Ippei Mizuhara, the former translator for Shohei Ohtani who was fired late last month amid allegations he stole millions of dollars from the baseball star’s bank account to cover debts that Mizuhara owed to an illegal bookmaker, is in negotiations to plead guilty to federal crimes in connection with the purported theft, according to three people briefed on the matter.
Original reporting:

www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/3...
The investigation, which began about three weeks ago after news of the alleged theft broke while Ohtani’s team, the Los Angeles Dodgers, was opening its season with two games in South Korea, is rapidly nearing a conclusion, according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the inquiry is continuing.
A guilty plea from Mizuhara before a federal judge - likely to include an admission of a range of facts related to any illegal conduct - could confirm the account that Ohtani gave to reporters two weeks ago, in which he said he had no knowledge of what happened to the money.

Sports journalists act like this type of fraud is unheard of, when it happens every day to individuals and businesses of all sizes.
The DoJ and IRS don't f#ck around. Those of you still questioning Ohtani should be ashamed.
You’re the first baseball journalist/pundit to say you feel bad for Ohtani with everyone pointing fingers at him.
For that I respect your honesty and professionalism. Can’t imagine how Shohei felt with everyone accusing him of wrongdoing. He is human too just like any of us.
Exactly
so you are saying he is a not a thinking person.
If anything, this is a reminder that there are more people in the world who want to see someone crumble and fall rather than support them. Honestly sad 😞
Human nature, always disappoint
As someone who grew up around addiction, this story is plausible. Addicts will go to any lengths imaginable, legal or otherwise, to fuel their addictions. Stealing from trusting people, lying, and doing it on a grand scale are normal.
The only thing I would say on this is that Ippei likely went to an underground bookie specifically because a lot of the legal gambling methods are heavily investing into mitigation technologies (limiting the time that one can gamble during a session, lockboxes, having slot techs such as Brantley aka Cowboy Slots speak at casinos to gamblers, etc.) Again, this is where going outside of the law is to be expected. No casino ANYWHERE would have allowed Ippei to do what he did, and most of them are owned by chains now (e.g. Harrah's) so they're in constant contact.
Do you not realize Ippei is the one he trusted to set up these accounts to begin with? And that Ippei had access then disabled the notifications? Do you not realize that Shohei does not read English to decipher a notification if he did get one so in the instance the Bank had called to verify with Shohei Ippei impersonated Shohei which was on multiple recorded bank conversations. If you can’t read the language you can’t be responsible for doing anything if the person you’ve entrusted to look after those things is the one betraying you. How is that irresponsible in the least? Shohei is a TOTAL victim of a crime. And that’s it.
Shohei total victim? No he’s not. The interpreter is under his employ. He is, to a certain extent, responsible for his actions. That’s not how life works. If you hire a someone and they misbehave or make a mistake, you’re their manager, you MUST take accountability because it’s part of your job to manage them. You put them in a position of to do a job you must make sure they do that job. There’s plenty of fault to go around.
Also, do you honestly believe Ohtani had no idea that his MILLIONS was being mismanaged like this? Nonsense. There’s no way you don’t notice wealth being so callously thrown away like this. This has all the hallmarks of power people and Ohtanis’s entourage moving around him and doing PR to protect him.
At best he was irresponsible and that is putting it kindly.
@@Lazyworker123 Read the 36 page criminal complaint. Ohtani never accessed his account. Ippei controlled ALL communication with Ohtani. Even his agent, financial adviser and accountant could not get access because of Ippei. As far as Ohtani knew, he trusted Ippei with the job he was doing as his interpreter not know what was really going on. The Feds make it clear in the complaint how much Ippei controlled everything.
@@Lazyworker123 You are dead wrong about Ippei being under Ohtani’s employ. The Dodgers were Ippei’s employer and the Angels were his employer when Ohtani was playing for the Angels. In MLB, when a player doesn’t speak English and meeds an interpreter, it is the team who employs the interpreter and the requirement for the team to employ and pay an interpreter is in the player’s contract. If you recall, when this whole episode blew up, all the reports stated that the Dodgers fired Ippei.
Haven’t you ever heard about rich celebrities and athletes had their money embezzled by their family or close friend? It happens all the time. Why is it so difficult to get your head around Shohei’s case even after the Fed investigators filed the 36 page documents detailing the crime? I’m sure you have tens of millions in your bank account like Shohei and would notice when a few millions gone missing as you seem to know about ‘the hall mark of powerful people’ so well. 😂
@@timturnbaughlet’s accept the premise that you read the 36 page document. Let’s accept that everything you said there was true. Do you not think that the man should have oversight over the person essentially running such a crucial part of his life?
He must have lost it betting on the A’s
This is an honest take and I respect the empathy for ohtani as a human through all of this news despite the fact that he will be just fine financially and otherwise. Also respect the lesson take for sure Props from a Dodgers fan
FBI doesn’t lie, if they do then there goes all the trust
The FBI does not lie? wow you are very naive. I bet you you think CNN is valid news too.
$142MM in wins and $182MM in losses. Wow! I simply have no desire to gamble.
That's a 0.78 win rate. Which is better than any MLB team! 😵💫
@@r2-3d That is a .415 win rate. He isn't even playing .500 ball.
@mateoneedham6807 Damn my crappy maths! Yeah, you're right😅
Maybe ippei got the yen vs dollars conversion mixed up 😂
I thought that once you got rich you never had to worry about money
When did he have time to do his job?
How dod Ohtani not know his bank account was being drained?
Just read the indictment
How could Ippi have kept it together enough with that situation hanging over his head. My paltry debt to my credit card 💳💳 s can cause me discomfort from time to time and how can Shohai play at a high level unless he doesn't have any involvement 🤷🏻♂️ unless he knows that Ippi will fall on his sword 🗡️ for him 🤷🏻♂️ it's all very disturbing. Gambling is out of control in this country. ijs imo
bro knew he sucked at sports betting but kept doing it anyways >.>
but he at least had the one braincell that said "dont bet on baseball"
if only the feds moved this fast with a certain ex-president's financials
Just lucky Ippei (Shohei) did not get involved with a Japanese gang. Shoehei's wife needs to be involved going forward.
Money Ball 2
Ippei is an evil conman. 😈
For real. Evil
Ohtani doesn't strike me as stupid, it's odd he would entrust his interpreter so much he would give him access to his bank account. He needs some financial advisors that speak his language, that only Ohtani has access to....the funny thing? Manfred wants the A's in Vegas!
Ippei is taking the shit for ohrani
READ the indictment
Read the 37 page document! What the hell are you reporting? This shows how little you know.
Uh, where do you think those excerpts came from?
I totally agree with you Brodie.
Why did they let him do that interview knowing his story was Ohtani paid his gambling debts? That part still doesn’t make sense.
Ippei made that story up
Ippei lied to all of them. The agent didn't know all the details of what was really going on. They trusted Ippei too because Ohtani did.
Who said they let him do that interview? The interview was over the phone because Ippei was with the Dodgers in Korea. The ESPN reporter called Ippei’s cell and did the interview over the phone. There was mo advance notice to the team or Ohtani’s agent or attorneys that Ippei was going to be interviewed about gambling. When Ippei took the call for the interview he didn’t even know what the reporter was going to interview him about, which is usually how reporters handle interviews about controversial issues in order to put the person being interviewed on the dpot so they don’t have opportunity to come up with a cover story. opportunity to
I guess it was because it was in the heat of the moment. That story was made up right after the south korea game when they had a team meeting and Ippei had to address the issue right away.
They were gay lovers.
Shady AF. Over three years averaging 25 bets A DAY and $16 MILLION missing from Ohtani's account. Whatever bank Ohtani uses, I want nothing to do with that bank. Releasing all that money _over the phone?_ Millions of dollars and you don't have to step into the bank once? Nah...two words: Unclean resolution.
He impersonated Ohtani over the phone
Thats still wild no official signature is needed. I work for a certain evil Agency and I cant take a single dollar from someones bank account unless there is a signature authorizing it. We are explicotly prohibited from setting them up on any kind of direct debit service over the phone, nothing happens without signed authorization but somehow THIS shit happened? Craaaazy.
Are you questioning the FBI again? Why don't you check it out yourself?
You mean… unclean for you. Ippei was an authorized account user and could go in person, over the phone, on an app, through email, whatever he wanted.
@@Revenant36, well explained

