0:04 I thought my tendies were ready
I came to this review from your last, with the manual. Seems like you're way more content with the 6spd manual, which is what I just ordered. Thanks again for the content.
Good review nice to see how they drive on the road I don’t see too many on-road Tacoma reviews this really gives you an idea of how the transmission really behaves. Sounds like a lot of people prefer the older generation 5 speed.
Regearing really helps with these trucks. The 4.30 is much better than the stock 3.91. Up to 4.88 will make a huge positive impact on drivability though.
CVT on a Truck
Me: wait that's illegal
ikr, just comes to show you can't take everything these RUclips journalists say but with a grain of salt
Keep up the good work!
Literally my favorite car reviewer!
I are swole as hell bro
This channel is amazing
I had a 2017 for a year, the terrible gearing, trans and lack of torque wore on me at elevation here in Colorado. Final straw was the rear drums locking up after going through a car wash, not once, not twice but 3 separate times. Two of those times required a tow truck.
The “charming old school truck it always has been” priced like a Mercedes.
Dude, these light offroading videos of yours are so satisfying...I saw the rav 4 video and i have become an instant fan
Keep up the good work 👍
I also like them too. But the gladiator is much better on the trails rather than the f250.
Had my Tacoma for almost 3 years. The transmission gets better once it learns your driving habits. But I would have to agree, it’s a hot mess when you first get in to one. You have to adjust your driving style lol. The only truck I wish they had paddle shifters in so you just easily manually shift it at all times. Other than that, a fantastic truck. 35k worry free miles.
I have 23 Taco, last year of V6 and its great.
Beautiful truck love it
Hope to see a 2020 Manual Tacoma Reviewed!
Great truck!
Very beautiful design
Looks good!!
Thank you!!
please do a chevy blazer or trailblazer in the future i’m very interested in your thoughts on those vehicles
You litterly make me wanna buy every car u review
Ha
I have 2018 tacoma trd offroad 6spd manual. The thing with the engines narrow power band (90s honda like) is it never has the right gear. It has a bunch of small issues but overall I like the size and manoeuvrability of it.
This is far less refined relative to what was shown with the ridgeline bell but seems useful for off-roading given the suspension dynamics
Manual Tacomas are the way to go! Avoid the JBL, skip the TRD skid plate and TRD exhaust, have the dealer turn the grill sensor to default in the off position, enjoy it!
You mentioning the funkiness of the transmission resonated with me. The gearing in my 22' camry fwd with the 4cyl and the 8 speed is so similar in terms of how it downshifts more than you'd like at times. It either gives you just a little power or all the power, but it's tough to get in between. I'll be accelerating too slow and if I breathe on the throttle just a tiny bit too much to increase acceleration, it'll jerk, try to snap your neck and you notice you're at 6200 RPMS for no reason.
that’s how it is in my 6 speed malibu. If you’re at cruising speed and want more power than 5th will give, 4th is a massive jump. Or it’ll kick to 3rd and give you whiplash.
@raider4394 haha my first car was a 2011 Malibu. Idk about whiplash with its 9 second + 0 - 60 time that made it rough merging on to the highway here in NJ and CT, but that transmission was complete garbage lmao.
@@onfootbassin Lol whiplash in that it shifts hard.
Mine is like 7-7.5 to 60 but still definitely not a race car
This is why i prefer manual vehicles. I'm glad here in Africa they provide manual trucks. The automatic transmission is always hunting for gears. I totally agree with you Chris that a hybrid Tacoma should be made available soon. Maybe by 2025 Tacoma will be available with it but it'll probably be for the American market cause here in Africa we don't seem to have lots of issues with vehicles with engines and no hybrid systems. But yea this Tacoma is always hunting for gears for years. The engine is pretty good but the manual is better for towing. This trans isn't giving enough torque and its afraid of 5th gear...odd.
Yes! A Tacoma. Thanks Chris. What's next the ranger?
And I'm talking about the dual cab fully loaded ranger. I think you guys in the US will have a thunder version of the ranger soon unless I'm wrong.
I hope so
Toyota the way to go
Nice! I have a 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport so its cool seeing videos about these trucks lol
The truck is worth every penny, however, I do agree with some people that the MSRP is a bit too high, especially on the TRD Off-Road and Limited
2016-2019 automatic transmission is a disaster, at least the 2020 is a little bit better
Its easy to find things to complain about when you know it won’t ever break down with proper maintenance tho 😂
I’d still buy this over any of the competition
Idk honestly I currently drive a Ford ranger 07 and will this Tacoma looks good and seems likes it drives fairly smooth to me. idk if it's because I'm used to older vehicles but the Tacoma looks like a good truck. I feel like everyone over criticizes and Netpicks on the Tacoma to much.
