Do you buy more books than you’ll ever read? If so, are you happy with that, or do you think it needs to change?

    • @arobinreads
      @arobinreads 2 года назад +5

I did a couple of years ago, but my reading taste really changed. I also got overwhelmed with all the books and I noticed I actually read books from the library sooner and with more pleasure. So I got rid of almost all my unread books. I recently bought a couple, but I already don't like them sitting there unread, so won't do that anymore (if I can avoid the temptation). I now only buy books I know I love so much that I will read them over and over again.

In graduate school I could justify buying books. PhD students were supposed to read. However I now look upon my book collection of over 7000 books as controlled and having a purpose. Good collectors will take several topic areas and build upon that as opposed to buying anything. The biggest challenge for me is shelf space because there are not enough shelves of space to build shelves in my home. Books can be for reference of actually reading, but they should have purpose. At the moment I am building up sections where I have too few books. These include art and art history, religion, Biblical studies, and memoirs.

Having mostly unread books on my shelf gets me to read more. I'm homebound, and my library doesn’t mail books, so I buy them. And if my shelves are full of read books, I get discouraged. But unread, I feel empowered and less homebound, because they feel like portals to new worlds. As a homebound person, this makes me feel included in the world and helps A LOT with loneliness!

I think having a unread books library is like having a Records library where you pull a record depending on your mood and start playing. Having a limited but all read books library severely undermine the fact that we are tuned to follow our mood in personal spaces. For example, I'll pull an anthology of short stories/or magazine, while waiting for something...I know I'll be leaving in a while, but I can spend the time reading, then I'll go for a short story read. If I feeling like relaxing and stepping into another world, maybe I'll pick up a world building novel. If I am feeling like wanting to get inspired or curious about BTS, maybe an autobiography/biography.

    1. I feel it like a food that is never going to rot. So I will taste few pages and if I don't like it, I will leave it for the future, when i maybe in the mood.
    2. Earlier I was not able to buy books because i could not afford. Now I am buying as I have my own money. Which I can invest or waste. I can take risk of buying unknown books too. This makes me happy, like yes I have made it in my life.

I am so happy to learn that I am not alone!!! That this is so common that there’s actually a word for it! I don’t even know how many books I have. I have even taken pristine condition books off the shelf and donated them, just to make room for the pile of newer books I’ve acquired. Thankfully I am fast approaching retirement, and looking forward to tackling my library. The key is to reduce distractions and retrain my mind to focus. Multitasking trains your brain to constantly switch up, so that even when there’s no reason to, your brain just wants to. IMHO, it causes adult onset ADD.

These days, I try to have a reading list in Trello instead of a bookshelf. That has the same effect on me: The feeling that there are potential and new discoveries in those books without the financial and physical stress.

It's a mixed affair for me. I live in a 1-bedroom apartment and I own 4,000 books. I bought a lot of books for reading later -- like when I retired. I'm now retired, but I'm not the same person I was when I first bought many of these books. I, like you, often feel incredibly burdened by books I haven't read, but I make an attempt to read them and succeed -- but not consistently. Because I choose to read a previously unread book and find I don't like it or am bored by it, I either buy a new one or go to the library to find a more satisfying reading experience. I have culled my books over the years but I can't seem to bring the number below 4,000.

I think Ray Bradbury asked the question, 'what's the point of owning a library of books we've already read'. I personally see my library as a menu of future reading. I can enjoy the anticipation of reading and have a wealth of options depending what I want to read. In the winter I love to sit with a quality folio society book or an creepy arkham house title. In summer a cheap paperback might suit better. Of course, the thrill of collecting rare or unusual titles adds another dimension to creating an interesting library. When it turns into disorganised hoarding, that's the time to re-evaluate.

(however as soon as I get one I always go right to the end, to ensure Kindle "thinks" I've read them so that the authors get royalties on all pages read - otherwise they don't get paud as long as we haven't read their books and that can take months - and then I read them whenever I want! I usually read more than one book at once, about 3 each one being a different genre (so I have a different book for different moods ahah). But with Kindle you really don't feel overwhelmed, it just takes a little while to get everything into the library you want, then you organise each book as you buy them which makes things super easy! However at home I have a library full of books I've read. Actually one might wonder, why do we keep books that we have read already, right? hehehe that's the power of books! even if we may never read them again, we keep those whose stories have touched us the most (I do anyway) just like we keep old photographs!

My library - which borders on 10,000 (paperback and hardcover) - is my treasure. From the time I began building it in the early 1990s in my apartment, I could not have anticipated its growth. While I have come to terms with the likelihood that I may likely not read all the books in my library, I am comfortable with that. I continue to read and derive much knowledge and pleasure from the books I read.

