I think Fredrick Backman’s writing is very autism coded (I’m autistic and I love his writing sm it flows so well to me) but I think people don’t expect that type of tone/topics from “simple” writing and it comes across more shocking and matter of fact than people would expect
I think you should give sword of kaigen another chance it is very dense and character driven, the mother son dynamics the unique magic system the action scenes are worth it!! Maybe in audio form to make it easily digestible ❤
I loved Merlin! Need to rewatch myself and always enjoy seeing your jellycat collection grow in videos. I will be adding Beartown to my tbr now. Sword of Kaigen is also on my list but I fear it will be too high fantasy for me as well. So it’s down on the list after I branch more into other high fantasy books.
Sword of Kaigen might not be for you, but also it does pick up significantly later in the book. HOWEVER, her other book Blood Over Bright Haven is totally different stylistically and much more fast paced, definitely recommend you try it!
I read all of these books last year except for Beartown, which I still need to get too. I agree that The great alone is phenomenal. Also The Glow of the everflame (the second book in the Kindred curse saga) is the best one in the series.
i think i know where you dnfed Sword of Kaigen and it could be the same point where i soft dnf'ed it because i needed the physical copy to start taking notes. im not a high fantasy reader but im curious about the story, i got overwhelmed but i think that taking notes will reaaaally help. maybe you can try that as well 💙
Fredrik Backman is fenomenal with his writingstyle! There’s a short one whichI fall in love with. I don’t know if it’s translated. It’s called Och varje morgon blir vägen hem längre och längre in swedish. Wonderful! ❤😢
I have all of these books in my tbr so it was really nice hearing your thoughts on them Ellen 💌can't wait to read them (not gonna lie the sword of kaigen is making me a bit nervous 😅)
I think I might have to give KH another chance. I soft dnf'd "The Nightingale" in 2023 (historical fiction just wasn't/lowkey still isn't my genre) and I dnf'd "Firefly Lane" because I didn't like that book so, therefore, the idea of reading her books leaves a bad taste in my mouth, but I still feel like I haven't given her a fair chance yet since all the book girlies seem to love her. I just might try "The Great Alone" after all. And I'm also not a high fantasy person either, but I want to try "The Sword of Kaigen" cuz romantasies haven't been hitting for me the way I would've liked them to. Lastly, loved that you enjoyed "Beartown", I felt the same way as you in the beginning but once what happens, happens the tone shift is amazing!
Ahhhh makes me sad for The Sword of Kaigen it’s one of my favorite book BUT I totally understand what you explained&you shouldn’t force yourself to finish it! (Life is too short for that 🤣🫶🏽)
Outstanding video, many thanks Ellen! I do own Beartown and The Great Alone so those have just rocketed up my tbr after hearing your reviews! I'm excited to read them. I think you speak well -- intelligently and clearly about books you love, you articulate well why you liked them so that is helpful.😊 And I totally get the dnf -- I do the same. I agree with you that there are so many books out there we know we'd like more or we're more in the mood for at the time, that to put yourself through 700 pages of something you're not feeling is not necessary.
Idk reading for enjoyment is fine, but reading itself is more then just enjoying. So many books aren’t ment to enjoy, they are ment to think and provoke. Idk Could be wrong with my opinion
ELLEN SUNDAY WE ALL CHEERED

Imagine me working, in public, listening to the end of the Great Alone, and trying not to cry in front of all my coworkers. Girl it was rough. 😔💔
Ellen posted!!! I am SAT! 💕
Not sure if anyone mentioned it but there are 2 more books in the beartown series.
Just in case you didn’t know bear town is a series. It has two more books.
i didn’t realise until after i filmed this video but i did look into it!! im so excited to continue🥰
I believe beartown is part of a kind of trilogy series so you might be interested in book 2 and 3 :)
omg i need to look into that!!! thank you!
I read my grandmother sends her regards and apologises by Fredrick Backman I really enjoyed that

The intro is so good. And yeah. I was so worried you wouldn't like Sword of Kaigen. I am so sorry. But you at least tried

Hey, fellow Merlin lover. 😊

i feel like that’s what i said in this video :)
