You stating that Death Wish 2 was better than the first film made me realize something: one cannot judge a film completely and fairly unless they come from the time when the film was released in theaters or shown on TV. Of course, this isn't possible in all instances. I say this because Death Wish was a movie of its time and unique in that no other movie before really captured the anger, fear and confusion of revenge. He had to buy a gun and then use it on another human being without getting caught. It shows a gritty 70s New York setting which was accurate, even right down to the local D'Agostino supermarket. So, what I'm saying here is, your modern lens can't fully appreciate Death Wish for what it is. You're not able to peel all the layers because you're not a product of that time. And I get it. That's not possible. However, because of it, you're introducing a "bias" I hadn't noticed before in reviewers. You're tainted by all the great horror and drama movies since. I can say Death Wish is the strongest of the bunch because of the raw psychology behind loss and fear. Thank you for making me aware of that. Of course this weakens all your reviews from the past, present, and future but that's understandable. But in the end, it's what we think that matters.
Well said! I completely agree with your statement. He just doesn't understand good cinema. I didn't grow up in this era, but I love this film the same way I love the classics. I watch them through the lens of that time and appreciate the statements these films have made. I probably own over ten thousand movies and I grew up in the 80s going to my local theater seeing everything that came out. Even if I wasn't around during that time I completely understand the film and what was happening during that era. It was gritty, savage and one of the greatest revenge films of all time.
I tend to agree that some movies definitely need their historical context to really transcend what’s on the surface. Usually Daniel tries to accept that perspective in his reviews, but I agree that putting DEATH WISH into its proper place by date is essential and he does not do that here. It was a pretty groundbreaking concept when it was originally released and that’s easily missed after all the rip offs of that concept since then.
I don't know what it says about me, but I liked the Death Wish movies. Maybe me being older and having lived in the 70s allow me to relate more with them. They did get more silly as Cannon took over, but I still found them entertaining. Invasion USA and Razorback are excellent.
The first Death Wish isn’t primarily a revenge film, it’s more like a follow up to the themes from Dirty Harry, but with a civilian. Crime was at an all time high in New York in the 70s and much like Peter Finch in Network, many people were “mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore!” People were sick of corrupt ineffective cops and wished SOMEBODY would do something about it. The reason why I think the first is the best is because it is the most realistic. It feels pretty close to what somebody in a gritty dystopian crime overrun 1970s New York would do when they take vigilante justice in their own hands (a reaction to the overall crime in the area, not just ones that affected him personally). The sequels take the idea of the innocent people in the city getting screwed over by the criminals celebrating Bronson to the extreme, and they basically turn Bronson into a powerless super hero. Which, if you try to view the later Death Wish sequels from the same semi-realistic lens as the first two… you’re bound to hate them. They are completely over the top in the best ways that Cannon could be completely over the top, and just keep getting more and more ridiculous in the same way the Rambo, Friday the 13th or Saw movies just got more and more over the top violent and ridiculous as the series went on. They were never meant to be taken seriously (this is the same studio that hired Jean Claude Van Damme as an ACTOR after only seeing him almost roundhouse kick their main producer in the face, Cannon didn’t usually care about realism, quality or substance 😅). Also If you haven’t seen the Cannon doc Electric Boogaloo yet they cover this all pretty well and it’s an AMAZINGLY entertaining doc as well chronicling the insanity that was Cannon films 😊.
Recently saw the 1930’s serial killer classic M starting Peter Lorre for the first time. Absolutely loved it. I didn’t even complain about it having subtitles. 🍿

