Your interpretation is really spot on! From what I remember, it’s about a dead soldier who goes to Hell. Really love your vibe, excited for your Epica journey! :)
Welcome to EPICA. Dutch symphonic metal band formed as Sahara Dust in 2002 by guitarist Mark Jansen after parting ways with his former band After Forever. Mark had co founded AF, which was Floor's first band she joined at age 16. (Mark and Floor are not related) They renamed the band after the 2003 Kamelot album. Simone was 17 in 2002, she had been studying pop singing, but switched to this style after hearing Tarja with Nightwish. Coen (rhythms with moon) Janssen on keyboards is the other original member. The rest of the current lineup, seen here, has been constant since 2012. Isaac Delahaye on lead guitar, bassist Rob van der Loo, and drummer Arien van Weesenbeek (The Beast). 8 albums and several EP's to date, album #9 is in the works. This concert is the Retrospect 10th anniversary show, that's why the full orchestra and choir. A 3 hour ,24 song concert, Sancta terra was over 2 hours into it, and Simone was about 3 months pregnant here. This song ,from the 2007 3rd album The Divine Conspiracy, is not typical of most of their catalog as Mark adds some harsh vocals to a lot of their songs. Yes someone died, and went to hell. It's about a su!c!de bomber who thinks he went to heaven, finds out he actually went to hell, and decides he likes it there. As you see ,they are awesome live. Check out "Consign To Oblivion" and "Beyond the Matrix" live at the Zenith in Paris. "Design Your Universe" from this same Retrospect show. "The Skeleton Key' and "Kingdom of Heaven part 3" from the Omega Alive virtual show 2021. And "Code of Life" live in Amsterdam 2023 at AFAS Live.
@@VocalCitizen mark has a master's degree in psychology, which is reflected in his texts. He and Simone mainly write the lyrics while the rest of the band is responsible for the music. The keyboardist also makes the arrangements for the orchestra
Two of the best Dutch female vocalists alive; Simone Simons (Epica), and Floor Jansen (Nightwish), combining their forces. These two are besties right from when they've met eachother at the in 1999 founded 'Rock-academy' in a town called Tilburg, the Netherlands.
@@VocalCitizen If you truly go down the rabbit hole on Epica, There are some discoveries you make that are all too often hidden because of the commercial popularity of Nightwish that clouds good clarity. Because Epica is often much heavier and often darker in their immense talent they aren’t quite as digestible for many. Also Do you have yet to see the full breath of Simone and if you want a couple suggestions on songs that show this more spectacularly from her I will be glad to make the suggestions. Also a symphonic band I recommend you check out is Therion….like Epica, they BRING it with various incredible rotating female front vocalists. Also for probably the best symphonic female vocalist on the planet that I am aware of in my 64 years and doing symphonic metal following for many years now is Diane Von Giersbergen . Have you heard of her? Wow!!
This performance is with two of the three metal goddesses. The third is Anneke van Giersbergen. The only are together two together at le most because all together would be overwhelming! Great reaction!🤘🎸
Welcome to my favorite band. This is the same song that introduce me to them. Epica is much darker than Nightwish and just as spectacular. To see what they are really about, listen to Design Your Universe from this concert. For a newer performance, listen to music from the AFAS concert
Great to see you picked up Epica! Also remember that Simone Simons has a solo album coming out in a few days. I recommend checking out two of the songs that have already been released with music videos: * Aeterna * In Love We Rust This is in fact a collab with Arjen of Ayreon fame.
This was from their 10th anniversary show from 2013, Retrospect. A 3 hour show with full orchestra and choir. The entire show was mesmerizing. I recommend Chasing the Dragon as a good follow up, Simone at her best.

@VocalCitizen I concur with both suggestions. Rivers at AFAS is beautiful with Simone with the band and the cellos of Apocalyptica, and Sabat Mater Dolorosa is from the same concert 10th Anniversary concert, but is a classical piece in Latin, sung only by Simone and Floor with just the Orchestra backing them. In the duet, Floor sings the lower alto part. It is beautiful and the metal concert audience is silent... in awe.

