Double thanks for your reply. I had an 7 Wt Eagle Claw by Wilbur & McGill Travelmaster No. 47mu in a steel tube that I had picked up years ago at a garage sale thinking it was a soley it was a take down traveling reel but ended up using a March Brown travel rod instead and forgot all about it to you mentioned Eagle Claw and the video. . Thanks to your informative reply I was able to further my goal of learning how to cast and fish Skagit style with busting rods. So I put on a Rio Skagit rig I had and headed for or the beach. My concern about using any of my graphite rods, was overloading the rod while learning the cast, ( I have been known to shatter Spey a rod or two maxing out rod to throw a big, heavy fly a long way with a sink tip. My "warm up" cast were not pretty as the Skagit cast is simple and smooth whereas my timing was neither and an ugly site to behold,. If you don't cast before fly and leader sink below the surface just before you cast it's like pulling soaked sock out of the water with a six pound tippet. The fiberglass took my mishandling it in stride, however, when I occasionally got it right that EagleClaw had no problem in throwing the shooting head and running line as far and easily as I could have hoped. Now I am looking for something in vintage glass in the ten foot plus length. BTW I subscribed to the fiberglass web page you suggested and gave you a shout for pointing out them and the Eagle Claw fiberglass virsatiality, so thanks again Jim

Very good video. I , too, like the old Fenwick fly rods and have four; a 7'5" 6 wt.,2 8'6" 6 wt., and a 9' 8 wt. I prefer the fiberglass, as it stretches.

Fenwick did make both up locking and down locking versions of the reel seat on some models. I always liked the downlocking, reel is further back from your grip, making it easier to balance the outfit with a lighter reel (it’s just physics). Also, on the new Fenglass rods, the 4 and 5 wt versions are much nicer to fish with (the 6 and 7 weights are heavy, need heavier reel to balance out the swing weight). On the older Fenwicks, many folks will underline them slightly to increase line speed and control, and they seem to cast better with a line taper that has more weight in the front end (for example, I fish my 6 wt. FF756 with either a Gold or GPX/MPX line in a size 5). But many of the older Fenwicks would cast just about any line you put on them, lots of range to allow personal preference. Snake guides on most older Fenwicks (before the Woodstream name was added, series before “S”) were actually solid stainless steel.

I was happy to find your review online. I'd really like to find a vintage Fenwick in the condition you found yours, great find. No fishing trip video yet? I'd really like to see how differently these rods perform on the stream.

My first was a new Fenwick hmx, 6wt. It held up to chum salmon . I lost the tip getting away from a cougar . I've now got a USA made hmg 8wt, and a 4 wt iron feather mint condition

Not sure who Timber is don't post your name. Tell me more about your new Fenwick. I feel the Fenwick glass is the best fly rod every made but that's just my opinion. I hope you enjoy fly fishing as much as I do carp to white fish and that is in between.

I picked ip a couple of fiberglass rods at a Swap Shop for $25 bucks ( a 1970's fiberglass US made rod I can't identify and a Fenwick two piece from a similiar period sent some time casting and them along side two of my graphite rods of similiar weight (A March Brown and a Loomis) Wow! Was I impressed.
Shortly after, I came across the your informative video. You are right about the vintage guides causing line friction. I was using a Rio WtF 6/7 fly line (great lines) which I suspect are thicker in diameter than vintage fly lines. I modify most new rods by increasing the size of the guides, particular the tip guide as I often need to fish with long shooting heads and sink tips and in the high water winter months with a Skagit rig. As the running line and shouting heads are connected by loops it's a pain if the tip guide is too small to allow them to pass through easily.
It would be interesting to know the guide plan they used for vintage glass rods as it is likely designed for what type of lines they commonly used?
Btw Would you or anyone reading this know if in the US or UK ever made fiberglass two handed rods a,ka. Spey rods? Looking forward to your next video. Subscribed.

Stu, Here is a link that may help you identify you fly rods. Also there is a youtube video on how to make an eagle claw two hand fly rod, you can find it on youtube. I think you are right about the vintage fly line being smaller in diameter. I plan on having my next video up sometime in July going on trout fishing trip then.

great video! I wish there were more vids like this about vintage fiberglass fly rods. Looks like your vintage fenwick tube is suffering from a broken cap like they all seem to do. All mine are like that as well.
