  • Fixing Network Latency and Reducing Bufferbloat (WANT MORE WINS!?) / Hey guys. I imagine you're on this never ending crusade to reduce lag or fix lag either on your PC or on your network right? How do you get a more consistent game play experience?
    Many network companies still use old algorithms such as CODEL from the 2000s on today's routers. That might help with your upload and download speeds but when it comes to gaming, not a lot of data is used.
    You may be able to get around this but for some - there's still a problem. But wait, have you ever heard of OpenWRT? I will discuss this briefly and how I use better network algorithm called cake.
    Want to know more? Watch the ENTIRE video! :)
    *If you decide to update to OpenWRT it is done at your own risk*

    This is truly awesome content. Thank you! And I got some quick questions for you, if you don’t mind. Okay so, what are the best routers to flash, say top 3? Also would you say you need a desktop computer to get these type of optimal results? Lastly, can you post some videos in depth on how you flash your hardware? Thanks again

    • @capplanetfresh3687
      @capplanetfresh3687 4 года назад +1

      The reason I asked if I needed a desktop is because I’m a console gamer 🎮 however, I want those great results. Or at least close to it

    • @Davefinito

      Thank you so much!
      To flash OpenWRT, the Linksys WRT3200ACM works really well. I actually bought it to flash OpenWRT as it was compatible. As for others, I know other routers have the capability but done don’t. I use the OpenWRT forum and look at the routers to make a decision. Some routers aren’t compatible and could get bricked.
      I posted a video how to turn a pc into an OpenWRT router. Just need 2 gigabit ports that are compatible.
      Results I shared were on desktop but would be the same with console. It’s how the traffic is handled and prioritized on the router to minimize jitter.

      TheDaveStuff Of course, I’m just giving credit where credit is due! But okay I see, I’m probably gonna invest into the WRT. I’m just gonna make sure I can get the router properly Flashed first. If I can get that under control, then everything should be good. But thank you for the very useful information

    Would you rather lower your broadband speed in exchange for lower network lag or would you prefer more download and upload?

    • @smwfreak1647
      @smwfreak1647 4 года назад +2

      for some programs i would lower how much speed it gets to use but to be honest in general i rather more download and upload speeds :)

    • @Davefinito
      @Davefinito  4 года назад +5

      I think there’s a major opportunity missed by the network router companies. Using old algorithms doesn’t help today. I can say for gaming but it also applies to any app or service. I’d be willing to have a bit of telemetry on my router IF they intend to make a substantial change. Maybe even pay $2.99/ month if they can really make it amazing. I value my time and will pay a cup of coffee a month. 🙂
      People focus on input lag reduction on their PC. But for online stuff, the routers need to be better optimized. If routers can’t manage traffic properly, forget any sort of input lag adjustments or tweaks. Milliseconds today make a difference.

Is that generally good enough? Or do I need to go through all of this craziness to try to lower it to an A+?

    Hello, thank you for your videos. I have problem: I setting my PC how you advice, but in LatencyMon i have Highest Interrupt about 50-100.

    P.S. Sorry for my bad english.

    • @Davefinito
      @Davefinito  4 года назад

      Hey. 50-100 may be fine depending on what’s running. Do you happen to know what app is the highest?
      If your power plan is set to balanced, you can change it to high performance.
      The second tab in Latency mon can give more specifics on running processes and averages. That might help you isolate what the app or service could be.

    • @OkiniriAim
      @OkiniriAim 4 года назад +1

      @@Davefinito Thanks for answer. Highest app is nvddmkm.exe, dxgkrnl.sys, ntoskrnl.exe (I don't know how it disable). Power Plan is High Performance with Quick CPU.
      I remember you have same problem on twitch one week ago.

    • @Davefinito
      @Davefinito  4 года назад

      Yeah, I had an issue last week with nvlddmkm.sys. Part of it was caused by ntoskrnl.exe. To address the issue, I disabled C-states and set the idle load to typical. The trade off was increase the average DPC from 0.98 to 1.4 microseconds. But it brought down both nvlddmkm.sys execution times from .8-1.3 milliseconds down to 0.018-0.05 average. So power savings was the cause.
      You may want to look into that. The only Cstate that ideally should be on is C0.
      Other things to look at are in power settings is to disable USB3 suspend timers. You can also disable power management / power savings of your USB and network card devices from device manager.

    • @OkiniriAim
      @OkiniriAim 4 года назад

      @@Davefinito I'm sorry if I disturb you. I disable C-states in BIOS and power management in device manager and results every time different: in Frirst time: 20, in second and third: about 120, in fourth time again 20. Highest app nvlddmkm.sys and ndis.sys.

    • @Davefinito
      @Davefinito  4 года назад

      From time to time these drivers maybe use a little more execution time. If you check the second tab, it’ll display the average and highest execution times. If it doesn’t happen much, not a big deal.
      The important thing to realize here is after you make a change try it in the app or game. Don’t get too hung up over a metric. It’s 0.02-0.12 milliseconds (20 micro seconds to 120 micro seconds). Reaction times are easier to adjust in comparison.

      Checking that list - Only version 4 is capable of running OpenWRT. Versions 1-3 and 5 and 6 all have warnings stating not recommended. Take a look on the site and review recovery options, and go to the forum and ask if necessary.

    It's truly sad that Windows cannot handle network queue management and avoid bufferbloat by itself. Getting something like EdgeRouter X will fix the problem by purchasing yet another network device running Linux with the only task of implementing sensible queue management. If you have a network full of Linux computers and just set default congestion control algorithm to CDG and use the (default!) fq-codel queue management, you'll find that you don't have bufferbloat even without any central router with active queue management.
