  • Last night, Jake Evans suffered a brutal knock out from Mark Scheifele at the end of the 3rd period. This was game one of the Montreal Canadiens vs the Winnipeg Jets NHL playoff series. Such as sad hit following the John Tavares hit just a few short weeks ago.
    Evans was knocked cold on the nice. Reports state that he was actually in his hotel room that night. In this video I discussed the injury, the response of the medical team, and review why he may not have gone to the hospital.

    Update via Twitter:
    "Dominique Ducharme confirms that Jake Evans is doing better, and was not hospitalized following an evaluation by team doctors. He will be out for an undetermined period of time."
    So it does appear his examination was reassuring and Jake Evans did not go to the hospital. This is definitely a good sign. The medical team likely had a reassuring physical exam, neck exam, and neurological exam to ensure he did not require further imaging of his head and spine. Hit definitely looks a lot worse on video!

    I've read the Habs have a really great doctor that has been with the team for a long time and has saved a ton of players over the years. I was wondering if you know anything about that

      Yea I think this plays a huge role. Usually the doctors for professional teams are trauma surgeons themselves so they are very comfortable with managing trauma. I have no doubt they made the right call with the information they got when they took him off the ice.

    Well it's better to hear back in the hotel room, I suppose. At least it's not an immediate emergency situation.

      Yea for sure. Because we don’t know what goes on in the back end, we can’t know for sure what happened.

    If you really breakdown multiple camera angles of the hit, this hit really isnt all that bad apart from the concussion it caused. No head contact, no elbow, he didnt leave ground before contact and was gliding before the hit. I believe Evan's prior history of concussions had a lot to do with his scary initial symptoms...

    I know every NFL stadium has medical imaging capabilities on-site, so perhaps Winnipeg has some as well and they were able to check for a subdural hematoma at the stadium.

    • @SonamMD
      @SonamMD  3 года назад +1

      Really. That’s actually quite interesting. The states definitely have the upper hand when it comes to acute medical care. From my understanding I don’t believe CT scanners are available in Canadian NHL venues. With Tavares for example, they had to take him to Montreal hospital for acute assessment and management. I wonder if they perhaps have X-rays on site which would make more sense.

      @@SonamMD The NFL does have much more money than the NHL, but I hope that Evans at least got x-rayed. My mind always goes back to Natasha Richardson.

    • @SonamMD

      @@andrewcuda51 For sure. While an x-ray is adequate to clear a c-spine, we almost always elect to do a CT c-spine to rule out hidden fractures. When people come into us with severe trauma, in most cases we CT their head and neck - 2 places you do not want to miss an injury!
