  • Hello & welcome! In this painting session I'm sharing the beginning of a new series of abstract paintings, inspired by a blend of words, places and experiences exploring what the Outdoors means to me.
    Recently, I've been holding myself back with the need to re-invent the wheel all the time in my creative practice. I've made this video and project, structured to help a little with that. Stay tuned to see how it develops!

    I was hesitant about the possibility of those bright pinks and yellows turning into something that looks like a feeling I have when I’m in nature but you absolutely captured those feelings in such an inviting way. I feel like I could look at these and meditate back on so many pleasant voyages.

    Weird, I only got 10 seconds in and I already decided that I liked this video so gave it a thumbs up. It may have been the cat? Or it may have been the fact you were on the floor and seeing someone on the floor doing art makes it feel more accessible to me therefore I relate? I relate even though I don't do art, I want to, the joy of looking at art, watching videos or people doing art (here I am now) gives me joy and I want to be able to give myself that joy, that thing I can do on my own, at my home (which I pay ridiculous amount in rent) but no art studio. I think this video spoke to the anxious part of me who doesn't know how to do art but has some supplies. and for that I thank you. I didn't do any while watching this video but I imaged where I could do art while watching this video :D.

    • @OrlaStevens

      Haha the cats are pretty magic 🪄 if you have a corner you can make a mess in and just play, absolutely go for it! A wall, a kitchen table, a floor, doesn’t really matter :) it’s just about getting started, and that doesn’t need to look any certain way to get stuck in and have some fun! ☀️

    Hi Orla, I have never seen anyone paint on the floor, it must give you a different perspective, I'm going to give it a try for sure. It was so interesting and inspiring to hear about your thought processes, and I love the alphabet exercise you've used, I'm definitely going to try that too. Thanks for sharing so much background information and for taking the time to make the video. Oh and I love your cats got a bit of air time! 😅

    • @OrlaStevens
      @OrlaStevens  8 месяцев назад

      I love it ☀️ Mostly because it lets me move around when I’m working, and it’s great for pouring paint, and shifting the papers or canvases. Helen Frankenthaler inspired the floor working!
      Thank you; the alphabet idea has come from a great teacher Tom Froese, it’s a really great way to guide a project. Haha its impossible to keep the cats out of the frame, so they get their moment to shine 🐈🐈‍⬛

Even if that's just prep for it! I also love using timers on my phone when I'm short on time - great for exercises / just getting started / when I'm in a muddle and just need to do something 🌿

    You have such creativity. Im trying and im not doing that good with it. I just started to get into my art for approximately 3 yrs now. I wasted many years not using my gift. But i never could draw off the too of my head. I have to be copying a picture. So the same goes for now. I dont know how to get into my right side of brain and i cant come up with any creativity of my own. But anyways you are a true artist.

      Hello 👋 that’s great to hear you’ve been practicing, and thank you for the kind words 😊 I’m sorry to hear your struggling to find your feet - something I like to try when I’m feeling stuck is to start with copying a picture, or working from a reference photo. Then I’ll hide the original reference photo and use my own drawing or painting I just made as a reference to make a new work, and then I’ll use that new one as a reference to paint a new one again - sometimes that step by step away from the original can help ease me into something that’s more my own, and is a great practice exercise x
