Some of the best players in the world are 40+ (Daigo/Itazan/Momochi [38]/Tokido [38]) without the best reactions but with awesome anticipation so don't be discouraged if your reactions aren't the best, you should still be able to whiff punish heavy buttons but most mediums and lights it's anticipation.
this is good advice. the vast majority of whiff punishing most people will do is not what punk calls 'real' whiff punishing (on reaction) but from spacing traps and guesses in footsie range
I’m 37 and going to start SF6 tonight as the first fg to ever take seriously. Haven’t played fg since SF3, CvS2 etc… and even back then I was only a casual player.
I like this a lot. A lot of guides like this try to have an answer for everything, but punk just says straight up "I can't teach raw reaction, you just have to get good at it your way"
I just wanna say Punk, I fought u in Street Fighter V, and i must say, you've been a Neutral god since SF4, its always a pleasure learning from one of the greats. This helped alot. Thank you.
So: 1- Anti Air 2- Don't walk backwards too much. 3- Whiff Punish 4- Anticipation. Learn which attacks your opponent uses more and act accordingly. 5- Buffering. While you use normals, do the motion of the specials, in case the normal hits. 6- Spacing Traps. Use a button to create space between the characters, your opponent whiff, you punish them. 7- Practice your reactions. Set the dummy to do a bunch of random things and react accordingly.
Alot of people dont realize this when they get better at fighting games, but its omega important. Keep your eyes on your opponent not your own character. This makes it ez to react and u can use your periferal vision to manage your own spacing. typically people dont start playing a game like this, but over time as you get used to the game this becomes ezr.
Thank you thank you Punk. This helped me find what im missing. Buffering, and the speed i can back to back buffer. Its opening so much of the footsies. Thank you again.
Couple add ons for the spacing portion and walking around is that u want to have more real estate (space behind you) on the screen then the opponent as often as possible because if they’re closer to the corner and they have less space to work with causing them to usually make bad decisions forcing something such as a dash, jump, DI or throwing out huge buttons making it a lot easier to react with those whiff punishes and anti airs. Everything is easier to anticipate the smaller amount of space your opponent has. Also it does help to simply sit in training mode for a couple minutes a day with your main and trying to perfect space your moves in the training room at the longest ranges and simplified dp inputs, this is more of a old school training style for super new players but it definitely helps and I still do it from time to time before hopping on ranked. Lastly when I 1st started playing SF I often went from character to character trying to find who I’d play the best with but in the end it just slowed my growth so try your best to stick to 1-2 characters until you get comfortable with the actual game and its mechanics instead of hopping around a bunch.
@@vergils.lawnchairDo you know what makes your opponent jump? the game has layers, if your ground game is good, it forces jumps, whic makes knowing how to anti air better
Thank you punk I played back when it released but I stopped to play mk then tekken and with akuma coming out I wanna get back into sf6 and main him I wanna get nice so thank you for the neutral guide
Just hit Master recently and its tough fighting for MR. I have decent combos, AA and whiff punish for slow normals, but I really need to add buffering and spacing traps to take it to the next level. Thanks for this vid!
This is really good. I'm super late watching this but I realize now this is probably the thing that will help me the most and that I need to work on more
Thanks for the guidance, this will be very helpful in sf6 and probably a bunch of other fighting games as well. As always, another great guide from the goat 🐐
I feel like I hit a plateau recently as i'm trying to get out of silver into gold. so much valuable stuff here that helps with exactly what i'm struggling with, thank you Punk!
great segment on spacing traps, i feel like this alone can really level up someone's game. im a master guile player and dont intentionally do this so ill enjoy trying to implement it
Oooooooh PUNK ma maaaaiiiiiin man 🥳🥳🥳 thanks for making this type of content broski. Its a gem, am still playing sf5 too. Trying to buy 6 isn't easy in African region. Once Akuma drops, please do a guide on him
The thing is to even get into the range where you can whiff punish you gotta stop jumps and cross ups, raw drive rush and DI and know how to deal with every characters cheap neutral skipping tools. In plat and diamond people will avoid this distance like the plague. Definitely a great guide for higher level players from the best neutral master in the game.
I just started playing SF6 after not playing the series since 2 as a kid and I stink right now, so this was super helpful! The last tip was especially good since my reactions feel so slow because I spend too much time even processing the animations I'm seeing that by the time I know what button to press it's too late.
Just came back after an 8 month break (I'm new to fighting games, so my goal was to get to Platinum, which took like a week and a half of labbing and a week of ranked) and remember so very little. Lol So thanks for this!
Saving this for later. Feel like I’ve been getting by on gimmicks and I want to get better at neutral and footsies so bad. I can’t purposefully whiff punish if my life depended on it.
i just started playing sf6 havent played since super sf2. didnt play 3rd strike none of the alphas nor 4 or 5. hit diamond with zangief but started playing with manon and lost all my matches so i can learn from the ground up with her. about to hit diamond with her. havent played a fighting game in over 20 years lol
Boutta get to silver with this one 💪
Just got to bronze 😤 next stop, EVO
Lets go BIG DAWG
keep it going yall got this!
That’s pretty sad 😂
Im bouta get to Diamond with this one.

