    • @deltanebula8622

      VERE well the word saturation for example usually has to do with having brighter colors. Music has taken this word and used it to mean something else. But really, any descriptive word in music has this problem. Punchy refers to impact but that comes from touch, warm is also based on touch. There are so many words like this. I have to say that I don't know whether other languages are different or whether this is a common problem

    Interesting.
    For decades we designed and built as noise free and distortion free gear as possible, and this generation can't hear music without crapping it up with noise and distortion, and of course, ZERO dynamic range and as LOUD as possible.
    You have a minimum of 96 dB dynamic range and you can't wait to ruin it all with whatever you call this 'technology'.
    Try it MY way.
    One mic., one MONO tape machine, one basement, 65 dB dynamic range, MAYBE.
    Add people who know how to play music.
    I've been doing this since 1961.
    When we really had to know how sound and sound recording worked, for real.

    A nice idea is to sidechain your track to a separate mixer channel, go crazy with saturation and slowly blend in the signal. I know it sounds kinda useless, but it lets you apply effects *on* the saturation. For example an Eq can prevent it from getting too dirty, and a compressor will make it more consistent. Great video as always, Michael

      @prod.extelligence 4 года назад +1

      hold up. can you explain the setup in a little more detail? I just tried to do this but I didn't get it to work.

    • @rhydes_
      @rhydes_ 4 года назад +2

      @@prod.extelligence the steps I list below are what I do on FL studio but I think it's about the same in every daw
      1. Assign your sound to a mixer track, let's call it track 1.
      2. Select track 1, go to the arrow at the bottom of *another* mixer track (track 2 I guess), right click and hit "sidechain to this track"
      3. (In FL studio you do this by fruity send) send the audio from track 1 to track 2. Now you have 2 identical sounds on 2 different tracks. Grab track 2's fader and pull it all the way down to -infinite
      4. Apply a saturation plug in like softube saturation knob at the start of track 2's effects chain. You probably want to exaggerate here, as not all of this grit is going to be used afterwards.
      5. So now you have the original sound on track 1 and a very dirtorted version on track 2. Track 2's fader is at - inf, time to change that. Start slightly pushing it up, thus adding more and more of this dirtorted volume. Once you are happy with the sound, leave the fader where it is. Keep in mind this increases the overall volume, so don't get fooled by making everything super loud.
      6. Most fun part: the entire track 2's effects chain is empty, so you can add any effect there. The effect will only affect the distorted part of your sound, hence you actually get to shape this distortion any way you want.
      I hope this helped, have a great time producing!

    • @prod.extelligence
      @prod.extelligence 4 года назад +2

      @@rhydes_ wow! thank you so much for that elaborate explanation! i really appreciate it! i got it to work now :) but just to be sure, this is basically the same as duplicating the sound and putting the second version on another mixer track, right? i've done this with 808s where I cloned my 808, put it on another mixer track, distorted the shit out of it and then mixed the two versions together.

    I have recently been figuring out saturation, and I'd like to share a couple of suggestions for plugins. First, there are the Air Windows plugins that seem crazy at first (no GUI), but really are great if you learn them. There's ToTape5, channel7 (and relatives), etc etc. Great. Then there's all the Analog Obsession plugins; just give some of them a try. For paid, there's a sale on plugin alliance Phil's cascade, black box HG-2 and the incredible HG-2MS. For transformer saturation, I think kazrog true iron is unbeatable. I should also mention waves NLS; very good for emulating an old analog console and in sale now. There's also chowtape for free. Other suggestions?

      UniversaL from what I know it’s just a function f (in the mathematical sense) that takes an input x and outputs y = f(x). That’s why you can usually draw your own function f in a lot of them.
      Now for the use ... I use them to make all kind of over the top distortion for any kind of aggressive element in a track, but not so much for mixing.

      Hm... Maybe this is "Transfer Function" actually.
      _
      Quote from Wikipedia.
      "In engineering, a transfer function (also known as system function[1] or network function) of an electronic or control system component is a mathematical function which theoretically models the device's output for each possible input.[2][3][4] In its simplest form, this function is a two-dimensional graph of an independent scalar input versus the dependent scalar output, called a transfer curve or characteristic curve. Transfer functions for components are used to design and analyze systems assembled from components, particularly using the block diagram technique, in electronics and control theory.
      (In russian wikipedia that describes harder, lol)
      _
      I think this IS "Transfer Function" :D

    • @paulmichelon2176
      @paulmichelon2176 4 года назад

      Yes sure it is a transfer function, but I didn’t know your level of expertise in engineering so this wouldn’t have helped I think.
      Still, the transfer function is just f : [0,1] -> [0,1] and can be anything (that’s why you can draw the transfer function). There is no time effects as opposed to filter.
      Now it can be a bit more complex as there is usually oversampling in those devices to avoid aliasing, which includes filtering under the hoods. But that’s not the main effect

    QUESTION! Should you saturate each track directly, or run them through a bus with saturation? Does it matter?

