I'm just a hobbyist so Couldnt justify the sig but blown away and couldnt be happier with the Rascal. Significantly more diverse and I was happy to discover I could get some Al Cisneros style tones out of it as well.
So the Fender costs at least four times as much as the Rascal but based on your excellent comparison the Rascal sounds at least four times as good as the Fender. The bridge pickup of the Fender sounds way too thin, like it should be on a 6 string electric guitar, not on a bass. The Rascal blows the Fender away in all configurations and tone settings. Plus: I haven't got a freaking clue who Mike Kerr is. I'll take the Rascal Bass.
I'm normally a flats and fingers player. I am in a fuzz and flat picked bass situation, so I picked up a Rascal after watching several reviews. The Rascal suits me well for flat picking, its unique ergonomics and further up the body bridge placement help this a bunch. I did swap strings to the bottom 4 of a CME LaBella Chicago Style Pure Nickel Bass VI set and do like slight eq change they provide.
I had the option of the Rascal vs a Tokai Jazz. I went with the Tokai and am also very happy and have already recorded with it haha, but I am really wishing I went for the Rascal..
First off, nice haircut. Secondly, it's quite amazing how much the Rascal smokes the Fender pretty consistently across the board. The Rascal was really built to be built different lmao.
Lol thanks! I hate it sometimes but at least it’s growing rather fast! I was impressed with the Rascal with effects, really loved that bottom end it delivered.
The Kerr bass has a little more mids, but I like the round sound of the Squire. Squire killed it with this bass, and they aways kill it on their Paranormal series.
If I’m not mistaken, isn’t that the really thick 70s jazz neck? U profile? If so. That’s my favorite one. I’m curious how it’s holding up, stability wise.
Feel like the Kerr sig is really for Royal Blood fans trying to recreate that sound. Definitely not as versatile since it has to suit his playing style and rig. That rascal sounded like an every-man bass with some versatility! Great value!
Bravo SJMToo bad about the MK. It's got room for another WRHB at the neck🎸🔈Nice comparo👍🔔🤳I just ordered a green Rascal from GC. Apparently the Rascal hasn't been in demand here in Jax Florida. I can't wait to get it. I'm not a Bass player✌️😎☯️
Good stuff!!! I wanted both basses when they came out. I was able to play them both and there is something ergonomically uncomfortable to me with the Rascal bass. So I decided to wait for a used Mike Kerr and got lucky and snagged one for $900 on Reverb. I like it so far but I feel like I may end up modding it eventually.
WOW! You definitely got a deal on the Mike Kerr. I agree with the ergonomics of the Rascal, it’s different for sure. Good luck with your mod if you ever do go that route
I got the green rascal and changed the pickguard to a black pearloid and I love it! I'm a huge Royal Blood fan as well though. Through my work I was able to get the Mike Kerr Jaguar new for a little over $1000 but I have a lot of pedals that work well with it. So I ended getting both and with what I saved and when down to Tulsa and saw Royal Blood but I'm a die hard that you mentioned 😂
I did have a misaligned g string on the first one and I exchanged it and got one that the production was almost perfect on and helped everything sound better
Guys help me out, i really like the sound of these, especially the rascal, but theres 2 problems, i want a long scale and i want a light bass, 7.5lbs rather than 9. But how can i custom one to sound like these? A big factor is the humbucker pick ups right? If i put these type of pick ups on a lighter long scale id get that big growling crunch? How do i do this please help 😅
Get an Epiphone EB-3. It’s got the fat mud-bucker in the neck position and a smaller, tinnier pickup at the bridge, just like the Mike Kerr (or, rather, the Mike Kerr has the EB-3 pickup selection… but the EB-3 pickups are closer to the neck and bridge, respectively). That’s where you’ll get that Deep Purple overdriven sound out of a full-scale bass.
I have the Rascal. It’s just as good as he says. I also grabbed the 40th Anniversary Gold P and Jazz basses, a CV Mustang and I ordered the Antigua P-Bass… And what does Squier go and do? Drop the 6 string Jazz. I have been BEGGING them for YEARS to just take the CNC file from the Steve Bailey bass and bring it to China. I guess they brought it to Indonesia as a trial run, and considering the pre-orders are SOLD OUT… I’m hoping they get the picture and expand it into both Classic Vibe and Fretless models. Because you know GD well I’m getting two and Jaco-ing the second one, all the way down to the marine epoxy.
Hey Sono! I just got my replacement Mike Kerr bass( remember I got one with a dead neck pickup) seems like they fixed their bridge humbucker issues. Volume is even through each string, I'll have to do more testing . But this was a great comparison, I think you said it perfectly. Each have different characteristics and money wise, the Rascal kills for the price. The Kerr should've been a lot less but I'm a huge RB fan so I'm going to keep mine regardless.
I honestly felt a bit attached to the Mike Kerr bass despite its issues. If only it was cheaper, it would’ve been a keeper to fix the problems myself. If I find one used at a good price, I’ll buy it up 😅 appreciate your comment and happy to hear about your Mike Kerr bass 🤘🏽
@@sonojon0 Agreed! The price still bothers me by about $400/$500 over. And to have to make fixes and adjustments on top of it. Maybe you can score it used eventually.
@@JennyMayUSAF I would hope so. My initial MK bass from Sweetwater had a dead middle pickup and only the bridge one worked. It was very brittle and weak but I got my replacement bass a week ago & the bridge pickup sounds clear with even volume on the G string where many were having problems.
the fender sounds much better in every example, and also looks much more like a shortscale - and i say that having just bought a rascal! i guess this is one situation where you do actually get what you pay for...
The necks do not compare, the signature is top tier. the rascal bass is good value, great pickups but it is just too heavy! I get that is big for a reason, so it doesn't look odd on stage with the shorter scale. You don't want your daddy guitar to look like a mommy guitar! I tried both and went with the Jaguar Affinity H! Because; I want something light, I'm getting old. I want something to modify, even the rascal doesnt NEED anything. I want a maple fingerboard. Dont play enough to justify the mike kerr. So the affinity H in lake placid blue got; a black high mass bridge, black 'jazz bass inlay' stickers, Hipshot D tuner, 4 wire Music man pickup with push/pull for series/parallel. It Gets the chefs kiss now (for half the price of rascal)

