The reasons
Most of these Outlook errors occur due to various reasons such as incorrect account settings, oversized Outlook data files, MS Outlook internal application conflict, Windows firewall issues, incorrect Office installation, invalid User Id or password, virus threats, wrong port number for the outgoing (POP/IMAP) server, etc.

I don't know what I'd have done without this tutorial. I was getting ready to pull my hair out. Took me about 40 mins to go through the instructions, then BAM, I was in. Outlook was finally downloading.
Oh yes, and POP did not work for me. I went through the whole ordeal again with IMAP and that was the ticket. Oh and definitely had to go through the password generator on AOL too (which I have zero understanding of the reason).

This worked for me after struggling for 3 days to get Outlook to reconnect to AOL! Thank you. Curiously, the AOL site says you only need the app password if you use two factor authentication. We don't but we definitely needed it to make it work.

Yes, this worked for me. Close outlook(in this case office 365), go to Mail inside Control panel, create a new mail profile and when you set it up make sure you put in the app generated password in for the users email password. Uncheck test settings on close, and check SSL and port numbers for inbound/outbound. I setup this user with POP instead of IMAP. Thanks Muradi!
Thank you so much for posting this tutorial help. I haven't been able to access my aol email for the last week. This is on my PC, my iPhone and my iPad. I searched google and was able to find this tutorial. I had to delete my aol email account from Outlook first. When I tried to add it back to Outlook it still didn't work. That was until I followed your step by step instructions on your You Tube page. It worked like a charm. Thank you so much! Wow, obscure use of the Application password, but it did correct my problem. I had, however, removed and readded the account along the way. Next time I change my AOL password I hope that this works to update my IMAP connection without removing the email account.
Yes. The solution worked for my AOL account into Outlook. The Outlook suddenly started asked for AOL POP password all the time and was not receiving emails. Note: I have a big size data file for the email account. Thank you for your help.

I am using Outlook 2019 and I am not able to add my AOL email account as an "IMAP" Account. I am using the "App Generated Password" from the AOL account but Outlook 2019 keeps telling me that "Something Went Wrong". and then it puts my email address on the left hand side and sends a test email to the email account but it won't download anything from the server. I removed the email account and then set up the email again but this time as a POP account and this worked. The problem I have today is that all my emails from the last 11 years have suddenly disappeared from my inbox!!! Not just from my account but also from my family's AOL email accounts on all our apple devices and also on the AOL browser webmail. I noticed that the emails were still on outlook as it had previously downloaded them from the AOL server on to my PC and as the "POP" accounts do not synchronise with the server they were still available. After checking the settings I can see that if you go to the account properties of the AOL "POP" account it is set by default to delete messages on the server in 14 days! I have now backed up my emails as a .pst file in a local folder on my PC before I loose them for good. What I need help with is firstly getting my email address to work with Outlook 2019 again, in "IMAP" and secondly exporting the saved .pst file where all my old emails are back in to my inbox on the AOL server. I would really appreciate any help with getting this done.
HI PortTalbot1. Please open your outlook and go to the account settings and select server settings. In the server settings, Change POP to IMAP including port 993. You will have all your emails syncing again. as POP works for one device only and you use multiple devices which the server can't sync your emails. Let me know please if you still have issues

Hi Muradi, Awesome tutorial. I was able to get the AOL account into my Outlook but no mail is loading. I tried "Send and Receive All Folders" and also sent myself a test email from my gmail but no luck. The Preferences setting says "Work Offline" and its not available to click to "Work Online". I think that's the problem. Thank you for any help.
Actually, Muradi, I uninstalled and reinstalled using IMAP (instead of POP) and now the emails are loading. Thank you again for the video. It was EXTREMELY helpful.

Fantastic, but I can't open 2019 outlook, I am getting only small box with my email and option "connect". After pressing I am getting error "couldn't log on to the incoming (IMAP) server" could you please advise.
Hi KazimierzKacunel. First, try again with watching every step carefully. If it doesn't work, please send us the screenshots to our FB messenger, so we can help you there in a better way.
KazinuerzKacunel - You need to enter the following information.
1) Obtain your other device email password from your AOL account as this video describes
2) Enter your email address on outlook and choose "set up manually"
3) Choose imap
4) Use imap.aol.com and port 993
5) Encryption method should be SSL/TLS
6) Require log on using Secure Password Authentications
7) On outgoing email, enter smtp.aol.com and port 465
8) Encryption method should be SSL/TLS
9) Require log on using Secure Password Authentications
10) Enter your aol-generated device password
11) Your account should complete its setup.
I have tested this twice with Outlook 2019 and it worked for me