Anticipation isn't so hard when you're goading them into pressing it haha
Also a ton of it is spacing traps.
Boomers, unite!
I’m 37 and going to start SF6 tonight as the first fg to ever take seriously.
Haven’t played fg since SF3, CvS2 etc… and even back then I was only a casual player.
But what if I’m old AND SMOOTH BRAINED?! Lol
I'm 40 years old and you are a super hero to me. This reminds me of being 10 at the arcade with the college kids trying to teach me Street Fighter 2.
41 year old streetfighter fans checking in.
Another 40 year old SF player here, hehe! 😁
43, bro. 80's babies are still out here. Keep on fighting!
I like this a lot. A lot of guides like this try to have an answer for everything, but punk just says straight up "I can't teach raw reaction, you just have to get good at it your way"
When one of the top tier, best in the world type content creators drops a neutral guide like this, y'all best take heed
Nice, I just finished reading the footsies handbook and 2 hours later this drops. Much appreciated mr. Punk, great vid

Wow, I didn't expect to REIQ in Punk's comment section.

If it makes you feel any better, I’m in Master rank and I don’t think about spacing traps lol
"Space Trap" concept was mindblowing! Thank you so much, Punk. Good work, bro.

The man wins SF6 EVO , people better respect the knowledge.
you legit maintain my interest in this game, through solidAF gameplay it gives me something to strive for
❤️❤️
The timing for this couldn't be any more perfect

PUNK YOU ONE AND DONED ME TODAY I WAS THE 1400 MR ED I WANT MY RUN BACK
man really said "get better at anti air" legend rank tips right here. Amazing.
For real, every video about "how to improve" starts with anti air. I can anti air like a mf and I'm still stuck in Plat 5 😂
Damn I lowkey agree tho. Anti-air and combos got me out of plat.
But my Chun deals 2800+ on a successful anti-air
@itsmety5074 that's a nice anti air for sure, Idk what jamies DP does off the top of my head but it's not that haha

The first guide that explains neutral in a way that my non-fighting game brain can comprehend. You're a hero

I never knew about spacing traps. My jaw dropped at that segment. Thank you, Punk.

Very good Guide in my opinion, your guides are always a masterpiece and help us to improve, I know so many more things right now! thank you!
Punk neutral guide huh. Yup I’ll definitely be watching and rewatching this a lot. Cheers bro 🎉🎉
As someone who is learning, I appreciate this effort.
The best neutral video in sf6.
great segment on spacing traps, i feel like this alone can really level up someone's game. im a master guile player and dont intentionally do this so ill enjoy trying to implement it
this vid was very helpful I'm bouncing between gold 5 and plat 1 tbh my neutral is pretty trash lol so I'll defiently be practicing alot of this!

Nice tips, Punk! Emphasizing anticipation was a nice inclusion. I feel like that doesn’t get much mention when people talk about how to play neutral

If you look at how many old players do well professionally, reactions are significantly more important to halt neutral skips
Good Sh*T Bru..!! Many Blessings Punk..!!
Mannn, I really appreciate this, thank you. Also, I hope you stick with my girl Cammy. It's a thing of beauty.
That buffering thing is amazing I never knew that
