    I always carry a small fire kit with a fero rod, waterproof matches, Bic lighter and a decent tinder source. One thing that makes any emergency suck more is freezing. Always fun to see what other people carry. Thanks

      @HikeOregon  3 года назад

      My fat wood (tinder source) is in another place in my pack but I guess that and the paracord should have been added to the first aid kit video.

      @@HikeOregon fun fact: if your Bic runs out shaving the side of the lighter and then slowly grinding the striker wheel across ferro igniter upside down sprinkling the grindings on the plastic. Then strike a spark into the pile.

    This is very helpful! I wanted to mention I noticed another RUclipsr dips cotton balls in Vaseline and stores in an altoids tin or ziplock bag. Much easier firestarter than flint since you said you pack a lighter.

      I actually had fat wood in my pack that I use for emergency fire starting situations👍🏼

    Due to the amount of solo hiking I do in remote areas, I carry a satellite communicator now. You’d hate to get snake bit 20 miles in the backcountry with no signal… The prescription strength ibuprofen is a little better. It’s helped me when the IT band flares up… I’ve always found the fire starters to be fairly useless. Better to carry a lighter and a fire starting stick which can be broken up for multiple fires. Ends up being less weight to carry and works much better.

      I have an InReach as well as a lighter and fat wood as well👍🏼👍🏼

      @@HikeOregon You’ve put together a really good kit! Oh, since you’re in rainy country, one thing that saved me years ago on a multi day backpacking trip across Isle Royale when the rain never stopped was a garbage bag. Eventually, everything got soaked and we wore the trash bags under our shirts to hold off hypothermia. They’re kind of like cord, it’s an all around survival tool.

    • @HikeOregon

      That’s a great idea!!!

    I have a mini wrap in my first aid. It came in a kit that included an elastic brace. I keep a couple of those braces in my larger kit in the car. When rolled up the wrap is only an inch in diameter and about two inches long. It’s not medical grade but it can do in a pinch for a lot of purposes. If I needed something larger, like you said, a shirt sleeve can be cut with the knife and that wrap could be used to secure it. I keep a couple safety pins in the sewing kit as well.

    • @HikeOregon
      @HikeOregon  3 года назад

      Safety pins is a great thing to add. Thank you for recommending that.

    As always great video, I need to add the cord and emergency blanket, also like the filter straw, haven't seen that one before, like it. As you mentioned, a roll of self adhesive athletic tape is handy, I carry it in case my dog cuts a pad on her foot. I also have a single use non-stinging BZK antiseptic towelette to clean a wound, again dog related. And I finally precut some leukotape squares and put them on an old stamp sheet. Thanks for sharing your tips, love your channel!

    Great video!
    I recently found your videos. I have been into survival and primitive skills for a while. I am just looking into getting into distance hiking and have really enjoyed your vids. That’s a pretty decent basic emergency kit. Remember that it won’t do any good in the bottom of your pack. I would recommend buying an inexpensive fixed blade instead of that folder. Inexpensive not cheap.
    Cabela’s in Springfield has Mora knives. They’re cheap, but super robust and easy to sharpen. They’re also really light.

    I have about the same but I also have allergy stuff like eye drops, claritin and flonase. I've been on hikes where something super aggravated my hayfever which swells my eyes. Oh and an inhaler but thats more specific because of having asthma.

    Great video! Too many go hiking for a day-trip or a few days, and they leave-out the First Aid. "Oh. I have nothing to worry about." My kit, is basically the same with the added epinephrine kit, and some trauma bandages for deep cuts. The day I go without the first aid kit, will be the day I need it. Of course, carry your prescription pills. And be aware that each state has different rules for prescription pain opioids(especially National Parks).

    • @HikeOregon
      @HikeOregon  3 года назад

      I had no idea that there are rules about prescription opioids in national parks. How would anyone know that you are carrying them?

  • @johnpeterson212
    @johnpeterson212 3 года назад +1

    Great video. I would add tweezers to the kit. Ibuprofen is a good analgesic, but I would carry 800 mg tablets (prescription). Although not exactly first aid gear I would add a whistle to my kit (perhaps you have one elsewhere). When I hike anywhere around rattlesnakes I carry a Sawyer extractor. In NM I came within inches of being bitten on the lower leg.

    Emergency ponchos are also always nice to have. They’re saved me from the rain a few times.
    My FAK is larger, but not by much. Nowadays I buy the items I need individually either from places like the dollar tree or rei for some of the harder to find items.
    Another good tip for FAKs is to go through them a few times a year to remove and replace any expired meds or damaged items.
    I also tend to have a FAK for each backpack I use which includes my 2 hiking backpacks, the backpacking backpack, and my work backpack. The car and kayak also have their own dedicated FAK. I find having one for each keeps me from forgetting to take them on my outings. HH

      Oh yes, I definitely carry a rain jacket with me at all times. You have to here in Oregon. My first aid kit for backpacking looks much different than this one though because I’m already carrying things like a tent and sleeping bag and extra food.

    Might not be necessary in a day hike pack, but I like to have a small bottle of hydrogen peroxide with me. Then again, I always hike with dogs and carry more "stuff" than if I were to go on my own.

      Steristrips for wound closure, large gauze pad or roll. Tweezers.
      A bic lighter is simpler than messing with matches, etc. Still works when wet.