0:30 Breaking out the Death From Above riffs on the Royal Blood bass, lol I love it

The guy from Royal Blood. No reason to pay extra for his name.
We can not be dissing Mike Kerr though you should hear how he plays

I bought the Rascal Bass, best bass for under 500! Already recorded with it. It’s fantastic!!

I got a limited shell pink rascal when they were on sale for 360$ new… It was a great purchase, no regrets. I love the bridge pick up
Nice score! I believe they’re Sold Out now. Definitely a keeper now! Congrats again, I love the bridge pickup on the Rascal too!
I have a rascal on order but always wanted the Kerr spesh. This is great 😅
How did the volume compare on these? I know the Kerr bass runs pretty hot

I wonder if the MK buyer would mind having a Squire WRHB on it?? It sure would be Kool to have a Fender pickup on the Rascal👍😁🏈
I liked the Rascal better in every position except the neck. And it was still damn close.

Nice comparison video. How would you compare the Mexican build quality of the Kerr to the Chinese build quality of the Rascal?
It’s night and day between the two although the quality was a bit better in some areas like the neck on the Mexican build quality than the Rascal

Is the bridge pickup issue something you can contact Fender about? Mine is pretty weak…

Thank you! Thanks to you I bought a new paranormal yesterday- even though the Mike Kerr was super seductive. Now what to do with the 1k I saved…
@@virginiawerewoolf Sounds like you need a pedalboard and some pedals to fill up that 1k spot 😅
Congrats! 🎉
Rascal all the way. Like to see this bass up against a starcaster bass.
That’d be siiick if I ever come across a Starcaster!
What pedals do you use in the comparison?
Source Audio Aftershock and EHX Pitchfork in the P5 position, blend knob all the way up

Rascal 🙌🏼
💯
I like the rascal more..

Lol this vid is guna piss the people who bought mike kerrs model off lol great comparison!
The Squier just sounds better
It crushes it!! 🤙🏾
Hair cut?
Yea.. 😂😰
That Wascally Wabbit has pulled one over on Fender Dudd, er, Dender Fudd. That bridge pickup on the Kerr sounds crap.
Such a shame how the Dudder couldn’t pull its weight 😅
For the first time ever Squier sounds better than Fender
Hmmmmmm, I liked the sounds of the Mike Kerr better.
Rascal is far better, the sig bass is bollocks
The Fender is so noisy. It sounds awful. Not worth a $1500 price tag.
Sadly Kerr’s bridge pickup still sucks
On point 😂💯

both basses are way too heavy for a short scale bass. Junk.