Great trucks but I don't see how it ever made it out of the testing phase with that gear ratio. Regearing the automatic transmission is an absolute game changer for that vehicle.
I just wish the backseats got some air. There's a lack of vents/fans blowing air back there.
I have a 2008 Tacoma 4 cyl 4x4 reg cab. Seems to fit the “taco” namesake more than this one does. I hope Toyota invests in the next gen model.
Toyota should put the 2020 Highlander V6 and 8 speed auto in the Tacoma because it makes more horsepower but a little less torque than the current one plus it has a better transmission too
Bro you forgot to clack your heels when getting into the back seat what were you thinking
I have a 2018 TRD off road. The transmission issue isn’t that big of a deal, to me. Rarely does it annoy me. It’s far from perfect, but it’s a great truck. $47K is steep, though! At that price I might second guess.
Are you getting your hands on the amg c63 the other guy did on winding road?
for the gear hunting, get your dealership to upgrade the software. It may or may not help. I got 2 friends, 1 said it helped but the other 1 didn't.
Toyota is the best
I have that exact truck…2020 trd off road. Also I live Q mile from your test site. I drive that area all the time. Northville, MI! I don’t have the pleather seats with the heated ass warmers, or the JBL speakers. The truck has some quirks that make me say hummmm at times. I got the 6 foot bed and a high topper for the back. It is now an RV for quick getaways or just work day naps when I get them. Do you recommend any shops for aftermarket upgrades in our area?
I understand these will hold their value better than pretty much any other truck but I still couldn't swallow a 40k plus MSRP for a midsize truck. I do really like that color though.
You came to the same conclusion that I did, that automatic transmission is annoying as hell. Which is why I got the off-road with the manual. The 2021 be here mid November. Can’t wait. But you can’t get the JBL sound system with the manual. So there’s no point in getting the leather or premium upgrade. So you just go and get an aftermarket upgrade of the speakers And maybe a preamp.
Priced about 10k too high. I’d pay 37 for that specific truck.
They are priced at 37k with only 10k miles. Basically brand new.
Last year i bought the 2019 trd off road with 5 miles for 37,500. The model you are looking at.
The TRD OR used to be 37k in 2016-2017... I'm quite shocked how pricey 2020 is even considering some added features...
I wouldn’t even pay that much! You can get at tundra for that price!
And yet they continue to sell like hotcakes.
I agree with how terrible the transmission feels. My dad owns one of these and It is very difficult to drive it smoothly due to the transmission. My mom owns a 4Runner and that drives way better. I prefer driving that!
Carlos Suarez Toyota should put the 2020 Highlander V6 and 8 speed auto in the Tacoma because it makes more horsepower and a little less torque than the current one plus it has a better transmission too
I have a question (if you’ve ever driven the manual) do you think the manual is better?
Use the ect button. With it activated the car is more responsive.
So there is no way to keep the Tacoma at around 2000 to 2500 rpm then, that transmission is pretty shifty?
A lot of modern automatic transmissions are like that. They are trying to get you to hypermile, though I will say, the lowish power of this Tacoma probably doesn't help.
Might as well get a TRD Pro
I like my Tacoma TRD Sport well enough, but I have to echo your points. The transmission and suspension tuning are definitely the weakest parts of this truck. I think the engine would be fine if the transmission was smoother and more agreeable. I honestly wish the transmission would downshift a little bit more readily to give you power. Yes, you can put it into ECT mode, but if you do that, the throttle becomes really REALLY sensitive. Toyota needs to sort that out into 3 modes: Eco, Normal, and Sport.
Eco - Regular at the moment
Normal - (we need this as a split between Regular and ECT)
Sport - ECT.
Keep an eye open for timing cover leaks. If yours starts to seep, the dealership will NOT “notice” them unless the timing cover is absolutely puking oil and/or you’re past 5 years/60k.
I also own a TRD Sport and I agree with those things as well. I wish I bought the manual transmission tacoma instead but I have an automatic because thats all I could find lol
@@Michael-pp8lz I saw a manual 4x4 on the lot on my way to work and it was gone on my way back home. Shoulda call in sick and buy it.
0:03 I thought my food was ready 😂
Your taco 🌮 video is served!
TheTopher haha lol
The Tacoma doesn't have a paddle shifter ? Or there is a trim that over a paddle shifter ?
Sheldon Rd. You must be in plymout-canton area lol. I grew up there
What are your thoughts on the army green color on the Tacoma
Why did you go for the Tacoma and not a Ranger? I used to have a 17' Tacoma and had the same complaints about the engine/trans as you mentioned and it was one of the reasons I got rid of it. The Ranger's drive train is so much superior and night and day. Been happy since day one with it.
