Easily the best Christmas song of all time none of the sickly sweet usual nonsense but a glimpse into what a lot of relationships are really like at each others throats at times but the love is still there
The greatest Christmas song of all time. An Irish couple emigrate to NY with issues but despite it all they still feel the love on Christmas Day. I love it when this song is played amongst friends and in my local pub. We all know pretty much everyone has a problem they are dealing with but we can get together and enjoy the moment. It's a Christmas Song about reality, hence why it's so special. Accept your problems but still rejoice the moment. The beautiful Irish tones only enhance it. Simply beautiful and real.
They were an Anglo Irish band. Many of the members were Irish, and the lead singer Shane McGowan was Irish although born in Kent to Irish parents and moved to Tipperary. The bands musical style is Punk fused with Traditional Irish music, which is seen in the array of traditional Irish Instruments. Even the bands name is the Pogues, which is an anglicisation of the Gaelic Pog mo thoin, which is pretty big hint as to their identity. @@dickwilliam3793

@@dickwilliam3793the story of the song is about a Irish couple from the west of Ireland in new york and they aren't the nicest to each other. But care about each other too. And the nypd choir singing "Galway Bay " even though they didn't. It's implied. And the f word is old Irish slang for someone who is lazy
I met someone years ago who promised me the world of promises and I never saw 1 of them in 8yrs of marriage it was all about him and what he wanted. I ended the marriage 9 yrs ago and I've been single since. Its been as stressful as feck but I've got myself a lovely little flat which I have renovated by myself. He is a multi tradesman so i learned a lot. We spk occasionally and I've had the pleasure of telling him what I've done without any help. Instead of praising me and saying I'm proud of you, he said i taught you well didn't i. My reply was you didn't teach me anything you just didnt notice me, but i was always watching. Tossa. If he could see my flat now 😂 I've got everything I've ever wanted. He never will, and wants me back 😂
This poem/song is about loyalty, love, sticking together through thick and thin, and through young dreams shattered, and human frailty. Having someone there to pick up your broken pieces every time. There's always music and hope - Sinatra, Broadway, and the choir and crowd singing. If that isn't real love, what is? One of the most beautiful love songs/poems ever composed, I think. Shane died recently, funeral in rural Ireland, attended by real artists from around the world. Nick Cave sang my favourite -- Rainy Night in Soho. Try it and the original Shane, if you like poetry at all --- imagine being "The Measure of My Dreams" to someone. He's talking about their dreams as a couple when they started out in their relationship which by now was on rocky ground and he was feeling sorry for himself and drinking to hide from the truth.

In spite of the problems they had, it's still a love song.

Yes. Good point. (I saw some dumb comments above saying "you have to be Irish to understand it." lol, really.)
