One minor detail you missed is that some primers act as micro fillers, particularly Mr surfacer and alclad primers. Micro-filler primers fill in shallow scratch marks caused by sanding, which makes them ideal for anything you've had to sand to shape. The numbers on Mr surfacer primers are roughly indicative of the grit of sandpaper used to scratch the piece up, Mr surfacer 1000 for example will completely fill scratches from 1000 grit or higher sandpaper.
Just wanted to thank you for all your content and tutorials. I've been spending the past few days researching Gunpla, as I plan to get into Gunpla. Of all of the channels I've found so far, yours in particular has been one of the most the helpful (if not the most helpful) in providing concise, yet comprehensive information.
I just subscribed as I’ve been watching a lot of your videos whether it’s how to apply dry transfers or how to prime parts like this one. I got into the hobby earlier in the year and just started going beyond the gunpla basics like snap building and panel lining. These videos are really helpful.
with each video i learn more and more, while i cant apply some of the techniques just yet, namely cause im waiting on a company to ship the nozzle that they forgot to include in my package for my .5mm needle, you have kept me looking forward to each tutorial. you get to the point, and you give the necessary details. which i like alot. so i wanna say thank you ^_^
Primer is not paint. primer is a bonding agent that is used to seal thee surface of the material you are painting and help the pant to adhere to your material.
Thank you so much buddy! There's a few good reasons to prime, and that's more than enough for me. Especially if I need flawless paint jobs, like F1 kits that I like to do in conjunction with my Gunpla passion. I'll give Mr.Surfacer a go. Thanks again Henry!
Thanks a lot for the video. Thanks for answering question that bothering me all this time that is : primer help paint to stick, but my primer paint gives rough surface and if I sand it some area of the primer might gone. So either I should use levelling thinner to smooth the primer, or paint thicker layer of primer so that when I sand it there is still layer of primer on surface. Any comments or advice?
Thank you for sharing. I wonder what is your ratio of primer and thinner in airbrush? I tried 1:2.5, 1:3 and 1:4 in 0.3 airbrush.I feel not really good. May be the airbrush problem?Should I buy the 0.5 airbrush for primer? Sorry for so many question. Thanks again.
How do you apply dry transfer decals to a rounded surface? for example the wing zero customs right shoulder armor... i saw you didn't do it on your wing zero custom in your review video. Is there a way to accomplish that?
After using high grit Mr. Surfacer like 1000 or 1500, do I still have to sand it if I want to make super smooth surface? (with high grit sandpaper of course)
Hi once again, Like to know where the best place to / or you put the model car after its done with clear coat to dry/ cure and how long, so dust wont get on it so you can wet sand
Hi QDC! Im new into this hobby and just bought myself an airbrush, so I´m just woundering what kind of primer you are using for your tamiya models? Best Regards
i want to paint chrome, so i need a glossy black. but if i use primer first, i found my black a bit less glossy because after primer the surface is less smooth. any tips?
HENRY!!!! Lots of the cheap walmart primers (like Krylon - and most of the "primers") are just GREY paint. They don't sand well at all. Look for primers labeled "high build" as well as "sandable". Great video.
What do you finish your models with Lacquer gloss clear, panel line then throw on dullcote? I watched your HG 1/100 Wing Zero video and the transformation part have me worrying about rubbing paint off (Probably because I have used Vallejo). Your finish looks awesome compared to a gloss coat so I'd like to copy cat it :)
I live in Panama where you can't drive to a local hobby store and Buy Primer nor Paints I have to use what I can find, How could i prime a model with Art paint
If I'm just starting out and don't have a compressor/airbrush, are there any primers I can hand paint? Or should I stick with spraycan primer from a hardware store?
@@vegeta8259 Thank you! I just wasn't sure if primer absolutely *had* to be sprayed, or if it also could be diluted and painted. I'll have to try all sorts of methods eventually I suppose.
Say, I gotta ask. Does using cheap spraycan primer like the ones you mentioned have a high chance of causing bleed-through of certain colors? I've had reds bleed through white really badly when I was trying to paint one of my kits causing me to scrap the project altogether. That out of the way, this guide was very informative! Thank you!
***** Thanks for the answer! Guess I should look into switching primers. At least Tamiya Spray Primer won't cause that I hope (since that's what we have available where I live). Also, I forgot to mention that it also happens on cheap spraycan clear coats. Had that happen to my Sazabi and the red bled through the decal work.