Some years back I started buying a lot of books that I'd read already.
Books from childhood that I loved, books I'd borrowed from the library and wanted to read again, books leant to others that were not returned, books I'd lost on my travels and constantly moving house ...
Now I buy books I really want to read, for example by authors I care for, some of whose works I've not read.
I loved Arabian Nights as a kid and still have the original volume from all those years back but just had to get hold of the eighteen volumes of Sir Richard Burton's monumental translation ... ten volumes of the Nights, and eight of the supplementary Nights (a beautiful old edition for under £200!) which I plan to read little by little over the next thousand and one nights ...
I'm busy with other things too and have at least one non-reading day a week.
It's all working out pretty well so far.

Idk. I feel like going to undergrad just got me to love reading and since I graduated undergrad in 2010, I’ve loved buying books. The day I found a used bookstore in my area changed my life. Wait! It gets better. That bookstore I used to travel 45 minutes to moved closer to where I live and work, so I’m in the bookstore all the time. Idk. Buying a book (especially at a cheap cost) just feels good to me. I’ve learned so much about life I didn’t know about. Books have changed my life so much! If I can afford it, I’ll always buy a book I’m interested in even if it takes a while for me to get to it.

I have a constant push and pull. I have many interests and while I hate clutter and I do feel overwhelmed by books sometimes, I have this other feeling that while it's okay to assume there will be libraries in the future, if the book is something that won't be in a local library, I feel like I should keep it because I know how precarious our relationship with digital stuff is and this worries me (I used to have CDs but now Spotify wants me to pay them $10 a month forever in order to buy those CDs again plus everything else?). Total minimalists trust too much that digital stuff will be accessible and I'm not so sure of that. If you've ever lost electricity, you might have encountered something that some have never experienced and many of us haven't experienced in a long time: boredom and lack of stimulation from screens. The fact that none of us owns music and movies anymore feels like a bad thing that limits our choices and independence from subscription services. Plus my wife is someone who likes to keep things, but not as much of an acquirer (except in a few areas), where I'm an all-round acquirer and a purger. So do I trust that I can pay someone a little bit money forever in order to access something I already have or do I resist consumerism? Consumerism is, after all, a way of life. Poor people in poor countries value their things, they take care of their things, whereas people in the US live in a disposable society where we feel a constant pressure to acquire things and nearly everything we acquire is future trash rather than what used to be called "consumer durables." Single use everything makes us view most of what we buy as disposable and in order to prop up many national economies, we have developed a compulsive way of collecting things and those who are most functional are often just good about purging things, not necessarily people who don't consume as much. We used to wash out bottles and exchange them, but now we throw everything away and some of us believe the little recycling looking symbol on the bottom of all this plastic suggesting everything is recycle when almost no plastic is. But even constantly recycling cardboard, even if it doesn't degrade, is still a huge waste of energy. So, it's a lot.

But if its likes most RUclipsrs who do it mainly for views, I can understand why it can annoy some people. And there's the other side, who have shelves full of books they've already read.

I think for many people, it's not a goal to read all the books you own. It's to have a wide variety of books available to suit your mood. I know this applies to me. I have a few hundred books (down from about 2000 at one time). I'm unlikely to finish reading them all. But I have books on many subjects, as well as a good bit of fiction. Depending on my mood, I might choose light fiction to help me recover from a hard day; or serious literature, if I want to be challenged. Various technical books, depending on whether I'm interested in computers or math or various other studies. I've got some world scriptures, in case I'm looking for something profound.
I think it's something like having a set of encyclopedia volumes. You don't expect to read through the whole set. You may want to be able to find some information on a topic that comes up. I realize that the Internet fully satisfies this need, but in the past it did have merit.
So yeah, I'll never finish all my books. I'll probably purchase more books, most of which I won't finish reading. And that's fine. As long as it doesn't negatively impact my life, there's no harm and no need to stop.
At one time, I *was* a bibliomaniac. I bought books I couldn't afford, often not having money for food or rent. This was clearly unwholesome. Now I am far more reasonable; I'd say I'm a bibliophile. I don't spend my rent money on books. I buy a book or two now and then. I also donate or give away books I'm done with. And I still am likely to keep buying books, most of which I'll never read. And that's OK.

In my opinion, if you buy more books than you can read then you're something called a book collector. Books are lovely, books are fantastic items to own. Keep them, love them.
If, however, you buy a book, read it, and then buy another one you're a reader. That's even better. Also, once you read a book send it back out into the world. No need to kill any more trees than we are just to print more books.
