  • Fr. Mike talks about the real reasons Christ tells us to fast. It isn’t just about strengthening our will and showing our love for God through some small sacrifice. Ultimately, it’s about freedom. When we give up something for Lent, by the time Lent is over we may find we never needed that thing in the first place and may never feel we need it again.
Fr. Mike’s talks are now available as podcasts, so you can listen to them on the road or wherever you go! You can find them at ascensionpresen....

So true, once I started fasting, and just little ways, God started opening my eyes more and more and more and setting me free from fear, anxiety, all of it. Also he opened my eyes to see the true church and I am being guided by him to join the catholic, the true church, and leave being a protestant 🙏

Why not Greek or Antiochene Orthodoxy ? Or the Assyrian Church of the East ? Or Syrian Orthodoxy ? All of them have as much claim to be the 'original church' -- and the Greek church probably has the greatest claim to that. They still use the language of the New Testament. And the Assyrian Church of the East still uses the language that Jesus himself spoke.

@@jeeolsen9993 fasting can be as short as one day and can be for as long as weeks. Don't go crazy over it. Many people think fasting is not eating anything at all. That's not really true. It's having ONE big meal and two tiny ones. Like tiny as long as they don't make you full. Also no meat at all aside from fish.

God invites us to walk with Him. It is through walking with Him that we walk away from sin and towards salvation. God does not ask you to resolve your issues on your own, on the contrary. He is trying to show you that when you're in sin it means you're still a toddler and you need His help to walk. Never let where you are today be an impediment to letting God into your life. He's knocking at your door because He just wants to hang out, to be with you. He meets you where you are. He doesn't care. Read Psalm 139 every time you feel like sin is getting between you and God. Remember always that it is God who heals and Satan who accuses. Remember that it is the snake that convinced Adam and Eve to hide when God comes looking for them in the garden of eden. Don't hide. He knows you and loves you as you are this very moment. His grace will heal the wounds that lead you to sin. No sin of yours is bigger than His heart. Please let the Shepherd bring you back into the fold, you will remain totally lost without Him, and it's not your duty to be your own shepherd. Rely on Him.

Heh, first time I've said my age online.
I'm gonna be 100% honest with whoever reads this.
I'm 10 years old. I'm fasting today actually for Nineveh Ninety.
I am eating only 3 meals a day which are Bread and Water.
This video helped me to fast with other things too!
I just decided what to do for Lent thanks to this video! It is a little late though..
I am on RUclips for a huge amount of time in my day.
What I'm giving up is RUclips that doesn't improve my faith in any way shape or form.
So what I can watch is Ascension Presents - The Vortex - The Download and other things like rosary videos for my daily rosary.
Thank you Fr. Mike for helping me with my faith every time I watch you!

I, too, have felt maybe I’m not doing enough or haven’t in the past. We can only live one day at a time and work with that. If you gave a child the job of collecting pencils and they want to get all the text books instead, that is not the task you gave them and you would’ve they rather just collect the pencils. Likewise, God may only require a smaller task for us at times and we need to satisfy ourselves with that. Someone else is to collect the text books. This is just an example to show something that has helped me and I hope it helps you. I’ve realized that my Will is not always God’s Will. I’m sure you are very pleasing to our Lord. God bless you!🙂

Put it this way, God made everything, God can do whatever He wants, if He is going to become man He gets to choose his own mother, wouldn't he choose the most amazing and special of all women? Also think of this, he went out of his plan for her, at the wedding of Canna, the people came to Mary and asked her to help them, she went to her son and interceeded for them and asked Jesus to help them, He answered that it was not his time yet, and she insisted, and He ended up making the best wine out of water, and all just because She asked him in behalf of the party people.

Hey man you're in my heart. I'll be praying for you! And maybe this doesn't apply to your case, but I have noticed that if you try to change something that has become deeply ingrained in habit, it's almost impossible to suddenly stop cold turkey. So don't feel discouraged. As long as you keep trying and taking small steps, you will get there! Just take the time to ask God for strength and entrust yourself to Him, and He's got your back.
Also, many of the saints did not start out with saint-like virtue. Virtue that strong is developed gradually over time, after falling and trying and trying again. So just keep looking forward.
Hope any of that helps. You're in my prayers!

"Fasting induces metabolic signaling that reduces your potential for diabetes, cardiovascular disease and some cancers.
Fasting reduces the amount of free radicals in your body and renews your immune system through the regulation of stem cell production.
Fasting triggers autophagy (mitophagy in the mitochondria), a process that cleans up damaged cells and reduces the inflammatory response."

As a Protestant on the fence, I confronted another Protestant and asked: "Why don't we fast? I tried it and it humbled and changed me for the better. I think we should do it too."
    "Because we don't have to."
    Agh...

We have to because Jesus told us to. We try to follow ALL not just some of the examples He set. We are to do that cos He said so. Not doing it is basically not doing what He said to..am talking to myself also aloud. So this answer popped into my head and thought to share

You might be referring to when Jesus said, “When you fast...”. Not “if you fast”. Matthew 6:16. So I believe the Holy Spirit was giving you promptings. Thank you for sharing that! 🙂

The whole point of chopsticks is because it's considered barbaric to cut your own food on your plate. Culturally, chopsticks are used to grab bite sized pieces of meat, veggies, etc., or slurping up noodles. So using a knife kinda negates the whole point. Americans are ok with cutting up a steak on their plate and that's fine, but you should embrace the culture you're borrowing from if you're going to borrow. Understand what you're doing before you pick a tool for the job. Chopsticks are just the tool. Funny enough, chopsticks are not used for sushi in Japan but you will always get them at a sushi place in the States and here in South Africa 🤣 In Japan, we use two perfectly good fingers to grab a piece of sushi and dip it in whatever soy sauce

Orthodox fasting is tough, at least the Romanian one. Complete veganism for 40 days, and none of the fancy workarounds - vegetables only, fried in plain vegetable oil (olive oil only on the weekends) or raw or boiled. First two days are a total fast, with just a bit of bread and salt after sundown. Wine only in the weekends. All meals should be once a day if possible, and in moderation. Plus prayer, confession, good works and more prayer.

Pray for me. I’ve failed this Lent due to being sidetracked by our 45 year old son losing his job and living at our home. He’s become complacent and isn’t looking for full time work. I hope we don’t have to legally have him removed from our home. He once lived on the street so we are very concerned about what to do. He simply can’t lay around in a room in our home contributing nothing. Sacred Heart of Jesus I surrender this to you.

    MEATLESS FRIDAY 🚫
All the Fridays of the year remain mandatory days of abstinence from meat. All Catholics aged 14 or older must abstain from meat on this day. Meat is considered to be the flesh and organs of mammals and fowl. Also forbidden are soups or gravies made from them. Salt and freshwater species of fish, amphibians, reptiles and shellfish are permitted.

For those wondering, he comes close to quoting Galatians 5:1, [it is] "for freedom that Christ has set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery." Also verse 13, the first part, is relevant: "for you were called to freedom, brothers." St. Paul is talking in this whole passage about slavery to the "flesh" or our fallen nature, as well as slavery to the old laws/practices that Jesus did away with, e.g., circumcision. The point of our freedom is to receive and manifest the fruits of the (Holy) Spirit, listed in verses 22&23.
Fr. Mike's suggestion for doing a "keystone penance" sounds good to me. But here is some Biblical basis for it, which may help those who, like me, weren't quite sure what he was talking about on the first listen.
