Hey man just found your channel and must say no matter how hard your year was just remember you made this kids past couple of days with trying to watch as many as possible. Love how passionate you are about games. Keep going!
I've unconsciously been slowly conquering my backlog now. I used to finished the games that I play from start to finish but now whenever the experience gets sour, I play a different game. I just graduated and got a job so I don't have the free time that I used to have anymore. So I gotta pick the games that I enjoy now
That's your 5th video I watch about conquering the backlog even tho I don't need it. I'm beating like 35-55 games a year and I'm satified with that, but these videos are just a JOY to watch.
I love all your content. As a mail carrier I live for a new long video I can hop into and listen to but this video is exceptionally fucking amazing. Thanks for making this one you Totally Tubular Dude!
You’re probably my favorite RUclipsr to be honest, I love just hearing people talk about games they enjoy or don’t enjoy playing. You should make a video about games you’ve dropped over the years
Thank you so much man, some of these tips are things I've never thought of before that'll be of big help (especially the first one lol, its really hard for me to not add games, you've opened my eyes). Joy
This video was made for me. I have been struggling to catch up on finishing games between graduate school and a full time job. Thanks for the tips man.
Well, I messed up right at tip #1. I don't keep buying games just for myself though. I buy them hoping to share with friends and fam. Few things bring me more joy than a loved one looking through my collection and finding a new game to play. And if its a game I have yet to play, I can either watch them play through it, or i can bump it up the list and play it soon myself. That aside, you are infact 1000000% right about not buying more games. I just have no self control. Specially on those steam sales omg... but I did start a google Doc to keep track of what games im on and where im at.
Joy, Thank you for the kick in ass with a reality check with buying more games ! Looking up a quick guid for areas i have trouble with really helps keep the game going and keeping it fun. Looking forward to more vids.
Jonathan I cannot thank you enough for putting me on to DMC5. I had completely slept on it and would have never played if you didn’t rave about it. Playing it now and it may be one of my favorite games ever
My goal has never really been to finish my backlog per se, but to finish more games in a year. Because I feel like there's so many games I want to have finished but i usually only finish 30 or so a year so it really makes me feel like its been a whole year and there's so many I still haven't played yet that I'd like to. I really liked your tip and only playing what makes you excited, that's how I've always chosen what to play next, and it ensures I'm going into the game with a good mindset which usually boosts enjoyment even more
I admire your consistency. I've been working on conquering my backlog years ago, I even had a channel called backlog games, but through some years I've not just burnt out making videos but games in general. I really love listening you talk about games, but I would never ever want to talk about them ever again and that's because I've failed at all points you've just mentioned conquering my backlog. So fair suggestions, I guess, things would have gone in a different direction if I'd follow these golden rules or advices. I've actually skipped a whole year only relying on toilet seat mobile gaming, but that's even worse, so I'm slowly trying to head back to bigger games, but I've given up on conquering my backlog, I just want to find games that I find fun and that's about it. So your last advice is the most important in my opinion. Keep up the excellent work - ahem: fun :)
Love the effort you put into the top 60 of 2024 video! I believe I will clear my backlog this year. I have the last third of metaphor, the ace attorney investigations collection, and the Apollo Justice trilogy. That’s all!
This really was a great video with excellent points that were outlined eloquently. I struggle with my backlog a lot. You really have a lot of passion for video games, and I can relate. I’m a new sub and I’m really feeling your content
one tip i'd add before watching the video is you DONT have to play every game on Harder difficulty. I like to play on harder difficulties, which just naturally increases playtime, but sometimes, i just need to get through it on normal. No one can judge you edit: great minds think alike
I think it also depends on the game. There are games where a higher difficulty will make you engage more with the game mechanics, thus making it more fun while there are also games which just get more frustrating
But is the point of Amnesia, Alien Isolation or Frostpunk to have a good time? There is something I get from certain games that I love, which I would not describe as fun or having a good time, despite enjoying them immensely. So I think it's important to distinguish between a challenging area being a chore to get through, but worth it, and a game that feels like a chore simply because it's mediocre.
Hey man great vid, you've been goddamn busy this past year! As an adult with very little time to game these days, many of your points resonated with me. Hope the new year treats you and the channel well! Joy.
#1 is hard for me to do when a game it as it's all time lowest, but it's something I can put more effort in to do. I played through 55 games this year, and it felt like a lot. I enjoyed most of them and even took a break for a month. I played some great games and look forward to my 2025 list.