Curse of the Undead is one of my favorite "diamonds in the rough". It's actually closer to folkloric vampire beliefs than almost all Hollywood efforts. The performances in the first half are wooden and unconvincing, but b-movie veteran Michael Pate (who makes a dark, convincing vampire) and RAWHIDE star Eric Fleming take over in the second half, bringing the movie home. The Blu-ray commentary points out some obvious low-budget shortcomings, but the quality of the script and lead performances fights through these limitations.
Been watching Seamonster movies this past week so: Creature From The Black Lagoon, Revenge Of The Creature, Attack Of The Crab Monsters, Godzilla(1954 Version), Godzilla vs The Sea Monster(1966: also known as Ilbira: Terror Of The Deep) and the She Creature(1956)
Wow. someone else who likes "Runaway Train"! I haven't seen it since the Eighties, but I liked it a lot. The director, Konchalovsky, was a good Soviet director. "Siberiade" was his top Soviet film in the Seventies.
I just watched 1984 (1984), The Medusa Touch, The Nanny (1965), Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), Don't Look Now, Magic and a British TV show Hammer House Of Horror.
The Nanny scared the hell out of me as a kid. it STILL scares me, i seen it a few years ago. Bette Davis is very scary looking. I like the earlier version of Body Snatchers better.
Robert Mitchum was an amazing actor. He is just as terrifying, if not more so, in "Night of the Hunter". "Razorback" is gorgeous to look at. Well directed, acted and written. I have some suggestions for review. "Vice Squad" with Wings Hauser and Season Hubley. and "Pyro....The Thing Without a Face" Both worth checking out.

60s Cape Fear is great. Others from that era I really dig are Experiment in Terror, Bunny Lake is Missing, and Evil Eye. Man, I haven't seen Deep Star Six in decades. I may have to revisit. My most recent new watch was kino's release of P.J, starring George Peppard - cool flick. Bronson films are that I only seen the last year I really enjoyed were 10 to Midnight, Telephone and White Buffalo
And if you like Deepstar Six and haven’t seen Leviathan (1989), I recommend that highly as well. It’s another deep sea monster movie released around the same time with a similar plot (I think that’s why people don’t like Deepstar Six as much, because there are several similar films from the same 1-2 year time period, and some of those are better known or received. But it has an all star cast, great creature effects and performances, and some great 80s action one liners that make a good entry in this late 80s deep sea horror sub-genre 😆.
There is some romance between Quill and Gamara in the Guardians movies, and a little in the Ant Man movies. But I actually didn't mind the lack of romance...I didn't even really notice. As for latest watches, I watched The Last Voyage of the Demeter last night. It was really good, and I found it almost more heartbreaking than frightening.
I watched the 3rd Deathwish film when I was 10 with my dad. Its epically bad, but kinda in a good way. I think it was filmed in Europe. The gang is like cartoonish central casting. Amazing.

Cannon films was the equivilant of the poverty row studios in the 30s and 40s. I'm un my 70s and you wouldn't believe some of the schlooky movie I sat thru as a kid at the local theaters. I saw a fair number of Italian horror movies some of which made no sense to me but at the ages between 12 and 16 a fair number of things made no sense. Sat thru some really bad movies a fair number directed by William Bodein,Roger Corman,William Castle man them were the good Olde days
Also have you seen Night of The Hunter (1955)? Cannot recommend that high enough. Especially if you like gothic films and atmosphere, the film’s cinematography is based on German expressionistic films like Nosferatu and Cabinet of Caligari. It’s often considered Robert Mitchum’s best role and he plays one of the most terrifying villains in all of cinema: a corrupt preacher serial killer/child murderer. Much of his performance in Cape Fear came from his role in that. It’s also one of the most dream like films I’ve ever seen, it’s incredibly influential, and it’s the only film ever directed acting legend Charles Laughton.

A good mix of Genres. ! The last few movies I watched were. Howl I really liked it. 2. A Company of Wolves and I re-watched The Lair of the White Worm.
Deep Star Six gives good screen time to Miguel Ferrer ---who is in quite a few awesome genre films (The Stand, The Night Flier, Robo Cop). Sean S. Cunningham directed a 80's sex comedy Spring Break that has some cool scenes of an woman new wave band. Also produced House (1986) that's worth watching The villian prison warden in Runaway Train is played by John Ryan. He's very good in the Larry Cohen baby horror film It's Alive (1974) in case this channel needs future top ten films seen this month

@thomaskummer9968 Yes. But both are slow paced. Especially with Picnic at Hanging Rock being mostly dialogue and where nothing really happens and the conclusion is left open-ended. And with World on a wire, it's a lot of dialogue. Yes, there are action scenes, but it's mostly slow paced. Most people might be turned off by that.

