    Check out the title screen theme from the NES game Solstice. That's another Tim Follin piece, and he overdid it in a good way.

    Mega Man 2 is a fine choice for #1 - fun fact, it was one of the first soundtracks that composer ever made! Talk about starting strong. One game I'd say deserves consideration is Maniac Mansion for the NES, which comes with one of the most uniquely expressive 8-bit soundtracks out there. The kids' individual themes, Doctor Edison's theme, it's unlike another soundtrack from that era. It's amazing, and it truly delivers.
    Something I think that's really keen about this topic is noting which of the game developers consistently hit their soundtracks out of the park, and exploring why their music excelled. Sunsoft, who made Journey to Silius, also made Batman, Fester's Quest, and Blaster Master, each of which came with a phenomenal soundtrack. Capcom's sound team, which made Mega Man 2, also made many other Mega Man games, Duck Tales, Little Nemo the Dream Master, and Bionic Commando. And Konami handled Castlevania, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and much more. There were other developers, but those three were consistently putting the best sounding games on the market, many of which went on to be thought of as classic games.
    It makes you wonder. All the games I named above were great games, and fun to play, but just how much of their legacy and impact on gaming comes from their music? Do people remember them fondly because of the gameplay, or because of the tunes that have stuck with them over the years? I'd actually argue that the music has a lot to do with the perceived success of many of those games, maybe more than some realize!

    In my opinion, the single best 8-bit ost is Mother 1. Not only is it catchy and emotional, it's also huge for an ost of the era.
    Aside from that, Gimmick is an obvious omission.

    I'm not sure I agree with every pick on the list, but there's some real bangers. Mega Man 2 is a fine pick for #1. For the last several years the title screen music from MM2 has been my ringtone. Also the moon theme from Ducktales is a masterpiece.

    Have you already reacted to the 8 bit big band here on RUclips? They take Video game music and perform them big band style. The band leader Charlie Rosen even won a Grammy for his orchestration😂

    I think they missed a few big Nintendo properties: early Metroid, StarFox, Zelda, Pokemon, and Kirby could all be on the list
    So maybe they just limited themselves to 1 Nintendo IP. Super Mario Bros 2 is a good choice then.
    Aside from that, I’d have liked to see early Final Fantasy

    This may be an off-topic comment, but I would recommend listening to the soundtrack to the game FAR: Lone Sails. Even without recording it might seem interesting (Composer: Joel Schoch).

    Final Fantasy 1, 2 and 3 were 8bit games… 4, 5 and 6 were 16bit… 7, 8 and 9 then came out on the generation after that… I think it was a mix of 32 and 64bit around that time… Around that time most people stop talking about bits… I forget what the bits referred to… Maybe the CPU power or something?
    Ah well, it’s probably not important…

      It's a Computing power thing. 1 byte can be either 1 or 0. More bytes the more calculations and thoughts.
      8 bit = 2^8 bytes.
      16 bit = 2^16 bytes. So much more powerful.
      7 8 and 9 FFs were all 32 bit on the PS1

    Solid list and a good introduction to 8bit music. Castlevania III and Journey to Silius are in my top10 as well.
    Are there some great 8bit arcade board soundtracks as well (sadly, they always get ignored for the 16bit era)?

    Actually I am sorta agreed with the list, Ys games are top tier en music composition until this day.
    But I'll would add early Sega games like street or rage, Alex kid or Sonic master system games where the composition are fantastic.

    The list is not so bad, the truth is, many times these types of sites make tops to conform to the majority or they deliberately choose something that obviously should not be there to attract attention. This one seems more like the first type to me.

    Interesting list. Super eclectic though. IMO Chiptunes can refer to either 8 bit or 16 bit console music. That's why nothing newer is on that list.
    You should definitely check out the Mega Man 2 and 3 music. That series is still going today but those early games had the best music.

      Please visit OC Remix. It's a site devoted to video game music remixes. You can gauge the popularity of a game's soundtrack by the number of remixes posted for that game. I think this is a more accurate read of what's popular.
      FWIW the Mega Man games have had lots and lots of remixes and even whole competitions devoted to them. So seeing Mega Man 2 on the list you posted is very fitting but I think there are other contenders.