    • @dvlce_music
      @dvlce_music 2 года назад

      I'm gonna preface with I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure it depends on the sound you're going for. If you bus them all to one saturation channel then it'll homogenize the mix and squish it all together. Saturating each track individually allows you to cater the saturation (and maybe even use different saturation) to each individual track and get them individually sounding saturated. So it's up to you what sound you want. Doing both could even be really nice if you don't overdo it

    Hi my name is Manuel Khoza Im from South Africa .I always viewed myself as a music genius as far as i can remember I've always tempered with music ,I can play guiatar, piano and I know how to produce my songs from scratch thanks to RUclips channels I've even learned more skills than I thought I would acquire,my problem is that I dont have a music certificate in which that crushes my spirit, I want to know about the music business so that I can Learn how to make money from music and that do I really need to have a music certificate coz I dont feel like I need it.
    Can you please 🙏 Help

      I will give you a tip right now and i say this with the fullest respect and dont mean to insult you in any way. You really need to get back on the ground and stop calling yourself a "music genius". Your singing is average at best but you can tell there was a lot of progress from older videos to new videos. Your guitar chords and picking in your videos is also average at best. The melodies from your videos are nothing special at all. Some really basic stuff that someone from elementary school with basic understanding of music can do. The mixing is alright, i think youre just starting out so thats fine. I definitely respect how you use your keyboard as a midi piano tho.
      I can tell youre really passionate about it and you want to reach a lot but you need to reflect better on your work and on yourself. Be honest with yourself. Just because you love something it doesnt mean youre some kind of genius. Self reflection will help you a lot to progress and really work on yourself. Thats the tip i can give you.

    Haha! I was glad i ve seen that again and i wil try to explain you and your view-ers as well !Non -liniar behaviour.Many user do not fully understood that and of course is a advanced top but let me clear a little .what you shown is the 2 representation of the sound 'harmonics" Since the sound has a 3 d aspect including time axes make us read that bahaviour like having that 3-axes as well (instead we do not have it) .ok similar comparation on waves-rock-wather .Simple because sounds is a sort of energy that need to disipate in a medium !And regardless the ignition point (initial frevc or tonic) will always disipate from that point all directions! PLEASE UNDERSTAND !That in what we do in rec sound or sound "info" manipulation should respect by alter in some degree the real deal hapening in real world!MAKE SENS TO YOU ?Ok scientiest have conducted 3d sound experimentation and they have been descover that .
    Since we humains are not prone to hear mentaly lower harmonics we tent to think ooo look it s disipate twourds hight frecv.Instead is not !Because visually we can visual that !
    Please look at sound fundamentals ,sound propagation and sound structure (generally ) and in deeph explination .
    Interesting way but many tech skip this bla bla bla and then make it harder to understand later.
    Now what is saturation starting from nature (direct to our hearing) ...... to saturation (coming from a havely alterated "signal" coming from a speaker) MAKE SENSE TO YOU ?

    My biggest disappointment with Saturn 2 is there are no settings that provide more even order harmonics relative to odd. It’s not even close, even the tube models. Gsatplus and spl twin tube can do this easily, which are both on all of my channels. Crazy.

    The issue I have with compression and saturation is I'm always incline to just use it on every single track. It's hard to tell if it needs it or not, especially since the effect can be subtle and hard to spot

