    29:23 That's actually Slavic mythology. The hut with the chicken legs is the house of Baba Yaga, who is basically a very powerful and wise old witch that lures children into her house, cooks and eats them. She is inherently evil, but sometimes can help heroes in achieving their goals. That old lady who came out of the hut, I'd assume, is her.

    "The House with Chicken legs" and the Old Woman are definitely Baba Yaga and her home from Slavic Folklore. They are both quite the characters. Baba Yaga is a witch that kind of does what you expect from her. She eats/harms those that fear her while she helps/blesses those that have confisdence and seek help. Meanwhile her House can be controlled by commands but it is alive and doesnt always listen.. (I might be wrong on some details its been a long while.)

    Northern Journey seems to lean heavily into the Nordic troll/hag/fey folklore, where anything that might *seem* benevolent at first is more than likely one of the above types of creature trying to lure unwary travellers into a trap of some manner. I particularly like the one that offers to ferry you across but then throws away the paddle to attack you, very clever - and very fitting for the theme.

    • @Thiefnuker
      @Thiefnuker 10 месяцев назад +22

      - count your teaspoons
      - steal your children for farm work
      - bite your sister on the boob
      - eat your children, either right there or take away (having iron teeth helps)

    To those that play 5th edition Dungeons and Dragons, it might be familiar to them because there's art in the Dungeon Master's Guide on the page 70 where it is depicted to be stomping an adventuring party! :)

    What I really love about this series, and this video in particular, is that it's very easy to tell which of these games you actually kinda like based on how much criticism you give. During the Runewalker segment in particular, you were giving honest critique and advice to the devs to help them improve the game. Unlike in the red riding hood game, where you gave no critique because there wasn't really anything redeeming about it.

    What Runewaker is missing is an enemy systenm, where they use magic in ways that you could steal it somehow? That might make the combat flow better, instead of being a scramble to run away while looking for wall runes only

    • @hitlord
      @hitlord 2 года назад +37

      Agreed. Enemies cast spells at you, you use a hand gesture for stealing or something, so you can grab it out of the air and redirect it.
      This idea could even fuel a multiplayer for that game, being completely honest. Provided the netcode was ABSOLUTELY SOLID, it would be one of the most skillful FPSs to ever exist, because it would be pure reaction time.

    • @thricefoldstudios6217
      @thricefoldstudios6217 2 года назад +1

      Hi dasTofu. Thanks for the input! This is a really interesting idea and I may like to implement something like this in a future update. One thing I will point out is that unfortunately Iron chose the hardest of the 3 routes from the chapel (sort of like going straight to the catacombs from firelink shrine) and came up against enemies of a high level. I think he was put off by the difficulty of this route and then didn't want to try the others.
      Also Runewaker has several common consumable items which allow summoning of runes on the fly so that the player doesn't need to only find them on walls. This is really useful for being able to freeze enemies quickly and control hordes that would otherwise cause the player to have to 'scramble'.

A point I would give it, that could make it better in my mind, is when you get a spell you can have charges for the casting depending on how many times you fused it. " I ate some mushroom and I'm doing like triple damage" Now that's historically accurate

    Lotta unfulfilled potential in this one it feels like. Other than the last three, they all seem like they have something of value or something unique, but just don't have solid enough core design elements to be worthwhile. Devil Spire and Northern Journey look intriguing, but pretty niche. Not sure if they are my niche, but they certainly seem well developed. Love the series as always. It'll be interesting to see what you put out for Elden Ring.

    Fell off watching these vids but I'm back to pick up where I left off! Glad I did because I'm definitely going to check out that 'Northern Journey' game - looks right up my alley for weird first-person experiences!

      I recommend watching the creator's videos, he has a RUclips channel where he posted ``dev-logs´´, seeing the way he created his project made me appreciate the game more, he really put effort into its creation . His channel name is Slid studio.

    Just saw this one today: Katana Kata. Love your videos and I'm a big nerd for samurai games so it felt like it would fit

    I'm really happy to see the amount of support you've gotten for this series. I have been watching since episode 1 and what you do for these small devs is great. Giving them a real review and giving their product exposure to improve is an amazing tool for these aspiring developers. Thank you!

    Loved your videos Pineapple
    I've just got into the soul-ish genre recently due to Elden Ring.
    Then I realize the Monster Hunter series is kinda like a soul-ish franchise in a way?
    Also I had game that was like a childhood nightmare to me,
    it was "Onimusha 3" on the PS2.
    Maybe it could be easier for me now, but it was an absolute nightmare when I was a child.
    I was so traumatized because I can get stuck in levels for hours and die over and over.
    Also the amount of recoveries is so limited.
    You collect herbs throughout the levels but they're very scarce and will soon run out.
    There was a tutorial level that teaches you about the "reflex attack(?)" system, which requires you to sheathe your weapon then immediately attack (or block?) when an enemy's attack is going to hit you.
    I can't even get pass that tutorial level (it is optional though).
    It was so difficult and I don't even think I can do that easily as an adult now.
    Sadly I think my PS2's cables are too old and they're having contact problems, so I couldn't just go back and challenge it.
    I'm kinda curious if you or anyone has also played the game and your thoughts about it?

    Runewaker looked really cool as a base concept. Such a novel, refreshing idea. I think the "one bullet" nature of it can make it maybe a touch too punishing. I'd like to see the movement be a bit quicker. You mentioned it feeling like an FPS, and I think pulling more from that would be good. More like DOOM style movement or something. Evasion is pretty much the cornerstone of the game while looking for spells and waiting for them to refresh so it needs to deep and engaging to be constantly moving/dodging, plus a sense of speed would make the act of moving more fun.
