Proper carp fishing! Beautiful fish. Sad news this morning about the passing of John Wilson. I loved the way that he could enthuse about a beautiful 2 pound crucian, just as much as he did about this 31 pound mirror carp. A man who understood that all fish species and their different habitats are important.

This man was an absolute legend. Grew up watching him. My brother and I religiously watched his programme. We still go fishing together some 25plus years on and remember his shows and joke about them. Lots of love to the man.

To any boy who's dad wasn't an angler John was a pretty good substitute, when I watched his great catches and promptly spent a fortune and managed to catch a gudgeon, it never stopped me or dampened my ambition, what a gift to be paid for enjoying yourself.

The green rimmed hoop net he used was a lb and 3 quarter's so he used to say, I don't for a minute doubt him, but I think more precise weighing done with a purpose made sling has a centralised weighing ring so is more reliable as its supporting the weight properly, but for himself an approx or close enough is fine. I absolutely loved the guy, and its through watching his shows as a kid that I served a long, atleast 10+ yrs river fishing apprenticeship before I eventually went on to specimen carp angling.

Yes John Wilson brilliant love his programs and same watched this guy for years. I've enjoyed fishing literally for at least 30 years and couldn't get enough of this guy. And as comments above funny with net thing wet net a pound lol I'm sure they more like 3 pound ha ha he has caught some beautiful fish. The ones I like is the pike on the norfolk broads. As a regular its nice to know that their is big pike would love to catch one similar to what he caught. Even the bream in one of his videos I was like wow weighing something like 13 pound wow a bream all double figures. Brilliant rest in peace Mr Wilson will keep watching your content for years to come.

In my experience, 30lb carp are the perfect size. I've caught 11 fish over 40lbs, and they can be quite lethargic. Kind of like winding in a sandbag. 30lbers are big strong and heavy, but still very energetic and fight hard. I am by no means a professional but that is my personal opinion from experience
