    God yeah! I used to hitch from Leeds to Manchester and back (across the Pennine mountains) to do the round of record shops, and budget OJC LPs were a big thing for me, learned so much. I got involved with the 80s "Jazz Revival" in the UK, and ended up writing poems about Leeds record shops for a Simon H. Fell project! Really enjoyed your video, Norman, the way you manage to bring all the old pleasures and important music to a new Internet audience. Yeah, smokin'!

    Great video Mazzy! And lovely that you highlighted Sunday at vanguard...fingers crossed we get an OJC reissue soon. The OJC guide looks interesting! I wonder if the problem is that labels don't appreciate YT as an accessible way to speak to the VC (maybe a role for your good self?)

    In the US, black musicians were not free to perform whenever they wanted by law until the late 1960s. There was something called the Green Book. No wonder most of them went to France during that time where some were surprised at the freedom they felt.

    Mazzy, Chad started with most of these around 2003 with the Fantasy series, starting with the best 25 (your favorite 2X12" 45 RPM), then the next 25 up to 100 that had all the Bill Evans, Monk, Coltrane, Baker and most others. These make up the Evans box and many of the current new releases. These are getting pricy so the new OJC and AS releases are welcome if they stick to Chads motto easy to press one after that be prepared to work hard and not sell us crap. Keep up the interesting content. Rich

      Agree also but MoFi had the same opportunity, if not a need, last summer to do the same but don't believe they've appointed a spokesperson to quasi-regularly interact w/ music & VC enthusiasts yet? Am not digging at MoFi; is simply an easy example, if not a contrast to VC interactions of other MFGs such as BN, AP/AS, etc.

    Just a little feedback on the Jazz Impressions of Black Orpheus Craft one-step. Just after I pulled the trigger on the pre-order I saw your video saying that they'd jumped the shark with this release. I was a little crestfallen that I might have been duped with this purchase. Good news though, I got it this week, and loved it.Sure, it's not necessary, and is a pricey version, but to my ears it sounds amazing. Getting more affordable re-releases from Craft is great news. I was in my late teens when OJC reissued all those titles in the 80s and it was just the thing for a young fan starting out. Very good prices and no nonsense but decent quality. If well kept they continue to play great , and are irreplaceable especially now that the market is so pricey. Also important to be reminded that there were so many important labels other than Blue Note with much to offer.

    I have roughly 45% of the OJC catalog titles from the 1980s and early 1990s. Really great stuff. Those were mostly pressed by one of the Columbia Records Plants, Pitman, NJ or Terre Haute, IN.
    These new versions should be more like the tone poets. Cut by Bernie Grundman and pressed by RTI on 180 gram. Should be excellent.

    Monk? What a unique enigmatic giant Monk was. There's many exotic personalities and fancy dans and cool dudes in jazz, but the mostest was Thelonious Monk and his Zen way of thinking. I had to read All the bios, see all the docs trying to fathom the man yet he always stayed inscrutable to his biographers and Clint decided the best introduction was just let the man dance. His solos stopped traffic. His playing was an ambidextrous take on the sound of one hand clapping. And when he finally stopped, it was another baffling koan, a tree falling in the forest with no one to hear it.

      Absolutely grab the 80s OJCs at those prices if you can. But even those have been creeping up in price.
      This isn’t as scam as these records should be in print and the cost of the materials and labor has increased dramatically . I do feel that since these are being released in house, they really shouldn’t sell for more than $30-35 US

    • @mymixture965
      @mymixture965 Год назад +3

      @@mazzysmusic With 30,00 I would think about them, but in general here in Europe when something goes for 39,00 in the US, here it is at least 45,00, I guess even closer to 50,00. This to me is to much and not because I am cheap, I pay way more for records, but for OJC´s? No way, I get the old ones cheaper, they are still out there because they pressed a lot, they are mostly all analog and people took care of them, I always find them in great condition. Let me clarify what I mean with "scam". I think with RUclips and all the new collectors coming in (wich is good) record companies know what they can charge, the tone poets gave a role model, so it is not what I costs to make this records, it is what people accept to pay for them. Just remember CD´s, how expensive they where sold to us, "because it costs so much to make them", sorry BS, we where stupid enough to pay that. So its about supply and demand and a "collectors" community with FOMO in there head. Btw, the "real" collectors always looked down on OJC´s, they where a place holder until you found an OG.

    This comes across as you realizing that there is 'big news' in the VC but you have nothing to add, you just want people to look at your monetized video.

      The price of vinyl today seems ridiculous if you built your record collection out of secondhand finds in the 70sand 80s. Like others, I got into so much music because it was despised and unfashionable at the time, therefore cheap (avantgarde classical, Jimmy McGriff, P-Funk, Free Improvisation and more). However, vinyl started as a luxury item (78rpms of opera singers sold in jewellery stores), and later became a mass medium ... So the cash-in vinyl revival will bring good results one day maybe. Meanwhile, I'll go and find Pink Anderson on RUclips (as someone said here, no BJC in the UK), download it and enjoy listening and broadcasting his music from a memory stick ... Good music via ANY MEANS NECESSARY to quote a great man.

      nobody is saying you need to buy them. But this premium formula is exactly was Analogue Productions has been extremely successful selling since 2014, customers begging them for more, so it's not shameful to give their customers what they want, even if you don't personally. You're not their market, clearly.
