Flat color vs rendering would be an interesting topic for a future video!
I'm a hobbyist, I only draw on paper, mostly fantasy characters and creatures ( D&D/dragons/mythology). My end goal is to be able to draw characters as I see them in my head, and be able to draw the same ones from different angles.
To reach that there are smaller goals, to improve.
- I need to fix the faulty character autonomy (the heads video you did already made an improvement), by drawing along with the Art Ritual and looking into loomis method itself. You have some good videos in separate body parts.
- I need to finish the drawings I make, and as an extension learn more about using colouring pencils.
- I need to learn how to draw backgrounds (99% of the finished characters are in empty space).
- I want to try out drawing on pc with scanned sketches, to see if I like it (I don't expect I will, cause I hate sitting at one spot for hours, and it's time I don't have), the biggest benefit for me would be to be able to work on a level of detail that I can't manage on paper (I guess I start out drawings too small), and backgrounds are probably easier to do this way than on paper. I'm afraid any photoshop-ish program will be very overwhelming with all the options of brushes, paints and pencils, and the technicalities of all the layers and settings.
Fiirst of all I need to learn some of this Enflish terminology. I have no idea what "blocking in" even means. 😅
And I need to look into that influence sheet. I love Brian Froud, the character drawings from D&D books, and Elf Quest. But not sure if those fit my style. Flat colour definitely would fit me, with my colour pencils I don't have to skill for anything more.
Rock Lords!!!!!! I've wondered for 30 years what that wee toy was I had as a kid :)
Lol, right on :)
My goal is just to start drawing again. Lost the habit a few months ago.
Your words put the future in perspective. There’s not enough time in any of our lives to become a master at every single thing, so it really is important to focus on what will get you to your end goal. And my end goal is very similar to yours. I want to tell stories through art and writing. And I need the reminder to focus on the skills that will take me to my goal. So, yes, this chat helps.
Tim McBurnie is on my Inspire Map, 100%. Along with Frazetta, Naoki Urasawa and several others.
Subscribed to your new channel also!
21:03 Thank you!
Hi Tim, discovered your channel like a week ago, and i wanted to say thanks. I have been watching your videos from the oldest and i still have lots of it but i wanted to see this one and i m astonished of how much this reasoned with me... i have been studying art for about 8 years and since 2 i have been working as a full time illustrator ( entry level stuff ) and i still struggle with pretty much all of the stuff you spoken of in the video. I wanted to say that with every one of your videos i watch i manage to clear a bit of the fog and add a bit of clarity to what i want to achieve and be in my art career. just yesterday i wal talking about your channel with my roomate! Thanks again, have a great day
This was super helpful!! Every year I try to plan how I'm going to get better and every year I stall. I definitely haven't been improving as fast I'd like and this has given me such a clear direction to go in!! Enjoying the process is something I struggle with. It's hard to enjoy things when you're struggling getting your ideas on the page. This has made me super hopeful!!
Also thank you for adding a transcript to these videos!! I love your videos but have a hard time focusing on long videos (even when I'm interested in it! Reading it was so much easier for me and allowed me to take notes at my pace! Gonna check out your other podcast videos and see if I can read through some of those.
Thanks for this video. I have been feeling very lost lately and this is just what I needed to hear. I will definitely check out your podcast channel!
I would say most of 2022 I stagnated with my art progress, nothing really seemed to work for me and I felt like I kept doing the same exercises over and over again without actually improving. It was really disheartening, until about 2 months ago I saw this video by Proko about how to draw a box in perspective without perspective lines. The way he talked about converging lines, and how to kinda 'fake' perspective, completely and absolutely blew my mind! That's why everything I tried to draw didn't look right - I kept trying to do everything with a horizon line and 2 / 3 point perspectives on my paper and everything kept coming out distorted. I realized I've been essentially drawing wrong for... probably 2 - 3 years? I went back and struggled to even draw a cube in believable perspective. But yeno what? It was perfect - I had a baseline, a place to begin, and learn the 'correct' way to do things. In 2 weeks I made more progress than the last year or more! I've been going further with that same knowledge using Cubes, Cylinders and now spheres too! Your videos are a great inspiration and keep me thinking about my art as a whole, and I really enjoy your commentary.
I didn't think there was a 'wrong' way to draw before, everyone just learned at their own pace their way, and you just had to draw more to get better right? Yes and No, I knew I had to learn the fundamentals, but how can you learn them - when you don't really understand them? Now that I know, I finally have the tools I need to improve. For the first time since I started drawing I'm not afraid of trying harder and more complex things, now I enjoy learning and trying, because I know what I need to do to get better.
Thank you so much Tim. So helpful!! I show one of the best ways to start oil painting but no one watches! 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Just starting to get my inspirations together, but yes, Tim is on it, but also guys like David Finch.
Looking forward to the content on the new channel!
This video couldn't have come a more opportune time. Thank you so much! Having been a graphic designer most of my life, I've decided to chase a dream and making a big career change "late" in life. Part of this struggle, was exactly what you touched on in this video. So I wanted to say thank you, also if you ever decide to do a limited Mentorship style thing. COUNT ME IN! lol cheers
The visual scholar what a marvellous idea subbed
I'm similar in my creative process aspirations. It's less about story for me and more about quickly communicating ideas effectively using a mix of structure and iconography. I love contrast, clear reads, iconography, composition, etc. I want to do a lot with simplicity and that's been the common thread between all of my creative endeavors. I find it extremely rewarding!
I found your channel this past month and went through a good amount of your free content. It has been great.
Also during this past month I did the influence map and have been digging more into who influenced my artistic heroes (like Bruce Timm, Mike Mignola and Frank Miller for example)
A name that kept popping up was Alex Toth, whom I had not heard of prior.
I'm pretty sure I'm a lifelong fan of Toth now.
Thanks for spreading the knowledge!
thanks! will check out!, Love the idea and your art
I guess for me when I was young at primary and high school I wanted to be a Character Designer for Animation and Video Games. But as I studied Character and other art/design learning, it made me do lots of character design work but also lots of digital painting landscape studies in my spare time. I think the goal now is to become a Visual Development or Concept Artist for Animation and maybe Video Games.
Thank you so much for this video! Excited about the new channel. As someone still working through my art fundamentals, it is a little overwhelming how many different ways there are to do something. I have a question, I really struggle with construction during my art process. I have an idea, but as soon as I start plotting vanishing points and drawing all those extension lines, it starts to feel very sterile and the whole thing falls apart. However, I feel like everyone says it's a fundamental skill. Is it ok to forgo focusing on construction, with a more "eyeball" approach regarding perspective? I feel like I can iterate much more quickly by sketching and then making adjustments until it looks right but of course, it's less precise. For reference, I feel like I am gravitating toward illustration as I love Moebius, Killian Eng & Miyazaki. Appreciate all your content!
I just cry in the corner 😅
My goal is to master figure drawing through basic shapes.
I started drawing like 2 years ago, focused hard on form, perspective and anatomy... i dont know how to render. I know how the shadows works and can draw them, but i cant crosshatch different values or mix them... i want to do comics as well, so im trying to focus on flat colors or some digital watercolor... but still... dont know if this is the right path... since i wont know how to render... dont enjoy it either. Dont want to have a big hole on my knowledge :S...
I tried... easier said than done... 😞
If you're still breathing, you still have time.
first
i really like what you said here about direction, i am kinda lost in knowing were i want to go , and this helps me try to peace things together a bit more, it would be really cool to have a discord .
also one thing i would love is to be able to render too. although i am still lost in goals.
