and have traveled this area extensively. The most amazing trip was about 3 years ago. while I was in the Badlands a severe thunderstorm moved through, complete with a couple of tornados and tons of lightening. It was frightening and thrilling all at the same time!
