"Mama Used to Say" is the debut single release by the British R&B recording artist Junior, taken from his debut studio album, J
I was 8 years old when this dropped and it was heavily played in the US!!!! I used to jam out to this and I still know the words!!!
🤣
Omg. Takes me back to disco rolling skating grade school bday parties! This is the jam! Video does not measure up!
This was one of the biggest club hits in the UK in the summer of 1982. Junior was also in the group Linx who had big hits with Intuition and Throw Away The Key.
That’s David Grant you’re thinking of. 😉
Early 80’s pop song!!!!! Goooood memories from my youth years!!!!! ❤
I grew up with this song. Sampled in the 90s by Warren G - Do you see and Heavy D and the Boyz Is it good to you.
Love this song!
Junior was one of the first British R&B artists to be successful in the United States.
I was 13 when this came out in 1981.
I remember when he come on Soul Train Don Cornelius would tease him about his accent
Of course I remember this so being played EVERYWHERE! How is it I never knew he was British? I missed that fact! Lol
This got much airplay . I thinks it's a fun a catchy tune😄
He's got another good one called Too Late good jam but deep if you pay attention to the lyrics
Mama used to say !!!
I used to think he was singing “don’t you rush to ghetto” instead of “don’t you rush to get old”. 🤷🏽♀️ 😂😂 This song was in heavy rotation back in the day.
🤣🤣🤣I can hear that
Go Empress Go!
You need to check out the extended version of this jam. It has a longer intro, with the drums.
✅
I always preferred "Too Late", Juniors other big hit, to this one. This was good too though.
....Oh, it's 1982 AGAIN!! ...before I give trivia......I'm in SHOCK he had a Music Video for the tune!! ...SHOCK! ....They didn't show many R&B Videos then, but, this tune was HUGE!!! ....ah, well.....***JUNIOR (GISCOMBE) TRIVIA TIME!!!*** .....let's ask Mama 'bout ittttttttt......
- ....Oh, was this tune big!! ...full-on ASSAULT on the R&B charts!! ...out of NOWHERE!! ...hit the SAME time as "Don't You Want Me" (Human League).... peaked at #2 R&B (#30 Pop)...
...Someone else mentioned it, but he was THE first UK R&B act to hit in the USA....Billy Ocean could've been the first ("Nights (Feel Like Gettin' Down)" hit in 1981), but, he was from Trinidad, THEN went to the UK...Junior opened the Doors for Five Star, Loose Ends, Soul II Soul, The Chimes, Seal, etc.....
- ....Junior still records and tours, but, is MAINLY known for this 80's blaster, and, the VERY controversial follow-up, "Too Late", a Song about an abused Wife (with her children), leaves her abusive alcoholic Husband.....
- The 'cartoon House' Music Video is a homage to his Album Cover from 1982...whatta way to make People remember you! (4:39) ...ha-HAAA!!
Interesting about the video!
I first heard this song on the radio when I moved to NYC in 1981. I somehow related to the lyrics because i was20 and had just left my parents. I took a bus to NYC where I had never been before and I didn't know anyone there. I'm still here after 40 years. So, Junior's song is sentimental to me. But I didn't hear it that often so later in the 80s, when I saw the song on a cassette of dance tracks, I bought it. I like the musical sound effects in it, and the story of living your life.
That was the jam! You hear me?!
hahahaa
Believe it or not this video was state of the art for 1982 great song 🎧
Wow‼️
I was 12 years old when this song dropped and it was in heavy rotation on urban radio stations in the us, I just found out a few years ago that he was from the UK.
I wouldn't have guessed that either
Bone thugs n harmony sampled the beginning of this song for Thuggish Ruggish Bone
Lol the video is throwing you off. You must listen to the studio version. I believe you would have given it a fire bop 😊
🤣🤣dang
I agree Rashad.
The video was a bit distracting.
I watch another reactor called Just Jammin, and when he doesn’t like a video - he closes his eyes and just listens to the music! 😀
This was a top 10 hit in the UK singles chart (Junior was from England). It was a top 5 hit on the US R&B charts.
He’s one of my Facebook “friends” ha,ha! 😂
Nice guy!
This was big in the UK at the time!
🤣🤣oh wow cool
Ayeeee I was 11 when this came out loved it then and now! 🎼🎶🎵🎶
React to the other hit song by JUNIOR called "TOO LATE".
This '82 Junior smash played in heavy rotation here in SoCal back in the day, thought it was a cool tune back then and still feel the same forty years removed (haven't heard it in an eternity 'til now). Great Patreon pick! 👍
Three more good tunes of this genre are ' so this is romance'. ' you're lying' and 'intuition' by linx
Check out Darlin by Johnny Reid if you haven't already
Can’t stand this song but I’m glad you reacted to it. 😄
🤣
Sorry to ask... I noticed you seem to have sharp teeth x
they're bands
@@EmpressReacts Phew ! There I was thinking they were fangs ! lol Good videos ! Ride on Soul Sister.
I hated that song when it came out - and now I hate it even more. It's that little growl I hate. 😁
Also, to me as a 17 year old when it came out, he looked about 50. 😁
hahaha i can see that
