I have a F-350 dually with a payload of almost 5700 lb. I would be surprised if your camper isn’t more than that. The young lady that is working on this build with a bum leg is amazing!

Aviation Dope would last longer and hold up nicer against the wind blowing across it. Aviation Dope is used on the airfoils(wings) and cockpit on light weight Aerobatic plans know as a Scitaborea which is literally Aerobatics spelled backwards because it's a stunt plan so all of the flexing and turbulence the Aviation Dope holds up. If you start noticing the paint failing and need a longer lasting solution, that would be a great option especially if you decide to do another build and only do a frame an use sheets instead of wood to make it even lighter weight.

Great Idea! I'm in the planning stages of building a slide on camper/micro house. Putting it on a landscape trailer. So I can use the trailer for other things as well. Your idea of a truckbed tiny house has given me more design ideas.The raised bedroom could be something I could use in my own build. Gonna watch the tour next.
Nice build ....I have bought a couple slide in campers that were fixer uppers and repaired them for the road , but never from scratch like you 2 did ....Great Job !! I have a large Polar slide in camper now Im going to rebuild one day . Im going with the metal studs in certain structural places for more support . This is by far the best video on building your slide in camper I've seen. You guys did a great job. Although, I would have liked the time lapse to be a bit slower; I was pausing and "rewinding" to get a glimpse of the details and product materials. I did notice one item in the video that caused me some concern though, the position of the propane tank. Your video showed it directly under the sink. I'm concern for the safety aspect of leaking gas. I hope that you compensated for this by allowing for max ventilation and have an appropriate amount and placement of gas detectors. Looking forward to more videos. Great job.
Thanks. I agree with you and wanted to slow it down, but it’s already so long that I didn’t think anyone would watch it. The tank is to the side slightly, and secured with ventilation.
Love this build! I'm actually chopping up a 2 door Jeep Cherokee XJ and doing this.... but I'm convinced you were chewing the microphone while you did the voiceover.
Dose your truck rock from side to side? If so, you may want to beef up your springs in the back. I built something like yours back in the 70's for my truck. Lived in it for 3 years, and loved it.

Well I don't have a new truck but I got a 89 Chevy 3/4 ton for $200 needs a motor I can't complain body looks GREAT. Getting floor in shop concerted in 2 weeks then will get started on my camper hope it will look as good as yours. But Alabama boy's service and ladies good job.

It makes me excited just thinking about it lol. (May sound silly) it seems like their is a nice traveling community. I appreciate the offer for advise/insight. If i have any question , i will for sure give yall a hollar. We used to travel for work in a fifth wheel. Done that for 10 years. (My parents traveled for work most of my life before that. Thats how i got into it) Then we bought a mobile home. Its been 4 years. And i just cant get the itch of traveling to go away lol.
Rando Jo the nomad community is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Definitely seek out festivals and meetups early in your trip. The people we have met on the road are just incredible. It does not sound silly at all. I’m excited for you!
Finally got time to watch the build. It's amazing what you guys got done in a short amount of time. Awesome job! I think best part about that is, you can buy a piece of land, set that thing down on level ground somewhere and you have a home. If you don't like the neighborhood pick it back up and move to the next town haha.

