M is certainly one of the best films ever made and it's among my absolute favorites. Even so, it seems to me that it contains a logical flaw. The mob apparently intends to execute Beckert after his horrific show trial, but what would have been the point of that? After all, the entire reason for their elaborate manhunt with the beggars etc. was to halt Beckert's murder spree and thus get the police off their back. But the only way the police and the public could be certain that Beckert was out of the way would have been through a legal court trial and formal execution or at least a long prison sentence. Simply offing Beckert in that cellar would have accomplished nothing, since presumably nobody would ever have found out about it. A legal conviction would have been essential for the criminals too.