Stop with the "apologize" crap. No one needs to apologize for asking questions.
For?
Or maybe ohtani placed a lot of action through ippie, the fall guy
Numbers don't speak any language. Shohei is probably innocent, but if not, MLB will try to sweep it under the rug.
Sure he did. Shohei isn't that naive and innocent.
yes he is....the guy focuses on baseball 24-7 and just has enough time to eat and sleep.
His money was managed by his mom in Japan so he could focus on Baseball. Ippei was the one managing in U.S.
How could Ohtani not miss $16 million?
All the Ohtani super fans say he doesn't care at all about money even though he makes a massive amount.
He doesn't watch his money every day like your broke ass
@@MikeBA10the dude gave up 200 million dollars to come to the angels early and make 3 million a year lol. But please go on
@@Revenant36 he makes a hell of a lot more than 3 million. His endorsement deals push him into the multiple tens of millions. But yes go on.
Ippei turn off the notifications. Read the affidavit
I can't transfer 1k without the bank screaming bloody murder like it was fraud. But you can just get on a phone speak some Japanese and get 500k?
Yeah but you're a nobody. Of course you'd get the 20 questions routine. Most of us would.
No bank wants to lose a customer like Shohei Ohtani and are going to treat him with royal gloves.
… yes? Lol phone confirmation and security questions. No bank wants to make it harder than that to use them or people will just go to other banks lol especially wealthy clients
Yeah but you're a nobody. Of course you're going to get the 20 questions routine like most of us would. But if you're a bank, of course you want to keep a high value customer like Shohei Ohtani and are going to give him the royal glove treatment when possible.
You're clearly not a VIP
You most certainly more than just “questioned” to cater to your base and all that talk on responsibility sounds like victim-blaming rather than “feeling bad!”
I have a hard time believing this is not a "cover job". $700 million is at stake after all.
Let it go!! Shohei’s INNOCENT, you’ve got nothing, it’s over now😢
that's just your microwave brain thinking too much...let it rest.
Exactly! 700 million is at stake which is why Ohtoni would not be involved in betting.
@@RealityHurts923 haha perhaps but also a cover up could also be in order too.
@@Atsuya02 Why be disrespectful? Im just stating my opinion. Geesh
What a quality fall guy. I wish I had one like that
Stupid comment
I thought that was a fast investigation even the federal investigation was fast kinda feels like dodgers swept it under the rug lets see if he does it again
you must be a Giants fan....
@AK-qo6tx lol yeah and if ohtani was a giants you guys would be still bitching... I bet he will do it again
You understand this is a federal crime right?
Dodgers swept under the rug? Just how dumb you are
i think the investigation was ongoing before the ESPN story broke more recently
I just don’t buy the 16M left your back account without you, or your accountant raising a red flag. MLB is covering this up.
I don’t believe anything about this story. Most likely Ohtani was guilty but MLB had to save face