      I consider anything composed from sine/triangle/square/noise channels with minimal samples to be chiptunes. SNES I don't really consider chiptunes because it's mostly sample based. However, the Genesis is 16 bit and is mostly generated sound without many samples and I could consider it chiptunes. I'm not trying to be pedantic, the sound is just that distinct to me that I draw the line.

    I do agree with Megaman's presence on the list but some of the others are kinda questionable. When it comes to elaborate musical compositions it's really hard to beat those old Japanese home computers like the PC-98. But those cuts are probably a bit too deep for the average videogame music fan. Also I noticed the article saying something about the Sega Genesis not being a good console for music and that's just completely untrue. Much of what makes the aforementioned PC soundtracks so excellent carries over to the Genesis; the sound chip has a dirty grit which gives tracks a lot of character.

    Final Fantasy wouldn't appear on a top chiptune list because, you couldn't really have a pinball machine play To Zarnakand, Melodies of life or One winged angel. Different categories. The closest you'd get to pinball music from Nobuo Uematsu would probably be "The man with the machine gun". But not really.

    • @kaie333
      @kaie333 4 месяца назад

      @@DanIel-fl1vc @DanIel-fl1vc The strictest commonplace definition of chiptune would still include all 8-bit music, which includes anything composed for the NES. That means not only the first 3 Final Fantasy games, but also the soundtracks for the first Super Mario Bros and Legend of Zelda games. All of these include soundtracks that lend themselves pretty well to an orchestral arrangement.
      Is this not chiptune? And does it not already anticipate an orchestral arrangement?
      ruclips.net/video/uyMKWJ5e1kg/видео.html&ab_channel=ZeldaDungeon
      Counting 16-bit music as chiptune is also pretty common, but clearly that's where much of the ambiguity lies. If all 16-bit music is counted, then that would mean PS1 soundtracks are included, and this just doesn't feel right for a lot of people who would nevertheless count SNES music as chiptune. Given this grey area, maybe it is best to just exclude 16-bit altogether.
      So I won't argue about whether or not FF4-6 should be excluded alongside FF7 and later, however I would argue that their exclusion shouldn't have so much to do with their orchestral rearrangement potential (or pinball machine incompatibility). Almost anything that already has a memorable melody will be relatively 'easy' for a competent composer to arrange for orchestra or simplify for a more restricted medium, and there's nothing about chiptune that makes it unsuited to highly melodic pieces (quite the opposite, chiptune music specifically emphasizes melody and rhythm to compensate for its lack of harmonics and polyphony).

    • @DanIel-fl1vc
      @DanIel-fl1vc 4 месяца назад

      @@kaie333 If it's the bad sample or midi sound that defines the "chiptune" genre. Then all you'd have to do to make any genre of music chiptune is to import it into a DAW as a midi and assign bad sounding synth samples to each track.
      You could look at notes written down on paper of any song and imagine them played with bad samples. Now it's magically chiptune.
      This is a weak definition, better if it points to a recurring trope. There are plenty of game music, from pinball machines and cheap 2d platformers that got a distinct trashy sound to them. A better definition of chiptune would be, high tempo, bad samples, no sections, just an infinite loop of a few bars of beep boop.
      If it's just defined by bad samples, then it ceases to exist as a genre. Since anything can have bad samples. A good example is the tetris theme, that's a russian folk song composed in the 19th century. Why would anyone ever call it "chiptune". It'd be like calling mozart toastertune if it's being played by a toaster. If you follow the sensible definition then that would exclude most Final Fantasy music as well as the Zelda theme and quite a few old video game soundtracks.

    • @kaie333
      @kaie333 4 месяца назад

      @@DanIel-fl1vc I hear what you're saying, but if 'The Magic Flute' played on a toaster can't be aptly described as toastertune, how should we describe it instead? And what would authentic toastertune sound like?
