    +Grace Wilson When you play records now to they sound different? We would definitely recommend cleaning the needle off (brushing it). If your records sound fine you probably didn't bend the needle. If you did in fact bend it, you can always replace the needle (stylus). It usually isn't that expensive and they wear out over time anyway, so if you've used it a lot it might be time to replace it.

  • @japaboy360
    @japaboy360 9 лет назад +12

    Ideally, certain recommendations of needles, preamps, and turntables at three different price points (low, mid, and high) would be great. Thanks for the video by the way!

  • @Zen5656
    @Zen5656 9 лет назад +34

    Very cool video!
    Things you maybe forgot to mention: use a clean slipmats as it also collects dust over the years. I am not a big fan of the carbon fibre brush/wiping method as it also pushes stuff deeper into the groove. Sometimes just blowing helps (do not spit!). Also some record stores now offer you a professonal cleaning with a expensive machine for just one dollar, maybe consider that when digging the rare records ;) AND use please inner sleeves with plastic afterwards. The do not become sandpaper like the paper inner sleeves. And it does not make sense to put your records back into the old dusty sleeve after cleaning right? ;)
    Thanks!

  • @davidlane1169
    @davidlane1169 2 года назад +8

    It's critical to keep them as spotless as possible. I use heavy vinyl outers & wax paper inserts to stop ALL current album cover shadowing that most certainly occurs with bare cardboard covers. One needs to find a record vacumn machine, then chase down a zerostat to use with it. Perfect combo, use them both every single play.

  • @fortherecord1569
    @fortherecord1569 8 лет назад +269

    Good video. Great tips... acting, not so much ;) The only thing I'd suggest is to AVOID paper sleeves. Replace them with proper anti-static sleeves. Those rough paper ones scrape/scuff the record a bit every time you put it in or take it out.

    • @beatleman69
      @beatleman69 6 лет назад +7

      For the Record I agree, I use mobile fidelity inner sleeves. I sleeve the album jacket and the put my album outside the jacket to prevent ring wear.

    • @vintagevinylvets1187
      @vintagevinylvets1187 6 лет назад

      For the Record Totally agree! We use MoFi polyliners or DiscKeepers inner sleeves. No scuffing nor create static.

    • @davidlane1169

      Paper's not so bad used with wax paper inserts, vinyl/wax insert/paper sleeve/cardboard cover/heavy vinyl outer bag. Four layers for perfection, even your paper sleeves stop tearing on the seams once one introduces the wax inserts. 30 to 50 seconds in the rec-o-vac, spinning in the machine while the zerostat does its business, perfection static free to platter.

    @3:00 into the video, you mentioned that one should use paper sleeves. if your record didn't come with one.
    I disagree. Paper sleeves shed paper fibers that get into the grooves of the LP, and they can even scratch records. Even if your record came with paper sleeves, they should be replaced immediately using high-density polyethylene like those offered by MoFi (and others). These are sometimes called rice paper sleeves. Personally, I use Sleeve City's "Diskeeper" sleeves.
    Thanks.

      @@86forever Start with a good cleaning. Use a carbon fiber brush to whisk away any debris resting on the surface of the record, then use a soft, lint free cloth and a reputable cleaning solution to clean the record in a circular clockwise motion. If the skipping continues, check to see if something is stuck inside of the groove. If you have a turntable with a weight on the back of the tone arm, make sure it is properly balanced. If the tone arm is balanced, if nothing is lodged into the groove and it continues to skip after a good cleaning, the record is probably defective.
      You may want to consider replacing the inner sleeves with fresh paper sleeves or better yet, Mobile Fidelity Inner Sleeves, especially if any of the inner sleeves are made of cheap plastic. If any of the original inner sleeves have artwork or lyrics printed on them, save them, especially if you want them to maintain their value. If the covers are still in good shape, we also recommend purchasing some plastic outer sleeves for protection.

I use a flat paint edging pad, (Whizz Applicators paint edging pad) which has hundreds of thousands of soft-yet-firm micro bristles on them to remove embedded grime. The bristles are fine and firm enough to clean out the groove and soft enough not to damage the record. They scrub in one direction and wipe in the other.

    Sebastian Spatafore Sounds like you've had a bad experience with microfiber! That could be attributed to a few things: cheap, poorly made micro fiber cloths; dirty cloths; overheating the cloth when laundering it (which makes the fibers brittle). As you mentioned, record cleaning machines are also a great option, but at $200 could be a bigger investment than some folks are looking to make.

    Cleaning up an abandoned house and I found a stacked set of vinyl records in a rotted cardboard box on the porch. I wanted to cry. Out of 40 plus albums only 2 of the covers were in okay condition. Couple of the albums were broken. Most are from the 70s and a lot of motown. Found Michael Jackson off the wall too and a few others that I recognize. I hope that they can be saved but something tells me most will end up as an upcycle craft supply. I treat my vinyl like gold. Can't believe someone just left them on a porch. :(

    I found my parents old records in the loft while getting the Christmas tree for them soo they are pretty dusty! Might take a while to get them cleaned.. I was just going to use a cloth and warm water.. I guess I could get a brush

    +Damien Nguyen It sounds like the record might be a 45 and your turntable is set to 33 1/3rpm. If that isn't it then perhaps something is wrong with your belt. It might need to be replaced. Is it a vintage turntable or a new one?

      Obviously, this is not an option for everyone. But what do you think of those $750.-$1,000. wet washing record machines?

    Just a heads up on phono cartridge maintenance. Plan on once or twice a year inspections, especially if one plays many records. FYI, a typical quality cartridge runs between two & four hundred for better than average. More expensive is commonplace, & yeah, it does suck. Replace as needed. The fun is when one finds out there's a full half dozen mounting formulas, all different & all which claim the correct alignment. I keep two or three different gauges just because sometimes you'll need another solution other than the one you'd found originally. Royal pain in our ass! Why I believe you'd have to be beyond crazy to collect vinyl but to each their own...

    For anyone watching today, I would not recommend keeping the inner paper sleeves as mentioned around 2:56. Paper sleeves can cause static electricity when pulling your vinyl in and out of the sleeve and can damage your records over time. I would highly recommend buying inner and outer sleeves for the best long term protection! :)
