If you stack high and heavy, you will definitely want your skis to be spaced a little wider than the sled. This is coming from someone that built a smitty ski box lifted 10" high ,over 20 years ago.
you have no idea how much easier it is to pull by hand in deep snow. i’m making myself one in a few hours after menards opens up to head out for an evening bite on a lake with deep snow. you cannot pull my big otter lodge by hand fully loaded in deep snow unless it was on a smitty sled which i’ll be making today. great video.
for those that choose to use wood. Try using cedar , it's much lighter and moister won't effect the wood . I've had cedar blocks on my original ski box for about 23 years .

It is cool. But skis for a sled?
Behind an ATV or snowmobile no need but when by hand through snow the skis make it much easier if there’s much of a load.
