This is exactly what I needed. I really like i3status for its simplicity but I really wanted more sometimes, but didn't want to bother with something like Polybar. This is a great compromise.
I literally use my own bash script that spits out json to i3bar, works well enough. Even added mouse support to it. It's an easy enough format, well documented in the i3 faq.
And I just set up i3status. Well I want my weather widget/module that I'm already used to from Gnome, and I will have it. i3blocks seems a clear winner for customization. At least for my needs.
I also stick to i3blocks but I wish making popup applets was easier to do. For example, displaying a small window popup with a calendar, volume mixer/sliders, etc.
I think openweathermap api would be easier to use, it even tells you their filename for the current weather icon so that you can map it to yours (or use theirs)
Beware many the scripts are quite slow, especially if /bin/sh is bash. perf stat /usr/lib/i3blocks/volume 87% Performance counter stats for '/usr/lib/i3blocks/volume': 31.384223 task-clock:u (msec) # 1.399 CPUs utilized 0 context-switches:u # 0.000 K/sec 0 cpu-migrations:u # 0.000 K/sec 2,652 page-faults:u # 0.085 M/sec 42,611,179 cycles:u # 1.358 GHz 58,352,921 instructions:u # 1.37 insn per cycle 13,214,999 branches:u # 421.071 M/sec 387,319 branch-misses:u # 2.93% of all branches 0.022427480 seconds time elapsed You probably do not want 1 sec intervals for something like volume and should instead use signals and if you change you volume via keyboard shortcut send the signal to i3blocks.
How would I write an i3block script where it checks if Selinux is in enforcing or permissive mode and that it will display which mode it is in on the status bar?
i use similar external modules with polybar to monitor cryptocurrency :p have a single script to fetch complete exchange data every 2 mins using a cron job :D Btw polybar allows everything i3 block allows i.e. to execute different scripts on different actions
you should really buy the ergonomic kinesis advantage LF keyboard.. i remapped my keys and arrows, once remapped its totally awesome.. i could tell you what i mapped where and why since i think i made the best mapping.. once mapped... it's totally the best keyboard ever.. no other keyboard can even touch it ... i would rate it 10\10 once mapped.. while other keyboard 2-4/10 max
hey man ! love the videos! I just got a x220 and I have i3 running on it but suddently the sound is all messed up.. sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt.. can someone share the i3config for the sound buttons (mute + -) ? I tried a lot of diferent ones bue the problem pressists.. cheers !
When you run linux you don't need games. All of one's time is spent configuring/reconfiguring settings.
knpstrr this is pretty accurate lol
And conifguring your games to work
cant tell if you are a gentooman or gaymer so i don't know whether to tell you to go back to /g/ or /v/
So true
more like do settings once and never need to again
Using your keyboard on your legs like a chad

Have the same wallpaper man...freaked me out at first lol - thanks for this video! Good stuff.
You need an abbreviation or something for the phrase "I've been looking for something more minimalist" think of all the time your wasting?
KISS
I need to KISS.
Wow, Infected Mushroom :) Nice videos, man!

>Low is 71 degrees
Use Celsius or Python is only language
He said he prefers farenheit because it's more intuituve for him.
klblaz muh Kelvin is the way
Personally I go for the average speed of particles.
Roman Riesen but then that would be like, zero for something like a stationary cpu?
I also stick to i3blocks but I wish making popup applets was easier to do. For example, displaying a small window popup with a calendar, volume mixer/sliders, etc.
What about nm-applet and other tray icons?
I think openweathermap api would be easier to use, it even tells you their filename for the current weather icon so that you can map it to yours (or use theirs)
i use lemonbar because it allows for fancy powerline fonts and also relies on shell scripts.
Thank you for the video!
Seems like the icons depend on the font itself. The script file's icons look better than the block icons themselves.
man i really want to find this background but the luke smith wallpapers repo is gone
thanks for sharing, mate

I observed in my LARBS installation that the terminal cursor moves a lot faster than normal. How is this possible?
How would I write an i3block script where it checks if Selinux is in enforcing or permissive mode and that it will display which mode it is in on the status bar?
can you put your scripts in github?
What program were you using for the CLI audio mixer? Looked interesting
ncpamixer
Luke Smith Danke!
How'd you get colored glyph icons to show?
A font. Joypixels or similar is what I use
I just need the right hand part of the gnome status bar :)
Do you know your website is offline? A namecheap holding page showing just now....
what are these terminal window panes?
Is i3-blocks actually faster than polybar?
Yes it is
What keyboard is he using?
TFW when started falling for minimalism meme
I need a bar that is written in C
how do you zoom like in 2:12?
Nice video!
Can you please share the wall paper?
May we have your i3blocks config files plz.
Hi, What is your Terminal name? Thanks in advance
nice video i have seen it

Mandy Gill care to share the scripts? It sounds awesome!

Nice video. How to play with colors in a i3blocks' script (not in i3blocks.conf)?
Why not lemonbar?
That probably uses battery af.
I just wrote a C program to feed what I want as input to i3bar.
I believe lemonbar is the lightest bar there is, it's written in C as well
I wish I was autistic enough to run i3-gaps on my main computer. Looks very comfy.
> not using awesome font for icons.

Good music is good
window managers are so freaking redundant lmao

Are you using Pulseaudio or just ALSA?
pulseaudio :) thanks for the reply

bindsym XF86AudioMute exec --no-startup-id pactl set-sink-mute 0 toggle # mute sound
im using i3 on ubuntu.. not on the arch team yet.. can that be a problem?
I never understood why people need to know the weather report
It's one of those things like "why do people climb mount Everest".
Luke Smith is it tho?
To lazy to get up and open the blinds.
it's so you can tell Cleverbot "nice weather huh?"
squiggofant and put your grasses on.
Luke listens to animal collective
You should try lemonbar
i3roblocks
infected mushroom. . .
Nice.. wttrn.in automatically thinks I'm in Oymyakon, Russia.. Pretty sure I was somewhere else.
bumblebee bar somebody?
Yes. Bumblebee + Font Awesome
I don't like bumblebee, it's written in python. It tends to use too much of cpu for my taste.
