I am certain the lyrics aren't meant to be insulting to the American people in general. It's a fear that the biggest superpower in the world might be a little bit, frankly, crass in its attitude toward other nations, toward the different cultures and the environment we all live in. America can feel overpowering. I lived in the US for many years. I experienced an insularity there that surprised me at first. There was no interest in - or news coverage of - any event or politics outside of the US, unless there was some horrific disaster overseas. With a few brilliant exceptions, it felt like dumbing down was the norm. Just to make it clear before any potential replies: while I lived in the US, I worked, paid taxes, paid for health care, and took nothing. The line at the end of the song isn't "Blood is in America", it's "God is an American. GOD is an American." People are sometimes afraid of America and, therefore, Americans. Russia was afraid for decades. Maybe that's why they're extremely antsy. As a child in the 1980s, I was afraid that the US would start a nuclear war. David Bowie was occasionally controversial and always intelligent, rarely political. He was a marvel, really, one of a kind of his generation, of his century. Beating metal objects (like garbage cans) against each other and incorporating it into the music was indeed a part of early industrial like this first NIN album. A good contrast with the synth heavy compositions. As for the lyrical content industrial is consistently dark and deranged. The live version of Gave Up on the NIN channel is simply vicious and a good choice for a reaction.

Idk if you know this man, but a lot of music on YT doesn't have actual lyrics in the closed caption option. Some artists take time to put it there, others don't. When you do the auto generated it's just a computer tool trying to decipher the sounds and convert it to text. It works fine on most things, but for music it doesn't understand the difference between a beat and a human voice. If you want lyrics, you gotta pull up Genius or another lyric site. edit: Footwork dirty is what he says. He's pretending he's in the ring boxing against his depression in this song. Its just a track about being gross. Not taking care of yourself or cleaning your bathtub. Talking about people who have demons in them who cause shit like depression or other stuff that keeps you from basic self and home care. I think you nailed it about this song's meaning (at least, its first meaning) : it's a depiction of how a foreigner can feel about the U.S., based on what we know of your country through the media (news, documentaries, films, series, Internet posts, etc...), which focus almost all the time on violence. From the outside, your country was born out of violence, grew up in violence and still lives in violence, both physical (mass shootings, gangs, police abuse, heists, etc...) and social (wealth inequality, health insecurity, precariousness on all levels...). From this side of Europe, your country (and its inhabitants) is likely to scare most people. We know we've got the same problems as you (probably not as much, though), but the way they are depicted by the media just put them on another level completely! Oh, and also : with Bowie, there's always a second (or sometimes a third, fourth...) signification : in this case, it's all in the last sentence of the song "God is an american". If God is an american, and you're afraid of americans, then, you're afraid of God... Take care (and keep digging : the Bowie rabbit hole is full of surprises for those who keep their mind alert :D).
