if Siri is listening for key words, doesn't that mean she's listening to every word, and only responding to the key ones?

What freaks me out is I normaly speak english 99% and everything seems normal on my phone, but when I visit my parents and speak at my native language, my google browser changes everything to that language. Why? I didnt let it do that, didnt ask it to do it. It only changed only after I spoke around it.

Internet advertising of prescription-only medicines direct to the public is prohibited. So viagra ads will never show up on your feed no matter how many times you say it

  • @prdeshnaser5297
    @prdeshnaser5297 9 месяцев назад +102

Not quite. What we do is convert the audio to text. It is much simpler to process, store, and data mine. Also, we look for outliers, not the repetition. So, if you said viagra once, it would have been much more effective than repeating it so many times. Also, being male helps to increase the chance. Furthermore, we do not target individuals, we got an algorithm that chooses when to display which advertisement. We are not after you, we are after the profit. This way, you will never be sure whether a coincidence or not...

Once you’ve admitted companies are _already_ buying and selling data, there is no reasonable claim that “this” is “unnecessary”. They always want more info. One could argue they had “enough” info a while ago, but that hasn’t stopped them from finding more ways to get it,

2 weeks ago i was talking to a mate on whatsapp (texting) about 2 old movies movies i wanted to rewatch 'apocalypto' and 'blood in blood out" a few days later they were on my newsfeed and youtube front page, these movies are 20+ years old and they arent suuuuper popular or anything, and it happens waaaaaay tooo often for it to be a coincidence, maybe you can do a part 2 on what you think is happening

My friend once mentioned to his girlfriend not to forget to buy dry dog food that week. For the next two weeks the additional ads on websites and his phone were suggestions for dry dog food brand so I think the jury is still out on this. It could be that he has not made his settings on Alexa or Siri private enough

Love the video! One thing I'd add is that, if I were data mining audio, I could have had it transcribed on device and uploading the text instead to save bandwidth.

  • @iancurrie8844

I don’t believe this. I’ve had far too many things happen that are otherwise impossible. A conversation with a coworker on some strange topic THEY brought up and I’ve never heard or thought of before and - BAM - all over the ads.
Your rationalization by assuming the speech is encoded into audio and then send as an audio file is pretty silly. Obviously, it would put it as text, and even then just a list of a few words of interest, not entire transcripts.

Disappointing video. I don't use any voice assistant apps. Permissions to the mic are also turned off. I have android. The other day I did a charity race. I mentioned to my friend I didn't want to safety pin the bib to my jacket. Next day, I had an add on Facebook about a pin free way to attach a race bib to your shirt. Happens way too much like that. Oh and the Facebook ad was on my laptop. Not my phone. I don't have the FB app on my phone.

I don't know, because the amount of times I've said something and it's showed up on my phone is insane. examples:
    1. my mom once mentioned something about a sportsman wife and when she opened her phone to google it, as soon as she typed "m" the exact search came up.
    2. somebody once mentioned a medicine to me, and when I opened my phone there were ads of it EVERYWHERE.
    3. I once woke up in the middle of the night, and spoke to myself in my NATIVE language saying "I wonder what time it is" and Siri immediately responded even tho a)it's my native language and there are no settings related to it on my phone and b)I didn't use any "wake word" or say "hey Siri"
there are also more, but these are a few main ones

Another way to determine what kind of ad to serve someone is to record for how long they look at a certain ad.
Let's say I'm starting a new profile. I'd be sending them thousands of different kinds of ads every day. And then I'd add an algorithm to track how long they look at certain ads. The longer they look at a certain category of ads, the more ads from that category they'll receive. Simple as that. Every time you unlock your phone and do something, you have the potential of being tracked without ever having to record your audio.

Damn, this series has great production. Good job! Though I agree that maybe that's all there is to it, just very good prediction, lots ads, and some randomness, you can definitely not say for sure that they don't also listen sometimes and convert that audio to text on your phone. You can't know for sure unless you inspect the source code in your OS and analyze the traffic. Being 100% about this subject and ignoring the fact that audio can be converted to text is just condescending, even if you may indeed be right.

Hello and good day to you, question if big companies and big brother can track your data, movements, and collect private information from you how/ why is it farfetched to believe they could be listening to you through devices like your phone, smart TV, or even your car (depending on the age and accessories installed)?

Still doesn't make it feasible or practical. Do more research on how their algorithms work and you'll realize they do not need your microphone at all... There's a lot of psychology behind why people always think this too, like the frequency illusion. Alexa and Google Home may be a different story, but I can promise you that your PHONE is not listening to anything other than a wake word, nor does it need to.

Once you start learning more about human cognition and memory and how we attribute things, you'll find it very easy to believe that this is largely a set of false positives.
Our brains hallucinate patterns all the time and we cannot remember things that are not noteworthy - so all the events that contradict are forgotten because they don't confirm our biased view.
This is also a major part of prejudice and stereotypes. Heuristics are useful, but often lead us astray. It's good to be skeptical of what we think we see, and be open to the idea that our memories are flawed. It's scary for some, but otherwise you're just more vulnerable to it.

There is option for adaptative ads that match your profile. This would be an option to uncheck.
Other than that, I am not using Facebook or other social media, I have no assistant on my phone, I have 'speech to text's option off and all these ads options are switched off, only then I do not have these 'coincidences'. Oh, and I do not have tinfoil hat, I just loathe big tech and anyone who tells me what would be good for me and is salesman.

I think the most logical and sad explanation is the sheer number of ads, indeed. There's just ads everywhere, all the time, on every single media, on taxis, on buses, on trains, on the internet, EVERYWHERE.
Also they tend to predict our personal data pretty well, so it's easy for them to just target you very precisely and hit the right thing at the right moment, with the sheer number of ads they unleash. Imagine a very small target, but thousands and thousands of archers trying to hit it at the same time. Even if it's a small target, as long as they know approximately where to aim, they have a high chance to hit, one day or another. It's literally carpet bombing your attention with anything you may want or need.

Failed to mention the implanting of thoughts that lead to discussion and is reinforced by adds. Example, there could be a lot in the news and social media about Viagra that would lead to discussion about Viagra and would then be reinforced with advertising for Viagra. People do no realise the first step and think it starts at a discussion in a park and then goes directly to advertisements online via spying. Personally I would prefer my mobile to be listening as I can always switch it off to our thoughts and discussions being manipulated via multiple forms of media, social networking and in turn contacts. The key word here I guess is trends.