It isn't his truck, he reviews a bunch of vehicles.
Next ranger please
Use ect next time improves shift mapping and holds gears longer.
2:51 does it has lane keep assist? Isn’t it only a lane departure warning?
Can you do a Honda Ridgeline? I'm very interested as to what you think about them.
The RL is way better than this Tacoma. Does what 90% of truck buyers want/need. I have a 17 E with the 6 speed and I get ~ 28 MPG on the highway. I would avoid the 9 speed versions.
@@jesterxfan Exactly
I wish Toyota would come out with a new V6. The 3.5 is a dinosaur, and it’s by no means the best V6 ever made.
it’s much better than the motors in the competition dummy🤣🤣🤣
It's pretty much bulletproof though lol why change?
Alex Mirador For the most part that’s true, but I’ve seen several of these engines with VVT-i problems. And when the motors fail, they can’t be rebuilt because you cannot bore the block.
Blazer Boiz I would take a Nissan V6 any day. If you change the timing chains at about 150k, they’re much better engines than the Toyota V6. Only problem is, the Nissan transmissions are terrible.
Toyota did this for fuel economy and emissions reasons. I have to agree, though. It needs more torque down low.
47k?!? With all those complaints on the tacoma u can prob find a used raptor with decent miles on it for that price.
I would go for a second hand 2019 ranger but in 2022. Wait to see how well they hold up first then see my options cause the frontier is also a good truck with the manual.
Dingas Healthy Lifestyle Rangers were outdated the moment they hit US lots.
@@sturat18 I mean here in Africa we had the so called new ranger you guys just released like 9 years ago but it was before the facelift version T6. Australia and UK also had it before you guys. Don't know why ford did that. The f250 was discontinued here in Africa, low demand and apparently the inline 6 engines overheated. F150s sold here are second hand special editions that were changed from left hand steering wheel to right hand side. Again, low demand. We love our midsizers they dont drink fuel and they last just as long.
Dingas Healthy Lifestyle that ranger has been around for a long time, just not here. No need to wait.
@@nkyryry uh-oh ranger danger
We need more manual cars please
How do you do top speed on tacoma which button on 2019
Off road
I think Toyota should put the 2020 Highlander’s V6 engine and 8 Speed Automatic Transmission in the Tacoma because it has more horsepower but a little less torque and I think the 8 speed auto is better than the 6 speed in the Tacoma
The highlander has the same engine. 2GR motor bub. Its gearing and transmission programming
I'd have to disagree on the stock Bilsteins. They're waaaay too soft. So soft that they just about make you seasick. If you buy an Off Road, be prepared to switch out the stock dampers for something better like the 5160s or 6112s.
I regrettably sold my 03 Tacoma for the 17 Tacoma. Bad decision. The transmission in the 17 was terrible shifting. I totally agree with Topher. Constantly working the throttle. Sold it a year later. Got a 4Runner and love it.
If I get a manual, what about the resell on the manual???????????
I I know it’s a truck not a race car but it looks slow when you step on the gas.
2020 4runner next?
Honestly, I don't notice the spergtastic transmission as much as others seem to do, to me it doesn't respond as quickly as I'd like for my driving style. With that said, I haven't had many other complaints over the 6,300+ miles I've put on my 2016 Limited. Ride quality is more comparable to an SUV than any other truck I've driven, All the controls are very ergonomically placed, Sound system bumps but it's a little bass heavy at times, Hauled all sorts of shit in and behind it with ease and for what it's worth I think the engine has plenty of power for what I do (plus it sounds great).
Also, Also Tacomas are waaaay too expensive new.
Can you please do a dodge journey next
under power?
It's Tacoma your favorite car ?
Make video Toyota Hilux srv 2020
Dude is it Pittsburgh?
I've driven a family members 2017 camry with a similar 6 speed and omg it's annoying. Him saying he would rather have a cvt is really a deal breaker for me. Very sad.
@@nateallen2709 Yea. That makes sense. I think the gears in the 6 speed are just too tall. Either than or they need to tune the motor to make more torque down low.
@@nateallen2709 Oh I see. Thanks for explaining that to me.
@@nateallen2709 Yea the 4.0 on the nissan is great. The 4.0 i6 in my ZJ jeep has more gusto than that Tacoma I think lol.
@@nateallen2709 it does.. 3k rpm and u spinning the tires
Do you think you would have had better performance on the sand with a manual transmission?
I think so, it definitely makes it a more fun truck to drive. Back in high school I used to rallycross a 2003 tacoma manual and it was a riot!