  • @garyshore489
    @garyshore489 2 года назад

    The next step is to get your hands on a lot of different options for saturation-there's tons of free plugins out there,stock ones etc.
    You need to experience a lot of these different plugins as it's one of these effects where there is no wrong or right plugin,there's many of them and many producers have tons of different analog gear and plugins especially for this purpose-particular tools tend to fit particular jobs.
    Once you've got all these plugins if you're confused about what they're doing simply download the free Voxengo Span spectrum analyzer plugin,run a pure sine wave through it and see what your plugin is doing/what it's inducing.
    The next thing you must do when you're using saturation plugins or hardware is send in a good amount of signal.
    If you're sending in -30 or -40 db of signal you might actually not experience any saturation with these plug-ins;as explained re-the non-linear behavior aspect of working with saturation/distortion plugins and the relationship between the amount of signal/results produced,,some of these plug-ins don't even react to anything until you give them -20/-10 db of gain.
    Experiment with pushing up your gain going into the plugins and make sure that you're maintaining good gain staging.
    In this first example I'm going to be adding some distortion to this drum track;I'll play it clean just to
    start off with.
    The first thing I would recommend(which I don't usually recommend when mixing) is to solo the track as it allows you to tune in to what is happening with the saturation.
    I'm going to be using the Izotope Ozone 9 Exciter module because it lets me choose between some different types of saturation easily.
    First I'm going to use tube saturation and what I want you to notice is that as I'm increasing it up to around halfway you might hear that the low mids start feeling a little bit more full and a little bit more reinforced and then beyond there it's just getting a lot brighter with a lot more high frequencies
    and things actually start distorting and sounding almost clipped.
    Now it's sounding more reinforced and louder but what was interesting was that even though things were distorting and sounding a lot louder the peak loudness was actually going down on this db meter on the output so as I increase it we're getting less peak loudness but the average loudness and the perceived loudness is increasing.
    This is why I really wanted to explain that non-linear behavior at the start.Even just going a few more percent up here just radically changes how this distortion sounds.
    What is very common is distorting something quite a lot and then pulling the mix amount down,i.e. we're distorting it like crazy but then we're only going to blend in actually a small amount of that distortion....for this particular track I would pull it back like this.
    Let's try some different types of distortion,this time I'm going to go to "warm"....this should be a lot more subtle but you'll feel that instead of adding a lot of high end it's simply just reinforcing that kick
    and snare,pulling out the bottom of the snare/beefing up the kick drum...you can hear that as we get to the higher frequencies the hi-hats start to break apart so that's something to listen for in the high end.

    Michael, thanks for posting all the great tutorials. You have a gift, bro. Rarely do you make a beginner video where I feel like something material was omitted. Usually, I do not have to watch other peoples videos to clarify something you taught. You have profoundly shortened my learning curve for FL Studio. I live in Nashville, Tennessee, USA. I assume because you rock the union jack wall hanging that you are British. Thus, I wish you would review the SSL 2 usb audio interface. I would love to here a Brit discuss SSL. My engineering teacher, who is Russian, not British, devoted a lot of time to discussing how SSL engineers historically set the bar. Due to pandemic backorder at the time I purchased, I ended up ordering my SSL 2 from Liverpool. The 4000 E eq saturation emulation is remarkable to my ears, especially at the price point. Easiest way to get that kind of sound.

    Saturation is a very broad effect and it can be a deliberate and obvious effect such as an
    overdriven guitar tone or a heavily distorted 808 bass sample but it's also the more subtle side
    effect induced by signal processing so virtually any circuit i.e.(tube/tape/transistor or even
    plug-in)has saturation to a certain degree.
    Analog style saturation-
    Part of the appeal or fascination with saturation is that,as a lot of these devices are analog,
    records made back in the good old days often sounded really warm full punchy and thick and part of this is down to the fact that there was subtle saturation on every single track in those mixes just naturally due to the devices they were recorded on and mixed through.
    Saturation is when extra sound is induced or added to your original signal.
    There's two main types of harmonic saturation-even and odd harmonics.
    i.e-
    fundamental x 2/4/8 etc=even
    fundamental x 3/5/7 etc= odd
    In both cases we're adding signal or notes that weren't there previously albeit at a slightly lower level into the higher frequencies.
    In general the even harmonics tend to give a feeling of support,clarity and fullness mainly because
    you're adding in the octave and another octave above as well and adding the octave to the original sound sort of gives this feeling of support maybe a subtle sort of feeling of doubling that original sound whereas the odd harmonics add a lot more richness,edge,bite,+ buzziness to the sound w/more high frequencies.
    Even and odd harmonics both can sound excellent depending on what you're using them for it's not that one is better than the other.
    Besides a few plugins and wave shapers,almost all plugins and certainly all analog hardware doesn't simply induce even or odd harmonics as many people believe.
    All of these different devices and plug-ins have a different combination or distribution of these even and odd harmonics depending on a lot of different factors.
    You may have heard that tubes have only even harmonics and maybe tape has only odd harmonics but this simply isn't true.
    It's true that certain devices favor certain harmonics-even or odd,but it's much more than just whether it's got a tube in it or whether there's a bit of tape there.
    From an engineering background it' all has to do with the topology of the circuit,not just the tube or the tape-it's every single piece of wire,every capacitor...especially the transformers make a huge difference,it's just the general design of the circuitry and not just one component.
    Non-linearity or non-linear behavior=
    Basically with any device that induces saturation or distortion what you might expect is that at all
    levels of volume or gain that you feed into that device you'd have exactly the same type of saturation i.e.the same distribution of even and odd harmonics but at varying levels.
    However,actually with almost all of these devices and plugins,if you feed a different amount of volume into them or drive them differently you get dramatic differences in the distributions of odd and even harmonics and the tone of the saturation that's generated.
    I have an example here with a tube emulation and you'll see that as I increase the amount of drive there's a big difference in the distribution of harmonics.At some points it's favoring those even harmonics then the odd then back to the even again.
    These devices respond completely different to transients/different amounts of signal.
    To be able to accurately hear the effect of saturation being applied on a given signal you need something that can give you an extended high frequency response.
    Reference monitors are great in a well-treated room but most of the time the subtle differences of saturation are a little bit harder to hear correctly on studio monitors whereas in headphones you can hear if you're overdoing it a little bit too much