@@cobwebschannel I think you are missing an essential ingredient of the story and character, that none of his efforts have brought about any changes so his battle against injustice has to be building a bigger and bigger foundation with each succeeding chapter. Not to mention the idea of that sells tickets, so Cannon wasn't about to underplay it in the name of presenting it in more "artistic" ways.

I don't mind the Death Wish films, I have all 5. Yes they're gritty but that's actually how life was portrayed in the 70's & 80"s from what I remember as a child back then in England. My Mam loved Charles Bronson and so do I. I love The Mechanic with him but do actually prefer the Jason Statham version. Don't watch Death Wish remake with Bruce Willis, it sent me to sleep 🤣🤣💜🐾👍

I like Death Wish 3 for exactly the same reasons. you don't. It is completely ridiculous, its like the Zucker brothers made a Death Wish movie. Despite disagreeing on this one, love the channel and appreciate the time and effort you take in producing content.
I didn't mind the Death Wish movies when I was a teenager but they haven't aged well. They always had the most pathetic uncool unscary villains in them.
Several years ago I read the Death Wish novel. It's pretty forgettable. All I remember is the ending where he's walking past a cop and they nod at each other because all the police know who he is and what he's doing but they don't care.

Man, Sloppy Seconds production quality is really disappointing. I wouldn't mind (what a problem, right?), if not for other bootlegs I've bought from a dude in the Netherlands that look incredible. (not necessarily the video quality - the physical items) He even makes slip covers for some of them, which is wild. Considering they're mostly abandoned/forgotten 90s/2000s TV movies, it's super impressive that he sometimes adds featurettes and interviews to the discs as well. I've also bought some bootlegs of Chinese dramas on bluray and slip covers are actually the standard for Chinese bootleggers, as well as pretty well printed discs. And then you look at SlopSecs and it's the lowest effort barebones BR menus, badly printed artwork and sharpied discs. Wow, amazing.
They leaned too heavily on Bronsons badassness and burned him out. Mitchums Cady to me is better than De Niro. Mitchum and Palance can give you that glare and you know it's gonna hit the fan.

DWish 4 is my personal favorite. More of a standard 80s secret agent romp type setup. Really works for me.
5 is actually watchable too, mainly because of Michael Parks. Again, more of a generic 80s 90s thing, in a good way.

60s Cape Fear is great. Others from that era I really dig are Experiment in Terror, Bunny Lake is Missing, and Evil Eye. Man, I haven't seen Deep Star Six in decades. I may have to revisit. My most recent new watch was kino's release of P.J, starring George Peppard - cool flick. Bronson films are that I only seen the last year I really enjoyed were 10 to Midnight, Telephone and White Buffalo
The original "Cape Fear" is terrific. Mitchum is wonderful (and repulsive) in it. I like the Scorsese one too.
And if you like Deepstar Six and haven’t seen Leviathan (1989), I recommend that highly as well. It’s another deep sea monster movie released around the same time with a similar plot (I think that’s why people don’t like Deepstar Six as much, because there are several similar films from the same 1-2 year time period, and some of those are better known or received. But it has an all star cast, great creature effects and performances, and some great 80s action one liners that make a good entry in this late 80s deep sea horror sub-genre 😆.
I need to get that Razorback 4k Limited Edition from Umbrella Entertainment, and you gotta see Highlander. It's a classic!
There is some romance between Quill and Gamara in the Guardians movies, and a little in the Ant Man movies. But I actually didn't mind the lack of romance...I didn't even really notice. As for latest watches, I watched The Last Voyage of the Demeter last night. It was really good, and I found it almost more heartbreaking than frightening.
I watched the 3rd Deathwish film when I was 10 with my dad. Its epically bad, but kinda in a good way. I think it was filmed in Europe. The gang is like cartoonish central casting. Amazing.
I ❤ both versions of ,Cape Fear', but the 1962 is better. Great film! But you should watch the remake