I'll take a Ridgeline any day
I’m not sure why Toyota’s top selling truck has the worst automatic transmission in the segment. Just strange they kept it in there since this generation came out.
I really want this car but I can’t afford it :(
Y’all hear that Cvt haters? He’d actually prefer a Cvt or a manual.
Not a fan of CVTs... at all..
CVTs are wack
Always wanted one but overpriced.New ones Mexico made
Started off on wrong foot!
EVERY Tacoma has skid plates!!!!!
Lamborghini
Wassup
Both the Tacoma and Colorado zr2 are my favorite midsize pickup trucks rather than the Ford ranger or jeep gladiator
The interior looks like it's from 2009. Exterior looks great.
3:13 it's not yours right?
Um, Chris? The last Takoma you drove that was a Manual was a 2016 TRD pro!
Dang, it was that long ago - you're right!
@@TheTopher I have autism! That's how I remember so much!
@@kylechellino2579 That doesn’t have anything to do w memory dude
Yeah it does. Research it
“On this TRD Off Road we get” the crappiest “off road” tires ever installed on a $47000 pickup.
God damn $47k!? I just got the SR with SX pkg for $32k out the door. All those extra I can add afterwards and still cheaper.
I will say I don’t really go “off road” mainly for Home Depot runs and typical home improvement stuff.
Rear drum brakes in 2020 in a $47k truck. Nice!
Rear drum brakes works and last 🤷♂️
@@flat4engine482 - Even the Corolla comes with four wheel discs as standard now. The Tacoma should follow suit. It's long overdue.
Drum brakes better at offroad
Reliable and doesn't break down as much. Smart move by toyota.
Yeah what is this the 1940s?
See the reason why it switches gears so much is because it’s trying to figure out how to get the best mpg but at the same time not wanna get pushed so it get confused...the only way to fix it is with a tune
You shouldn’t have to buy a new $40k plus Tacoma and then have to immediately pay for a tune to fix the transmission issue.
Brad Edwards fax I agree but it has to be done to fix it....the programming that toyota used is strictly for mpg Soo to fix that you gotta tune it
Trust me when I tell you the manual transmission is no better. It comes down to the engine, it has hardly any low down torque, it’s all up high. I test drove a new one with a 6 speed manual a few years back and was extremely disappointed in its driving characteristics. It’s a shame because I love toyota trucks. Having owned a 1st gen Tacoma, 3rd gen 4Runner, and my current 1st gen Tundra, this truck would be at the bottom of the list of new trucks I’d like to own.
I think the new truck is overrated (I have an 05)
@@SimornM Ok you said this like on 4 other comments lmao
@@vlaguerrero27 hey man I'm just agreeing with people 🤷 lol
This video makes me wanna avoid the
Tacoma while looking for a truck.
Dirt roads do not qualify as being “off road”.... it’s a road.
That's the name of the model "TRD Offroad" not referring to his driving location
I said this once and I'll say it again, Toyota should add the 1UR as an option to the Tacoma and 4Runner. If not...at least offer the diesels in these chassis
Nearly fifty thousand, just get two Miatas
Lmao
I may have missed it but did you ever hit the ECT button which wakes up the transmission and in my opinion is a must to drive around in city driving. I drive the crappy 4cyl SR5 at work and have to drive with ECT pressed full time!!! If this had Ford's 2.3 liter turbo and 10speed it would be fantastic! Bring on a turbo 4 Toyota.....its ridiculous that you(Toyota) want us to spend our money with this crappy transmission/engine combo
My issue with ECT in the V6 Tacoma is that it makes the engine too lively. Off throttle, it's slowing down. Slightly on throttle, it's speeding up. It makes the V6 into an on/off switch. I can see where it would help the 4 cyl though.
We need a middle point on the V6, something that gives you quicker throttle response, but still gives you a bit of travel so you can maintain speed.
Fuel economy is embarrassing. My super crew F-150 with the full sized bed gets 19 mpg.
That’s ok, the Tacoma will make up for it in 10 years when it’s still worth almost $20k and your Ford is worth $3k
Jon De Nahh, the F-150 will last me as long as I need it too. You couldn’t pay me $20K to drive that shit box Toyota lol.
MCRC as long as you only need it to last until you lease a new one, then it probably will.
Jon De you act like in the year 2020 only Toyota is getting vehicles to high mileage lol. I’d rather get 250K miles out of a great vehicle my family actually enjoys riding in than get 500K miles out of a piece of shit.
MCRC No, not all. Honda makes great products too. Do you think your family will like the second or third motor more?
This truck show you how Toyota just stay behind from others brands except for its off road capabilities
