Yeah, it's kinda fun watching him playing Captain Smith on the Titanic- although he denied that, too! Oh well, the Smoking Gun tape came out and that was that.
I'm a liberal Democrat, but I always kind of liked this guy for some strange reason. Imagine agreeing to an interview with Mike Wallace at that period in history!
General Haig is only 49 years old here. He was promoted to 4 star general directly from 2 star general. He was a serious man who thought of President Nixon as his commanding officer. This had to be an extremely difficult period for him in terms of balancing his loyalties between the Constitution and the President. Although I think his defense of Nixon was misplaced I do think Gen Haig was an honorable person.
I worked for this great man and blessed to been his friend! I was so honored to receive a masters degree in “ The Haig Brigade” in 1988 and the forigen policy education I received was better than getting a degree from Georgetown! Both General Haig and Mrs Pat were the kindest folks on earth!
There are three branches of the government, where in the constitution does it say the leader of the executive branch can't tell those under him what to do?
Would it be against the constitution for an AG to tell the FBI to not investigate something? Would it be against the constitution for the FBI director to tell his agents to not investigate something?
The question Wallace should have asked this man is " Mr Haig how many coffins does it take to transport one dead man from Andrews AFB to the Bethesda Medical Center (with a stopover at Walter Reed"?
That is true but their own best interests were to figure the best and most honorable way out of the mess they had created. I think they all saw the handwriting on the wall and they were just trying to hold things together and put on a brave face until the inevitable resignation.
Cool-headed here but lost all composure during the attempt on Reagan's life in '81! As secretary of state he misstated that position was third in line & told the nation "I'm in charge here @the White House!" A Soviet plot was the main rationale for the shooting.
Haig spun this best he could, but if you listen carefully, if you're keenly aware.... it's obvious he knew that Nixon would be exiting in less than 2 weeks.
Compared to the crimes and scandals of most of Mr. Nixon's successors on both sides of the political aisles, (with the exceptions of Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter) Watergate was a lame college prank gone awry.

I LOVE these old clips. More, please
Particularly interesting in the context of taking place one week before Nixon’s resignation.

General Haig was the one who had to have President Nixon sign his letter of resignation, tough moment but he was country first
😂😂😂🛸

Mike Wallace was one member of the press who Richard Nixon actually respected. Mr. Wallace was a man of integrity.

I AM IN CHARGE
Another Mike Wallace gem.
He was a true great, here in UK, too.
Expert dissembling from General Haig
Why would Haig do this interview, knowing Nixon was finished and that Wallace would hammer him?
Haig loved the attention
He also said he was in control of the White House after Reagan got shot. 🤦🏼♂️
He was told to. He’s a military man. He salutes smartly and follows orders.
A fascinating interview. If you read "The Final Days" by Woodward and Bernstein you marvel at all that Haig had to handle.
Read the book "Silent Coup" for all the true facts. It is a great read.
Mike Wallace, The GOAT of investigative broadcast journalists.
The question Wallace should have asked this man is " Mr Haig how many coffins does it take to transport one dead man from Andrews AFB to the Bethesda Medical Center (with a stopover at Walter Reed"?
These guys only had their own interests at heart.

So true!! Read the book "Silent Coup" for all the true facts. It is a great read.

I remember people saying that the shots fired at Reagan came from "the Bushy Knoll" . . .
GREAT INTERVIEW & EVEN BETTER INTERVIEWER (WHEN YOUNGER).. GREAT CITATIONS OF BASIC DATA & GALLUP POLL STATISTICS!.. 😃😃😃👏👏👏👍👍👍👍
Haig spun this best he could, but if you listen carefully, if you're keenly aware.... it's obvious he knew that Nixon would be exiting in less than 2 weeks.
I'm in charge
IM IN CONTROL
I know you work for the CIA
They wouldn't have you in the maffIA
Deep Throat himself.
Yup! Read the book "Silent Coup" for all the true facts. It is a great read.
Long live Sir Richard Nixon s and Gen Alexander Haig s legacy ❤😊😊😊😊
Homer simpson wanted him for president in 1988
Me too.

So 60 minutes admits they are liberals by playing this during the trump hearing
They are playing these interviews because June 17 is the 50th anniversary of the burglary at the Watergate office building. smh

Smart thing to do. Shows how back in the day the Republican Party we're mostly honorable unlike today's corrupt Republican Party.
What the hell is going on with Al's right eyebrow??