I re- injured it on a hiking trip about a year before this build started, and just started being able to put weight on it a few weeks ago. I love it remember you can cover it with fiberglass to waterproof or just use the glue with out the fiberglass mats I use the liquid on my wood boats after I paint them the risen drys like glass and is strong I'm going to build one soon I was looking to buy one and 20 to 30 grand no thanks
A domed roof is a good option for water mitigation. Metal roofing is a must for long term usage. These rubber roofs that they put on campers nowadays are a joke. All windows need rounded corners to reduce the stresses on the corners. Don't be tempted to simply nail it together. Screw and glue all timber. Simply, th8e build has to stand up to the stresses of road conditions. Having said all that, you can end up with something far better than anything commercially offered. Everything that I have seen on the market is nonsensical junk and purely criminal for the money they want for it. Recently, I went to a dealership and the models were falling apart from the manufacturer to the dealership. I applaud your efforts and you will have something you can not only enjoy but also repair if necessary.
It has been just over 1000 days on the road and a little more than 60k miles, cross country and back a few times. I had two things going on in my mind first was that truck did not look like enough truck for the camper you were building ,,, new truck cured problem maybe... next what is the total height going to be looks like very high I guessing 11 or 12 feet
Yes. New truck cured the problem lol.. we would have been screwed with the 1500. You were close. 12.5 from the ground. We are on day 206 and are about to cross into our 16th state:) I hope you’ll check out some newer videos!
Looks killer but HEAVY....I would think for MPG driveability maitaince and on road saftey a diesel 3500 dually would have been a better choice for the truck I'd be surprised if the whole thing comes in at or under the GVW of a 4 door 3/4 ton truck but as long as what you have works nice job enjoy!
Lol honestly we have no idea what it weighs. We know the truck is handling it well after 450 days and around 26,000 miles. There are unquestionably things we would do differently if we had it to do over again. We went with gas instead of diesel because it’s what Shane knows how to work on if something goes wrong.
Good call man. That’s exactly what we wound up doing, just a couple of months later. It is heavy, but we’ve added some air bags to the rear suspension and the truck is handling fine. Almost 20,000 miles so far:)
@@LoveHut4Life when you decide to switch to a new one build the main runs and corners out of aluminium bar and angle find a few scraped RV's the newer ones are a fiberglass and plastic mix very strong and structural when attached to the frame in fill with wood framing you have a tuff super structure that can take most abuse and a lot less weight . The local metal recycling center near me has a few new RV's every month the parts are not metal so they don't charge you can get 2 to 4 eight ft sections of skin with no holes in it for each RV think about it next time happy traveling enjoy your life it's the only one you have
@@LoveHut4Life 25 yrs ago, my new wife & I did a similar, yet much smaller project. We used mylar bubble pack in sheet panals coverd by painted computer box cardboard. Installed inside a aluminum cab high camper shell. On a '68 1/2t GMC. We still have that rig. 😊 if you make it to the Central Oregon Coast, stop by. Florence, OR 97439.
How does it handle winds? How does it do when a semi passes by? How does it drive on the highway? Any turbulence? Would greatly appreciate a response as I am doing something similar. Thanks in advance.
We don’t go over 60, so we don’t take interstates; we also generally don’t drive if the winds are over 20mph. We have been forced to stay an extra day or 2 a couple of times. I suggest going slightly shorter, both because of winds and because of some bridges we know we will have to avoid in the North East. Semi trucks are fine as long as the driver is nice, and we let them pass every chance we get. Occasionally an asshole will purposely rock us, but that is rare. Most people are good. Good luck on your build. Shane and I are both willing to answer any questions you have. Hope to see you on the road some day! I’ve had mixed results with liquid nails, usually good but not always, some people swear by it… but Titebond II Wood Glue is universally touted by the communities of boat builders who build with wood or wood and fiberglass. The liquid nails will probably be fine, but for future efforts or any repairs, you may want to consider the Titebond II (NOT the Titebond III, it isn’t waterproof). What was the problem getting it into the truck? Was it too heavy for the jacks, or were they just not working right? Love the build!

How much was this? Also how heavy? Just wondering because to buy a new one its 15 thousand for basic hard wall camper which is nuts! Plus if its to heavy my truck is only a half ton Chevy. I'm afraid it might be to much for it's suspension.
We spent a little under $4,000 building it, but that was before inflation went nuts. Probably closer to 7 now. No idea on the weight, but after 45,000 miles and 2 years the truck is still doing just fine

Yeah it always seems to work out that way. In hindsight, we probably should have slowed down and taken a little more time and effort building this, but then again our adventure would be different and I wouldn’t change a thing. This thing has over 50,000 miles and 4 cross country trips on it now, and is still holding pretty strong
@@LoveHut4Life I was just saying projects are easier said than done. You did a great job. The effort adds value. The more difficult something is to do, the more we appreciate the results. I have several RV's but was thinking about making a timber framed shack that can be placed on a trailer. Sort of a truck camper for a trailer, (can be removed when I want the trailer for other uses).
Lol I just watched again, liquid nails would hold that whole shack together probably better than nails. And those full sheets of beadboard you used will be strong and be flexible . So what do you think of the project now? Maybe a future video? Jeff and Amy
There are things we would do differently for sure, but we still absolutely love our little home. It kept us safe through one hell of a storm last night. We make small improvements all the time, and I’m sure always will. We will do an updated tour at the 1 year mark, but you can watch it grow through our weekly updates too.

There weren’t ever any plans outside of the rough drawings you saw at the beginning. We just decided to wing it. 🤷♀️Absolutely no clue on the weight, but we’ve been driving around for almost 1000 days now and somewhere close to 50,000 miles.

I've watched a BUNCH of these DIY truck camper builds. I'm planning to do one myself, though with a different construction method. That said, I do have a question for you. I see you built your camper to extend beyond the bounds of the truck bed. Every other camper I've seen built has been built to fit within the bed with the tailgate closed. I've always wondered why they didn't extend it to at least the length of the down tailgate. That's about 20" of valuable space they lose by not extending it. Do you know why someone might not want to extend and can you tell me why you've chosen to extend? My plan has always been to extend. It just never made sense to me to throw away 20" of space when space is already so limited.
I assume they choose not to extend for 2 reasons. Parking is easier with a shorter structure, and they are worried about the strength of the tailgate. Also, we had to place wood underneath the house to level the bed with tailgate so that the weight was distributed better.
Honestly, our choice limits us. Attaching any trailer would be hard unless it had a long tongue. Also the weight distribution factor over the axels, we also lost the ability to have a Porch or landing for gear. I would choose to make it shorter... but that’s only because of technical difficulties it’s caused

Great Idea! I'm in the planning stages of building a slide on camper/micro house. Putting it on a landscape trailer. So I can use the trailer for other things as well. Your idea of a truckbed tiny house has given me more design ideas.The raised bedroom could be something I could use in my own build. Gonna watch the tour next.