Curse of the Undead is great just as a Western movie let alone as a vampire film. It's also based off of Folkloric vampires just like The Vordalak.
Cannon films was the equivilant of the poverty row studios in the 30s and 40s. I'm un my 70s and you wouldn't believe some of the schlooky movie I sat thru as a kid at the local theaters.
I saw a fair number of Italian horror movies some of which made no sense to me but at the ages between 12 and 16 a fair number of things made no sense. Sat thru some really bad movies a fair number directed by William Bodein,Roger Corman,William Castle man them were the good Olde days
Also have you seen Night of The Hunter (1955)? Cannot recommend that high enough. Especially if you like gothic films and atmosphere, the film’s cinematography is based on German expressionistic films like Nosferatu and Cabinet of Caligari. It’s often considered Robert Mitchum’s best role and he plays one of the most terrifying villains in all of cinema: a corrupt preacher serial killer/child murderer. Much of his performance in Cape Fear came from his role in that. It’s also one of the most dream like films I’ve ever seen, it’s incredibly influential, and it’s the only film ever directed acting legend Charles Laughton.

Deep Star Six gives good screen time to Miguel Ferrer ---who is in quite a few awesome genre films (The Stand, The Night Flier, Robo Cop). Sean S. Cunningham directed a 80's sex comedy Spring Break that has some cool scenes of an woman new wave band. Also produced House (1986) that's worth watching
The villian prison warden in Runaway Train is played by John Ryan. He's very good in the Larry Cohen baby horror film It's Alive (1974)

@thomaskummer9968 Yes. But both are slow paced. Especially with Picnic at Hanging Rock being mostly dialogue and where nothing really happens and the conclusion is left open-ended. And with World on a wire, it's a lot of dialogue. Yes, there are action scenes, but it's mostly slow paced. Most people might be turned off by that.

@@cobwebschannel I think you are missing an essential ingredient of the story and character, that none of his efforts have brought about any changes so his battle against injustice has to be building a bigger and bigger foundation with each succeeding chapter. Not to mention the idea of that sells tickets, so Cannon wasn't about to underplay it in the name of presenting it in more "artistic" ways.

I don't mind the Death Wish films, I have all 5. Yes they're gritty but that's actually how life was portrayed in the 70's & 80"s from what I remember as a child back then in England. My Mam loved Charles Bronson and so do I. I love The Mechanic with him but do actually prefer the Jason Statham version. Don't watch Death Wish remake with Bruce Willis, it sent me to sleep 🤣🤣💜🐾👍

I like Death Wish 3 for exactly the same reasons. you don't. It is completely ridiculous, its like the Zucker brothers made a Death Wish movie. Despite disagreeing on this one, love the channel and appreciate the time and effort you take in producing content.
I didn't mind the Death Wish movies when I was a teenager but they haven't aged well. They always had the most pathetic uncool unscary villains in them.
Best Wish 1 is the best.
Several years ago I read the Death Wish novel. It's pretty forgettable. All I remember is the ending where he's walking past a cop and they nod at each other because all the police know who he is and what he's doing but they don't care.

Man, Sloppy Seconds production quality is really disappointing. I wouldn't mind (what a problem, right?), if not for other bootlegs I've bought from a dude in the Netherlands that look incredible. (not necessarily the video quality - the physical items) He even makes slip covers for some of them, which is wild. Considering they're mostly abandoned/forgotten 90s/2000s TV movies, it's super impressive that he sometimes adds featurettes and interviews to the discs as well.
I've also bought some bootlegs of Chinese dramas on bluray and slip covers are actually the standard for Chinese bootleggers, as well as pretty well printed discs.
And then you look at SlopSecs and it's the lowest effort barebones BR menus, badly printed artwork and sharpied discs. Wow, amazing.
True, but it was also super cheap. And I’ll say, I also got Necronomicon from them, and it looks much better.