Hi Henry your tutorials are awesome! I noticed you have a tutorial for just about every major aspect of building/painting Gunpla. However, I notice that you don't have a tutorial about "Seal Coating". Do you seal coat your Gunpla or just call it a day after you paint them with lacquer paints? I mainly use Tamiya acrylics to paint my kits and then I use different kinds of sealers depending on what type of look I like flat, semi-gloss, glossy, and clear. Do all sealers come in spray can paints or are there any kind that come in airbrush types (never seen them)? I"ve just recently in the past year have gotten into airbrushing and painting my Gunpla and it would be great to get tips on how to properly apply sealer and maybe show what each different type looks like. I have encountered the issues of sometimes my semi-gloss Tamiya spray sealer leaving my kits slightly sticky afterwards. Is this normal? I myself and I'm sure other of your viewers would appreciate your take on this topic. Would also make for another great tutorial video to add to your collection!
Thanks for the response! I'll check out Alclad top coats for my airbrush! I'm sure my wallet will thank you! LOL Glad to see someone else was curious about seal coating! Totally do a video on it please! Share your wisdom with us Gunpla Master Henry! =D
Nice one! I'm new to airbrushing and I've learned a lot from your video :) I have a question, I use the same primer as yours (mr surface 1000) and mixed it with tamiya acrylic thinner but somehow it dried so fast in my airbrush :(Is it normal like that? Thank you
Great video as always man! Quick question: what PSI do you use for your primer? Thanks a lot and keep up the awesome vids :)! Oh almost forgot what do you use to sand it afterward, like any certain gritt or anything? I've noticed if I try to sand after (using vallejo acrylic primer) it starts to chip at the primer on the edges
Just started watching your videos and this is a bit unrelated to this particular video. But I'm wondering what you do with all of your extra weapons and gear you get with your Gunpla? I assembled my second one ever...the master grade Dark Matter, and I have a butt ton of extra swords and what have you. Right now they are just on the Action base and around it. But do you have a drawer full of beam sabers or do you put them in a sandwich baggy next to the assembled and painted kit?
Brick in the Yard Model Supply carries a plastic-safe primer called Prime-It! I'm not sure what it costs, but it's brushable. It also works in HVLP hand sprayers (think auto body.) Check it out on their RUclips channel if you want to see it in action.
Oh and how long you normally leave the primer to dry. I saw the bottle of Mr Primer here in japan says 30-60 minutes. But i can touch it at minute 5 and it wont come out. What do you think?
hello good day sir vegeta... Im sorry this will be a bit unrelated but do you have video tutorial about your painting technique like the one you did with the nu ver ka.. on the white parts I really like your style with you gunpla white parts those smoke like effects it so cool.. I mean the blackish smoky patterns along some panel lines... can you teach us how to do it? thanks a lot in advance good sir...:)
The primer you used is a water based primer right? So do you have to thin it with acrylic thinners? It looks like that big yellow thinner bottle is oil based no?
Oh, Thanks, I think I just bought a primer that looks exactly like your bottle and it says water based and all my paints are enamel..... The paint won't eat through my water based primer if I let it try completely right? Or I'm I screwed.....?
So is the way it goes: You "MUST" use Acrylic primer if your painting with Acrylic base paint? And Enamel primer if your painting with Enamel paint? And Lacquer primer if your painting solely with a Lacquer paint?
If there are patches of primer left after sanding, wouldn't repriming add some uneven thickness to the pre-existing patches? Or do I do a light sanding over to make sure everything is even?
I saw modelers using the primer as a light mist instead than a thick layer of primer. Using the primer as a mist is just to help paint to stick to the surface better without wasting bottles and bottles of expensive primer. I didn't try by myself this technique. Someone of you did it?

What pressure are you spraying the primer at because I usely spray at about 20psi
can I replace primer with any other product? ( there is no such thing as primer on my country)
Is the mr surfacer primer ideal if I will paint the part white?
Don't they have metallic primers, too? I recall someone saying aluminum primer helps prevent bleed through with it under white.
how long do i have to wait for the primer to set, before sanding process?
Where can I get Mr.hobby cheap? Which one is better in comparison with Tamiya?
bro vergeta whats the ratio for 1500 surfacer when using it with thinner

The answer is yes. Use adhesion promotor. We have to in the collision industry on raw bumpers.
if you need primer for paint to adhere why does primer adhere to the plastic in the first place and not reg paint?
It doesnt. Not with out adhesion promotor. It sticks slightly better but not really sticking.