I have a large Polar slide in camper now Im going to rebuild one day . Im going with the metal studs in certain structural places for more support . This is by far the best video on building your slide in camper I've seen. You guys did a great job. Although, I would have liked the time lapse to be a bit slower; I was pausing and "rewinding" to get a glimpse of the details and product materials. I did notice one item in the video that caused me some concern though, the position of the propane tank. Your video showed it directly under the sink. I'm concern for the safety aspect of leaking gas. I hope that you compensated for this by allowing for max ventilation and have an appropriate amount and placement of gas detectors. Looking forward to more videos. Great job.

Dose your truck rock from side to side? If so, you may want to beef up your springs in the back. I built something like yours back in the 70's for my truck. Lived in it for 3 years, and loved it.
When off road it does. Beefing up the truck is definitely in the plans.

Well I don't have a new truck but I got a 89 Chevy 3/4 ton for $200 needs a motor I can't complain body looks GREAT. Getting floor in shop concerted in 2 weeks then will get started on my camper hope it will look as good as yours. But Alabama boy's service and ladies good job.

It makes me excited just thinking about it lol. (May sound silly) it seems like their is a nice traveling community. I appreciate the offer for advise/insight. If i have any question , i will for sure give yall a hollar. We used to travel for work in a fifth wheel. Done that for 10 years. (My parents traveled for work most of my life before that. Thats how i got into it) Then we bought a mobile home. Its been 4 years. And i just cant get the itch of traveling to go away lol.
Rando Jo the nomad community is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Definitely seek out festivals and meetups early in your trip. The people we have met on the road are just incredible.

Finally got time to watch the build. It's amazing what you guys got done in a short amount of time. Awesome job! I think best part about that is, you can buy a piece of land, set that thing down on level ground somewhere and you have a home. If you don't like the neighborhood pick it back up and move to the next town haha.

Thankyou! My foot has been a battle for me for almost a decade now, after a car wreck. I re- injured it on a hiking trip about a year before this build started, and just started being able to put weight on it a few weeks ago.
Hopefully your surgery is more of a short term deal, but it definitely doesn’t have to slow you down:)

I love it remember you can cover it with fiberglass to waterproof or just use the glue with out the fiberglass mats I use the liquid on my wood boats after I paint them the risen drys like glass and is strong I'm going to build one soon I was looking to buy one and 20 to 30 grand no thanks

A domed roof is a good option for water mitigation. Metal roofing is a must for long term usage. These rubber roofs that they put on campers nowadays are a joke. All windows need rounded corners to reduce the stresses on the corners. Don't be tempted to simply nail it together. Screw and glue all timber. Simply, th8e build has to stand up to the stresses of road conditions. Having said all that, you can end up with something far better than anything commercially offered. Everything that I have seen on the market is nonsensical junk and purely criminal for the money they want for it. Recently, I went to a dealership and the models were falling apart from the manufacturer to the dealership. I applaud your efforts and you will have something you can not only enjoy but also repair if necessary.
It has been just over 1000 days on the road and a little more than 60k miles, cross country and back a few times.
It has required some repairs, and our first few rain storms certainly taught us a lot, but not bad for $4,000 and a little over a month of building before and after work.

I had two things going on in my mind first was that truck did not look like enough truck for the camper you were building ,,, new truck cured problem maybe... next what is the total height going to be looks like very high I guessing 11 or 12 feet

Looks killer but HEAVY....I would think for MPG driveability maitaince and on road saftey a diesel 3500 dually would have been a better choice for the truck I'd be surprised if the whole thing comes in at or under the GVW of a 4 door 3/4 ton truck but as long as what you have works nice job enjoy!
Lol honestly we have no idea what it weighs. We know the truck is handling it well after 450 days and around 26,000 miles.
There are unquestionably things we would do differently if we had it to do over again.
We went with gas instead of diesel because it’s what Shane knows how to work on if something goes wrong.
That thing is ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh built like ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh tank love the build though 😂

Good call man. That’s exactly what we wound up doing, just a couple of months later. It is heavy, but we’ve added some air bags to the rear suspension and the truck is handling fine. Almost 20,000 miles so far:)
@@LoveHut4Life when you decide to switch to a new one build the main runs and corners out of aluminium bar and angle find a few scraped RV's the newer ones are a fiberglass and plastic mix very strong and structural when attached to the frame in fill with wood framing you have a tuff super structure that can take most abuse and a lot less weight . The local metal recycling center near me has a few new RV's every month the parts are not metal so they don't charge you can get 2 to 4 eight ft sections of skin with no holes in it for each RV think about it next time happy traveling enjoy your life it's the only one you have

Installed inside a aluminum cab high camper shell. On a '68 1/2t GMC. We still have that rig. 😊 if you make it to the Central Oregon Coast, stop by. Florence, OR 97439.