Last year I finished 48 games from the backlog and overall feel great to stay consistent with it. When I come to some games I’m definitely gonna do as you said in some points because as a completionist or a person who plays on harder difficulties it gets stale at some point.
For tip #7, it helps to play multiple games but of different genres or styles. Right now I'm going through Cyberpunk, Nier:Automata, BioShock: Infinite and Mario and Luigi: Brothership. Playing the same genre will burn you out.
One massive tip that worked for me, was to make a list of all the games in the backlog, and clasify them by genre trying to have them evenly divided. Then you start extracting one game from each genre at a time so you come out with a list that tells you in which order to play and that is diversifyed enough that you don't get bored out of playing the same type of games all the time. At least it solved my biggest problem, which was choice paralisys and getting stuck in the cofort zone with one genre. I hope this is useful for someone out there! Have a good year everyone
I’m one of those kinda people who like to get all the achievements in a game. However, it can dampen the experience sometimes. So the solution I’ve found is to have two collections on steam, one is “completed” which is 100% done and the other is “almost completed” which is game is done but not 100% done. I know that there are games in almost completed that will never be 100% complete but by putting them in there I can trick that part of my brain into thinking I’ll come back to it. And sometimes I do end up going back and I get to revisit some games that I’ve had time to forget about. Just wanted to share something that worked for me
I never used to never finish games. The thing that helped me was not buying a game or more games until you're finished the one you are playing, or just bought. Never buy multiple titles at once! One at a time. Don't stop a game for ages and try and continue, you will forget and dislike it. Just keep playing it. I too learned to look up a lot of things in games. I used to be against games that basically required guides, but I dislike missing things even more, so now I look things up. Some people like wandering around trying to figure it out but if I spent too long until i get bored and annoyed, i just look it up. Playing on easy is important if its too frustrating, don't feel embarrassed. Some games are really difficult if you aren't used to that particular genre, just turn it down til you get better if needed. If the achievements are too time consuming and the game doesn't have a lot of "replay value" (because a lot of trophies require you to redo a lot of content) then skip! If i start a game (usually that i got for free on like PS plus or something) and it doesnt grab me or I dont enjoy it, its dropped within half an hour. I have played more games in 2024 than any year ever and its been amazing, totally worth it!
Tip #1 is a rough one for me but it’s true. I’m always looking for games to add to my collection and in doing so it only adds to this backlog. But on the other hand it doesn’t bother me that I have close to 120 games on my backlog because it means there’s always something I’m going to be able to play. Tip #5 is a MUST. Perfect example for me was the game In Sound Mind. I heard pretty good things about it and it looked like an interesting game, but when I played it I just wasn’t feeling the story and the gameplay. I got through the first couple hours and dropped it because honestly I’d rather move on to something I can be enJOYing.
Make a list. Break up really long games with shorter ones. Schedule play sessions that are uninterrupted and 2-3 hours at length. Do other things, don't just play games. If a game isn't fun anymore, set it aside, but don't give up just because it's a challenge. You'd be surprised how much better you get with practice. Rest your eyes, do yoga for your back, and stretch your wrists and fingers. And most of all HAVE FUN!
Wow, I've been on a similar journey since my first year of college, ALSO five years ago, however most of my years are around 50 games. This year I thought I went really all-out after completing 80 games woahhh... My biggest trick is to balance what I play, don't play too many of one genre or length of game back to back to back.
Taking a productivity approach this year: OmniFocus + Tags + Duration How Long to Beat, taking the main story time and adding it to the OmniFocus duration area. Using tags to build out different filters, like Priority, Status, Genre, etc. Games that I’m at least halfway done take priority, along with games that are the quickest to beat. This is all being filtered from three buckets: PS5, Retroid Pocket 5, or Steam Deck. More than anything, I have better clarity on this mountain of a backlog.
I’ve seen alot of these videos recently but the one thing alot of people seem to not mention is how impossible backlogs are for people with kids and full times jobs😂it’s a real struggle trying to squeeze in an hour or 2 of a game a night
I've tasked myself with not buying a new game this year. And just seeing if I get anything for birthday/Xmas. And that's gonna be so hard with Kingdom come 2 this year 😭 but my backlog is enormous!
My couple of tips… Stop scrolling on social media or anything like that when gaming. Can take 5…10 mins, multiple times throughout out of your gaming session. Streaming and handhelds have helped me. Especially as a father of four. Two of which are under fours years old. The PS Portal has been awesome. So has the Switch. Can squeeze in more hours per week easily. Also…avoid live service games if you’re playing a game you really wanna get through. Or at least avoid getting the pass for it, meaning you have to play it to complete that pass.