No disrespect but when Epica is featured and puts floor with an orchestra as well Simone which Nightwish never does, can we just focus on Epica here for once? Floor only wishes she had the absolute perfect pitch that Simone possesses
Honestly thank god they are not Nightwish!!! The two are incomparable. Epica as a band are far superior than Nightwish for me. Epica operates in a league all of their own. Especially in terms of composition Epica is on another level entirely than any other band in the symphonic met genre. What also is amazing is that Epica are actually still getting better each album. The opposite is true for Nightwish unfortunately... Fact is that Epica is both more 'metal' and more 'symphonic' than Nightwish.
Meh....this is like the 5th or 6th time I've tried Nightwish and/or EPICA songs, and still nothin'. Don't get it twisted, I have mad respect for these two bands and their powerful front women, they deserve all the love and accolades they obviously get from their loving, loyal and massive fan bases. I really really wanted to like them, but the whole rock opera-esc thing just doesn't tickle my fancy. It's nothing I'd tell someone to turn off either, I'd be fine with it at a social gathering or a friend listening to it in the car, just doesn't personally get my motor running, enjoyed your reaction though, as usual, great job!!
I appreciate and respect honesty. I've done reactions to music I didn't like. I'm straight about it... "Intruder Alert" by Lupe Fiasco was awful... I said so in the reaction. I mean, you couldn't miss the irritation on my face during the "hook". "Republican" by Token is another. Not a lot of 👍🏻s on those videos. 😆 I always try to find something positive to say, but if I don't like it or am "MEH" about the tune, I friggin' say so. Life's too damned short.
@@VocalCitizen ... That shows how real you are, kuddos, I've often gone to the comment section of a negative reaction, to be a voice among all the hate the reactor is getting and say hey, I appreciate your honesty, nobody can like everything. As long the reactor is respectful with their disliking the song, I applaud them for it.
I would listen to Floor, Simone, the orchestra, and the choir again at any time. Unfortunately, despite Simone, the band Epica is not to my taste at all.
@@VocalCitizen You will find out that there is some Radar Love, maybe looking for Venus. And in a Little Green Bag you can find some Hocus Pocus because there is a House For Sale. enjoy.
Happily and permanently so. I did the married thing (we're still great friends). I made a person with him. I raised that person and she's fabulous. I'm done. Besides, no man can handle me. I talk WAAAAYYY too much. I'm not into doling out torture. 😉
now, some other bands to look into; Jinjer, Amaranthe, Lacuna Coil, Battle Beast, Dragonforce, Wintersun, Arch Enemy, Kamelot, Imperial Age, Unleash the Archers, Suite Clarity, Lords of the Trident, Shield of Wings, Liliac..........
He's not wrong with this list, but to narrow it a little for you: Lacuna Coil (Goth Metal, Italy) and Unleash The Archers (Power Metal, Canada) are my suggestions here. I know you like soaring female vocalists. You will get that in spades with Brittany Slayes (Hayes) of the Archers and Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil. As for specific songs to start with: Swamped by Lacuna Coil, and Awakening studio play through with the Archers.
Your interpretation is really spot on! From what I remember, it’s about a dead soldier who goes to Hell. Really love your vibe, excited for your Epica journey! :)

I respect candor. Thank you for watching... 🫠
Can't be much, if it ain't Dutch. ;-)
🤣
@@VocalCitizen You will find out that there is some Radar Love, maybe looking for Venus.
And in a Little Green Bag you can find some Hocus Pocus because there is a House For Sale. enjoy.
Are you single?
Happily and permanently so. I did the married thing (we're still great friends). I made a person with him. I raised that person and she's fabulous. I'm done. Besides, no man can handle me. I talk WAAAAYYY too much. I'm not into doling out torture. 😉
@@VocalCitizen perfect ill take you when can i pick you up
now, some other bands to look into; Jinjer, Amaranthe, Lacuna Coil, Battle Beast, Dragonforce, Wintersun, Arch Enemy, Kamelot, Imperial Age, Unleash the Archers, Suite Clarity, Lords of the Trident, Shield of Wings, Liliac..........
LOL I am but one human.
Noted...
@@VocalCitizen And don't forget Blind Guardian!
you already noticed their singer Hansi Kürsch in "The Day That The World Breaks Down".
