Nice video, Phil. I have 100s of hand picked Whiting capes and saddles - wet, dry, Cd'L, Streamer/salt, etc.
Remembering the 'olden days' of dry fly necks, when 2 hackles were required to tie one fly, my Whitings necks & saddles are personal treasures.

To be honest, I buy mostly pro grade dry fly capes because if I wanted a hackle longer than the superb feathers Whiting puts out I will buy a half saddle. The feathers on a Whiting pro cape are longer than any other hackles available to me.I use india and chinese on large salmon flies because of the length of the individual barbles, if I want a cock feather. Whiting is the bomb. All the best and thanks for the video. I am happy I had a large selection to choose from when I bought my feathers. Unfortunately, I bought most of mine during the hair feather craze and the cost has gone down since then. All the best and keep the information coming. Sean

I need another champagne silver grade. Miss the days when Whiting had a rep in the southeast.

recently i purchased some discounted METZ - there is no quality control with METZ. one of the necks a 1 grade was small short soft feathers AND STILL HAD FAT ON THE SKIN!!! - i have a #3 metz from the late 70's that is way way better. In a time when many can not get to a fly shop - or have to order on line - we depend on the grading and quality control. Will never buy or even bother to look at a METZ again.

I'm sure it was just a fluke. Metz is fine.
And I hear you about not being able to get to a shop. The closest one to me is 200 miles away. Sucks. You absolutely HAVE to depend on the shops you order from, and that, I've found more than a few times, doesn't always work in your favor. It's like they blindly grab at whatever is close and throw it in an envelope or box. No inspection. No consideration. No cares at all for what they're doing.
Wish I had the means to open my own shop.

Too bad this is years old. I'd have had you ask them to make more in sizes 8-12. Impossible to find these days. Everyone says they have gone mostly into midge sizes as of late. And that sucks. I need 8s, and 10s.

i saw in a video or read somewhere that there is a "bit of a crisis" at Whiting because one of the colors has bred out all bigger sizes and it's very hard to find anything bigger than 16 on the capes. I want to say it was brown but I dunno for sure. Actually I remember where I read it - Feather Emporium website.