I only 100% the games I truly enjoy. I mean this whole video is about beating as many games in the least amount of time, but while I agree with the notion that our time is precious and we have hundreds of other games to play... the core of this whole issue should be that we have a backlog that we need to get through. How fast you do it should be of no concern. I mean if you are skipping out on content just to beat a game fast JUST to move quickly on to the next one, are you really enjoying yourself or seeing all that the developers worked so hard on? It's like when I read manga and I slog through the chapters, re-reading the panels multiple times to really get a feel for the story and really appreciate the art. Someone spent a lot of time drawing every single one of those panels, and getting every single pencil stroke perfect to create these subtle emotions that the story wants to convey... and you just wanna read through it as fast as possible to get on to the next manga you are also following? Are you really enjoying it at that point and respecting it as an artform? Getting through you vacklog shouldn't be a speed race. If you really like a game by all means leave no stone unturned. I mean at the end of the day you spent money on this thing and wringing it for everything it's got is how you get your money's worth... not just beating it quickly and be done with it for the sake of moving down a list.
My problem is I don’t get glued to every game I buy and I feel like I need to justify my purchase and play it until I get my moneys worth. I can also fall into the false sense of accomplishment.
I just realized yesterday that I had 3 months of humble bundle months where I hadn't claimed anything and a couple where I only claimed 3-4, I added about 50 games to my Steam library yesterday
Im going to be adding one myself to the list which kinda adds to your number 1. Dont watch "Buy before expensive" videos . RUclipsrs love these videos cause they get clicks. Fomo is real and causes people to Buy stuff unnecessarily including videogames
Here's something I'm going to try. 50% of my games are 9 hours or less. 75% are 25 hours or less. I'm going to space out the very long games between a bunch of shorter ones and I hope to finish at least 50 this year.
The only thing i'd say about tip 1 is its not always buying games but having subscriptions like Game Pass or PS+ means youre always getting more games added to the backlog 😮😂
I'm super interested in what is going to derail my backlog this year. 2023 it was gamestop 4 for 40 sales. 2024 it was PS+. Can't wait to see what 2025 thing will nuke my chances of getting a smaller backlog.
In 2025 I finished 6 games: Assassin's Creed 1, Halo 1, Spryo 1, Spyro 2, Sonic 1, and Resident Evil 2. Fuck my life. All short games too. I almost finished a bunch of long games though, like Persona 3 Reload and Morrowind. Still I guess better than when i was a kid and had all the time in the world to play games, but would only get 3 games a year and would just play them over and over.
Hii, good content as always. I was thinking about roguelikes and the multiple runs you need to see all the content so.. when do you consider them as finished?
Great tips, and great channel! Recent sub here. I've finished games before where I didn't even like the Fkng game, life is too short bro, now I want just good games in my library 😅
Dude I finished 28 games in 2024. I work full time but have lots of free time for gaming, more than most people. How in the hell did you finish over 100??
I’m playing DMC5, nier automata, stellar blade, metaphor, and infinite wealth all for the first time rn and it’s maybe the best era of gaming I’ve ever been in
84 finished games and 2 platinum trophies in 2024 sir! My backlog though is so big it will take me this lifetime and also another one to conquer. You could say it is almost unconquerable! XD❤❤ If I could give just one tip for conquering the backlog is "Stay Way from Roguelikes". ❤ Please let me know if you want to me to list every single game i finished this year!
@@TotallyTubularJonathan okay here's a top 30 though I just want to mention some games that would have been there but I am still working on them. FF7 Rebirth, Astrobot, Crash 4, Psychonauts 2, Sonic Shadow Generations X, Ori and the will of the wisps. Also I consider length as a factor for example if Doom 2016 was longer it would have been a bit higher. 1. Elden Ring 2. The Elder Scrolls 5 Skyrim 3. Doom Eternal 4. Resident Evil 4 Remake 5. Fallout 4 6. Borderlands 2 7. Resident Evil 2 Remake 8. Doom 2016 9. Quake 2 10. Resident Evil 8 11. Bioshock 12. Nier Automata 13. Deathloop 14. Returnal 15. Dishonored 16. Nioh 2 17. The Outer Worlds 18. Tiny Tinas Wonderlands 19. Starfield (God damn yes lol) 20. Bioshock 2 21. Wolfenstein New Order 22. Tinykin 23. Path of Exile 24. Cult of the Lamb 25. Grim Dawn 26. Dishonored 2 27. Star Ocean Second Story R 28. Reducted 29. Dead Rising 3 30. Turbo Overkill Just for the fun of it here's my bottom of the barrel from worst to least worse. 1. Torchlight 3 2. Wolcen 3. South Park Snow Day 4. Knight vs Giant 5. Oninaki
I have over 2500 physical games and I use to have all the new releases but the last year or so I’ve stopped myself from buying most of them because I’m like I’m not even going to play this for months if not longer so I wait for sales
I really jive with the tip that you should listen to your emotions and play what you feel like, not what your conscience tells you you should play first. Way too often I sit with a game I am really in the mood to play... but don't because I guiltily look at all the other games I could be playing instead, which results in me NOT playing the game I am in the mood to play, until the moment has passed and I no longer feel like playing it, during which time I ended up not playing anything at all. Makes sense?