See this is my plan. Buy a truck and build me a tiny house in the bed. Though I plan to fiber glass seal it.

How does it handle winds? How does it do when a semi passes by? How does it drive on the highway? Any turbulence? Would greatly appreciate a response as I am doing something similar. Thanks in advance.
We don’t go over 60, so we don’t take interstates; we also generally don’t drive if the winds are over 20mph. We have been forced to stay an extra day or 2 a couple of times.
I suggest going slightly shorter, both because of winds and because of some bridges we know we will have to avoid in the North East.
Semi trucks are fine as long as the driver is nice, and we let them pass every chance we get. Occasionally an asshole will purposely rock us, but that is rare. Most people are good.

I’ve had mixed results with liquid nails, usually good but not always, some people swear by it… but Titebond II Wood Glue is universally touted by the communities of boat builders who build with wood or wood and fiberglass. The liquid nails will probably be fine, but for future efforts or any repairs, you may want to consider the Titebond II (NOT the Titebond III, it isn’t waterproof).
What was the problem getting it into the truck? Was it too heavy for the jacks, or were they just not working right?

I try not to use liquid nail anymore. It failed for this use after 2+ years testing. Type 2 is the shit 🤙
How much was this? Also how heavy? Just wondering because to buy a new one its 15 thousand for basic hard wall camper which is nuts! Plus if its to heavy my truck is only a half ton Chevy. I'm afraid it might be to much for it's suspension.
We spent a little under $4,000 building it, but that was before inflation went nuts. Probably closer to 7 now. No idea on the weight, but after 45,000 miles and 2 years the truck is still doing just fine
Rubber roofing best and no silicone dicor sealant best
There are lots of ways to do it… ours didn’t go long without having to do some serious repairs, but it’s still holding strong 4 years later
I would have used Faom or fiber glass and built it out of Fiber glass and Foam
Yeah we have run into a few foamies on the road. Cool concept, but it would have been far more expensive.
Can’t say I would take that route even with nearly three years of research and overthinking everything I did wrong.
Spray the hole thing with linex or rhino liner it'll never leak or break!

Every project I have had seemed like it would take a couple of weeks in the planning. A couple of months later I am still working on it.
Yeah it always seems to work out that way. In hindsight, we probably should have slowed down and taken a little more time and effort building this, but then again our adventure would be different and I wouldn’t change a thing. This thing has over 50,000 miles and 4 cross country trips on it now, and is still holding pretty strong

I have several RV's but was thinking about making a timber framed shack that can be placed on a trailer. Sort of a truck camper for a trailer, (can be removed when I want the trailer for other uses).
Lol I just watched again, liquid nails would hold that whole shack together probably better than nails. And those full sheets of beadboard you used will be strong and be flexible . So what do you think of the project now?

There are things we would do differently for sure, but we still absolutely love our little home. It kept us safe through one hell of a storm last night.
We make small improvements all the time, and I’m sure always will.

There weren’t ever any plans outside of the rough drawings you saw at the beginning. We just decided to wing it.

Sure. We’ve been meaning to do a full video on it for a while now. We’ve improved it significantly since this video. It now holds ice for a full week, sometimes longer if it’s freezing at night, and is out performing the Orca in our back seat by days.

I've watched a BUNCH of these DIY truck camper builds. I'm planning to do one myself, though with a different construction method. That said, I do have a question for you. I see you built your camper to extend beyond the bounds of the truck bed. Every other camper I've seen built has been built to fit within the bed with the tailgate closed. I've always wondered why they didn't extend it to at least the length of the down tailgate. That's about 20" of valuable space they lose by not extending it. Do you know why someone might not want to extend and can you tell me why you've chosen to extend?
My plan has always been to extend. It just never made sense to me to throw away 20" of space when space is already so limited.
I assume they choose not to extend for 2 reasons. Parking is easier with a shorter structure, and they are worried about the strength of the tailgate.
Also, we had to place wood underneath the house to level the bed with tailgate so that the weight was distributed better.
What construction method are you planning on using? Honestly there is quite a bit we would do differently a second time around.

Honestly, our choice limits us. Attaching any trailer would be hard unless it had a long tongue. Also the weight distribution factor over the axels, we also lost the ability to have a Porch or landing for gear. I would choose to make it shorter... but that’s only because of technical difficulties it’s caused
