    *Life’s Anecdotes…and the Jazz Antidote*
*(Healing of Spirit w/ Wycliffe Gordon & Adrian Cunningham)* 🎼🎹🙌🏽🌎🎷
0:00 Spillin’ the Tea (orig. comp. Emmet Cohen)
    7:54 Introduction of the Band
10:20 It Don’t Mean A Thing - (If it Ain’t Got that Swing) (Duke Ellington, lyr. Irving Mills)
24:01 On The Sunny Side of the Street (Fats Waller, Jimmy McHugh; lyr. Dorothy Fields)
    34:32 Impressions (John Coltrane)
    47:19 Lotus Blossom (Billy Strayhorn)
58:34 Rocking Chair (Hoagy Carmichael) - ft. Wycliffe Gordon & A. Cunningham, (trumpet & clarinet; vocals)
1:06:57 Tricotism (Oscar Pettiford) - ft. Russell Hall, bass
1:17:07 Blue ‘n’ Boogie (Dizzy Gillespie, Frank Paparelli)
1:31:42 America the Beautiful (tradt’l hymn - Samuel Ward; lyr. Katharine Lee Bates)
1:36:54 Just A Closer Walk With Thee (tradt’l gospel)
1:42:24 Down By the Riverside - (Ain’t Gonna Study War No More) (tradt’l African-American spiritual)
*Man, to be alive in this moment…*
This intersection of history endures as one of the most strenuous in modern times.
*And over the course of 75 weeks (& beyond) the trio’s momentum and musicianship have, both, healed & astounded us.*
Jazz family, last night we experienced a powerful uplift from Down South & Down Under:
(Sons of Waynesboro, Georgia, & Sydney, Australia) - *Wycliffe Gordon & Adrian Cunningham, delivered a treasury of jazz anthems that spoke to our souls.*
Their instruments captured moments of elation and lament that surpass the human voice.
*Wycliffe is one formidable cat that wastes no time in spitting the truth from his trombone.*
His facility is matched by *Adrian’s hipness and beautifully-crafted cascades on tenor sax & clarinet.*
*You don’t study this language…You live it.*
Every wail, growl, and melodic passage assumes *sacred significance* when you know what the hell you are playing for:
*The times that we live in mirror the angst, injustice, & confusion of values, that faced the forebears of this music.*
We follow the footsteps & stories that are, too, painfully familiar.
*The mastery & dedication of Emmet Cohen, Russell Hall, and Kyle Poole remind us of our precious capacity to create change.*
But we are committing the same tragic errors.-
America, my love, you bear many wounds yet you continue to inflict them:
You’ve been playing the wrong riff, baby. Forcing a wrong note does not make the delusion disappear.
    - I’m just Spillin’ the Tea here…
*The jazz giants always knew this to be true:* Their music underscored the Black American experience & selflessly gave voice to a global one.
Last night, we all found ourselves ‘going to church’ - *If this was solely about religious affiliation, we would not feel the universal pull towards a higher possibility of life.*
*EACH of us, from all traditions, aspire towards the same goals - security, freedom, dignity.*
May we all lay our burdens down and heal.
Love, blessings, & Shalom, jazz family…and Happy Thanksgiving 🍁🌎🙏🏽

Mr. Gordon is such a joy to hear. His style is so soulful and even his simplest phrases are full of nuance of emotion.
Also, I do not hear enough people talking about Kyle Poole. He is incredible. It's like he know's what the soloist is going to play before they do. Absolutely incredible.

HI Emmet, So you really have something wonderful with "Live from Emmet's place. I feel compelled to point out
that the one instrument that has not graced your stage is the Baritone sax! There is a man in town who is not only melodic
on this great horn, (very unusual), but also swings like mad. I'm sure you must know him, or even played with him.
His name of course is Jason Marshall. Please Emmet, give him a call. Regards, John D.

      Bruce Johnstone

    • @manzajazz9025
      @manzajazz9025 2 года назад +3

@@jazzbirdbecky HI Becky, Absolutely Bruce Johnston. I was born, and lived in London most of my life, except for the
last 16 years in Spain. When Maynard Ferguson moved to the UK. in the late 60s for a few years, he used to have a
monthly gig at London's famous "100" jazz club, (gone now). You could take a chair and sit right up to the bandstand,
no reservations needed. As you can imagine, this was a very exciting time for me, (a bit like Tuesday mornings, watching the latest "live at Emmet's). Anyway, Maynard had a full size big band, (5 saxes etc.) many of the top British jazz men, and he was
just getting into funky-soul jazz. Around early 1970, there were two new faces in the sax section, on tenor was Brian Smith,
a tremendous player, and on baritone, his compatriot from New Zealand, the very great Bruce Johnston, both unknown at
that time. Bruce was featured a lot, including a tune written for him, "Stay loose with Bruce". He really knew how to play to
the crowd. Fantastic memories, and I believe he was or still is, teaching in NY. Yes, get Bruce Johnston!
I suspect most readers of this have never heard of Bruce Johnston, sad. Regards, John D.

Man, I don't know. I see some other requests for Wynton too, and I don't think you could get that. They're just so hard to get - wynton is ridiculously high-profile, much more than even Wycliffe, and as far as I know Ryan is still living in Cedar Rapids. Not terribly accessible, although I guess they got that Australian guy there.
