Also for the younger viewers, if no one answered your call, you could hang up and get your change back.
If someone's voicemail or answering machine picked up, you had to hang up really quickly to avoid losing your change. Most of the time, people would hold the receiver to their ear with one hand, and have their other hand on the receivers cradle, to end the call as quickly as they could.

I think he was satisfied having seen they exist and chose to move on. I think it had to do with accepting the grief of his wife dying as well, but I'm not certain.

This honestly sounded like the beginning of a Scooby Doo episode at the beginning. I could imagine them predicting Renard would be the monster only for it to be the Teacher.

    ~ Prayer to Shin'nai ~
    Shin'nai-san's guardians are...
One, snake, two, monkey, three, crow, four, spider.
Five, prepare for the feast when the evening mists arrive.
Six, the badger runs along late with nare as a fix.
Seven, the corrupt yomibito rise to oppose the mountain.
Eight, death of the damned yomibito is the mandate.
Nine, one soul per day now to bind.
Ten, the mists rise away again.
