You mean the only guy? There is a good theory that pawns can became any peace exept for King because they all girls and king is the only dude at his team.
In hungarian: We call the rook bastion; The knight horse; The bishop "runner" which is a mirror translation, so I'll go with messenger; Queen isn't the official name, instead we also call the queen "leader" which is another mirror translation, so I'll go with general instead; And pawn is called peasant or foot soldier. Fortunately, the king remains king, but at this point I wouldn't be surprised if we had a different name for that too. Edit: the knight's official name is actually hussar
In Italy the rook is called “tower”, which has basically the same meaning. But the bishop is called “ensign”, so I just imagine the piece throwing a banner like a javelin
Fun fact, the rook is named after rookeries. These would be often tall towers used to house birds, especially messenger birds. Mostly it would be using corvids. Also if I was to put the knight in game terms it's that one guy with a knife or sword or similar who can evade all your shots somehow and stabs you in the face.
me: haha! his king is on h8, cornered, and the open 7th file is entirely controlled by my rook, which is trapping the king. now all I need to do is move my queen to g7 and checkmate! opponent's bishop on a1: go on.
Bishop users can be seriously dangerous at times. On of my favourite openings is to get the pawns guarding the rooks to move and snipe them from across the board with a bishop I forgot about
Okay this is just perfect. I gotta see more of these. Like literally, this video explains all the three chess pieces shown in a perfect sense, yet so mematic and comedic.
Damn, Don't starve really made these pieces accurate. They are called clockworks, and there are three kinds of them, the first and most basic being the knight. They jump and have a hard and fast hitting meelee attack, it's easy to dodge, but they have the highest dps. The second is the bishop. Very few enemies have ranged damage, and the bishop is one of them. They charge up a fucking long range attack and snipe you out of nowhere. They look like a rusty water dispenser. And lastly, the clockwork rook. This Robot Rhino With a Rook piece as its horn charges in a straight line, hitting like a truck, luckily, it can also hit his allies with each charge.
Fun fact: in portuguese, the Knight is called Horse. For years I thought that the Knight was a horse that went to the war on its own and, like, didn't talk but was intelligent enough to obey orders
When someone sacrifice it’s queen you already know that you’re losing But if someone sacrifice it’s rook you’re losing the hardest possible way and they might even troll you.
In Vietnamese the Rook is literally called a "Xe", aka. Car or maybe Chariot, depends on you. Bishop is called "Tượng", aka. Elephant, but what I like is that the Knight is called "Mã", aka. Horse, pretty accurate and probably inspired by Chinese chess.
I feel like knights and bishops are both equally important, as knights are the only pieces who can attack the queen and one bishop can only move in one color of square
Fun fact: in spanish the knight is actually "caballo" (the horse) and the rook is "torre" (the Tower) and bishop is "alfil" wich has no real meaning beyond being the name of the piece but comes from arab and it means "the elephant"
And the reason why it was elephant and have long range is that Elephant army were used not only to scare their enemies with exotic animal, but also that elephant provides a good support for your archer, effectively a highly mobile archer tower. In fact they rarely used to charge simply because elephant is way too expensive to be used as charging unit.