    My personal taste, but drums were always with hearable distorting which I didn't like, there I wouldn't blend any saturation. Played on very good sound system doesn't sound good. My 2 cent comment.

  • @garyshore489
    @garyshore489 2 года назад

    I'm going to swap over to tape and what you'll hear is that it starts boosting the high frequencies,so with the mids and top of the snare and the hi-hats it starts boosting them a little bit sooner than
    with the tube saturation...even by the time I get to here I'm hearing those hi-hats substantially louder so what I'm going to use for the drums is the tube because I don't want the top end to be boosted this much.
    Although it says tube,it's not just modeling a tube,it's probably modeling the whole circuitry that was in that tube device;a tube on its own does not provide warmth although it glows really hot,is warm, if you touch it it would be hot,however the tube on its own is actually just inducing higher harmonics, it's the whole circuit(mainly the transformer)that is adding all of that weight,extra body and warmth to the signal.
    The crucial step once you've picked the type of saturation you want is to unsolo the track turn everything else back on and this is what you use to blend in the amount of saturation because on its own you'll almost always get the wrong amount of distortion.
    If you listen with and without the saturation you'll see that the one with the saturation is actually much more quiet in terms of peak loudness,it's 6 db quieter give or take but the perceived loudness
    and the overall loudness in my opinion is a little bit higher,at least in these headphones.
    The way I like to use saturation in a mix is usually just subtly so every single track just has a little bit of saturation.it doesn't have to be "in your face";those drums were probably a little bit over the top but especially when you're using saturation to reinforce a track with those extra second order even harmonics what you'll find is that if you use just a little bit on 10 or 20 tracks all together it sums together to a much punchy,full sounding mix.
    Now I'm going to go on to the guitar which is an excellent example of why you should be blending in
    the saturation with everything else playing.
    What this other saturation plug-in(Brainworx Black Box) lets me do is not really increase the loudness but just add a little bit of grit/texture to the guitar while also keeping it pretty smooth.
    More importantly it lets me hear the guitar without having it stand out in the mix,it lets the guitar sit a bit further back in the mix yet it pulls all this detail up,all of those extra harmonic overtones are pulled up in the guitar and it just sounds a little bit more cool/textured but again it's not an in-your-face sort of "screaming wall of guitars" effect,it's just sort of a subtle amount of saturation.
    That's the end of the examples;I hope that it's clarified what saturation is, the difference between even and odd harmonics,the difference in the non-linear behavior of the circuitry...
    The type of saturation that's induced really is all down to the specific topology of the circuit or the
    plug-in that you're using so the real take-home from this video is that you've just got to get your hands on a lot of these plugins,feed them a lot of signal and just learn what they do...it takes a bit of time to tune your ears into these things and learn the differences between all of these types of saturation...

    Musicaly speaking we will never have just one type of harmincs .Allright maybe only with some wave guide of synth but generally diatonic and nondiatonic are present in each gama (chromotic right)So from musician and producer or sound design aspect if we want a more clear ,distinct mix we should have more even harmonic and by that using tone presets that are also by natura describe as pure or clean.If we want a washy sound we use presets that are more nondiatonic so they somekind glue twourds chromatic or twourds some other kind od style or substyle.Sow generally speaking also if we want to compose a pure style from main tree of style we should look for that sound instruments combination starting from pure presets! And if we want to compose a substyle song Beganing from the main style twourds the substyle we aim too.
    I think this marked sentences wil be a great tip for people dealing understanding principle ither tech or musicians!Have fun!