Would you please wait with the subscription begging till the video is done? I mean if I get asked to sub before the video has even begun and I have seen the content I'm like "Why should I? What have you shown me? Nothing yet."
I think Jonathan is very Reasonable. It Depends on What Video Game it is. Sometimes if the difficulty is too hard. turn it down , this could be either Due to the Genre, Length, Grind, Battle System, your Patience level, Etc. if it’s too Easy.. then the game should be a Breeze at higher levels depending on your type of playstyle.

The golden rule of conquering your backlog : don't. Play whatever you feel like whenever you feel like. It's entertainment, not work
I’m super happy cause I bought Jedi:survivor from the steam Christmas sale AND…………....I ACTUALLY played and beat it, an amazing feat indeed!
Great game
CARS 2: THE VIDEO GAME
🗣️🗣️💨💨‼️‼️
heck yeah man
No matter how hard I try I think I’m just to busy of a person I can only manage to beat around 30 games every year
You need to conquer the backlog and finish Hollow Knight!!! Silksong 2025
"It's as shrimple as that."
lmao 🤣
Joy!
The backlog is the final boss you can’t beat
116? Played like 100 games in 5 years and now i have nothing to play, because played everything important for me 🤷🏼😢
Hii, good content as always. I was thinking about roguelikes and the multiple runs you need to see all the content so.. when do you consider them as finished?
depends on the roguelike, sometimes even 1 run is enough. Others not so much
Great tips, and great channel! Recent sub here. I've finished games before where I didn't even like the Fkng game, life is too short bro, now I want just good games in my library 😅
I’ve had the Witcher 1 in my library since 2010-ish.
58 minutes played 🤣
I've had Shadow of War since 2018 I believe, I played just the first mission lol
@ that’s another one I’ve had for a while, finished it recently and it was great
Takes me like 3 months just to beat one game.
Dude I finished 28 games in 2024. I work full time but have lots of free time for gaming, more than most people. How in the hell did you finish over 100??
What was your favorite month of gaming? April-June looked like a lit era, but September and November also look 🔥
I’m playing DMC5, nier automata, stellar blade, metaphor, and infinite wealth all for the first time rn and it’s maybe the best era of gaming I’ve ever been in
I have P5R, furi, Okami, and nioh2 installed on backlog- I’m hype
2:02 what’s the monster truck game? Is it only on ps?
monster jam showdown available on everything
I won't lie I commit a lot of these sins lol
84 finished games and 2 platinum trophies in 2024 sir! My backlog though is so big it will take me this lifetime and also another one to conquer. You could say it is almost unconquerable! XD❤❤ If I could give just one tip for conquering the backlog is "Stay Way from Roguelikes". ❤ Please let me know if you want to me to list every single game i finished this year!
@@Fluffychoupikkos you gotta say your favorites at least! And yes stay away from roguelikes lol

I am a trophy hunter who has to get the platinum trophy. However, your tips could be reworked to "don't get 100% the first time through."
Have to keep adding to it lmfao
Metaphor and HZFW platinum runs were more fun on easy mode.
Back log untill you play a nother RPG for 100 hours. 😂
5:44 tell me how to get omori on xbox then 😞
Would you please wait with the subscription begging till the video is done? I mean if I get asked to sub before the video has even begun and I have seen the content I'm like "Why should I? What have you shown me? Nothing yet."
116 games in year??? Are you ok bud?
Do you have a Backloggd or HowLongToBeat account to keep track of all this?
I have been just keeping my own way of tracking, lol I have been at this so long
I only beat 11 games in 2024, do you focus on only one game at a time or do you play multiple at a time.
up to 12 at once lol
Disconnect credit card from account
What's the game at 12:40?
forgive me father 2
@TotallyTubularJonathan thanks!
9:38 Never.
